A short YouTube monologue by Cameron Herold arguing that offering equity is not the primary way to attract a high-quality COO. Instead, he recommends a strong, vivid company vision, clear CEO/COO roles, a powerful brand and online presence, and framing the COO role as challenging (which appeals to A-player candidates).

So giving away equity in a company is not the way you're going to attract a COO into your brand. Remember that 20 years ago to get equity in a company you had to be a big company that was probably publicly traded. It only became popular from kind of the 97 till the the fall of the first dot com and then again in the rise of the next dot com era. But giving away equity is not how you're going to attract them. The way you're going to attract a really good second in command into your business is by having a strong vivid vision, clarity of where you're going, having a really strong brand presence and marketing and your social media platforms and your website so that you're kind of attracting them into something and then a lot of clarity on the roles and responsibilities of yourself and of theirs so they can really see themselves fitting with you in that yin and yang approach at the CEO coo, that's how you're going to attract the right people. It's also another way that you're going to attract them is by making it sound like the tough role. Because the A players want tough roles. They're not looking for something cushy. So you're almost using a reverse cell where you're making it sound challenging and the A players will rise to the top.
