A short YouTube talk by Cameron Herold arguing that the management trend of "holding people accountable" should end; instead managers should hire inherently accountable people, set clear expectations, and focus on removing obstacles, coaching, and cheering rather than babysitting or project-managing employees. The speaker frames this as a shift toward meritocracy and hiring for accountability (recorded Dec 20, 2022).

So I think the management trend that needs to die in 2023 is holding people accountable. I don't think we need to hold people accountable. I think we need to start hiring accountable people. I think we need to set very clear expectations with people that when we hire you, your job is to do these things, to deliver them on time to live the company's core values. And if you do those things, you get to keep coming to work every day. If you don't do those things, you get to leave the company and go work somewhere else. But I'm not going to babysit you. I'm not going to hold you accountable. I'm not going to oversee you. I'm not going to manage your projects for you. I'm going to hire people that live, that already set very clear expectations. So I can flip the org chart upside down and I can support you and remove obstacles and coach you and cheer you on, but I'm not going to hold you accountable and project, manage and babysit you anymore. I think it's all going to be around meritocracy and accountability and hiring the people who live that.
