Hello and welcome to Animal Expert. In this new video, we'll talk about the 10 reasons you should know about adopting a stray or shelter cat, showing you why it's so important to promote the adoption of these animals. Don't miss it. According to data from the Affinity foundation, in 2016, 33,335 domestic cats were abandoned in Spain, although the truth is that there were probably many more that are not recorded. Of these, 2.33 were euthanized and around 15,000 ended up being adopted. These figures are the same or even more alarming in other countries such as Mexico, where where almost 500,000 dogs and cats are abandoned each year. In any case, being aware of the large number of abandonments that occur in the world is essential to understanding the importance of adoption. Currently in Spain, there are only two communities where the zero sacrifice Law is in Catalonia and Madrid. However, in the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, it is completely legal to euthanize animals, especially when we are talking about sick, elderly, behaviorally challenged or difficult to adopt cats. Adopting a cat, especially in one of the communities where animals are euthanized, ensures that we are saving a life and also leaving a space for another animal to come in and be adopted. Although purebred cats are usually very desirable, the truth is that they tend to be adopted much sooner. For this reason, most cats abandoned in shelters are mixed breeds. What advantage does this represent? To begin with, most purebred cats tend to be predisposed to certain hereditary diseases, which makes mixed breed cats longer lived. In addition, mixed breed cats are unique and have physical and behavioral characteristics that are exclusive to each individual. Do you also consider yourself the owner of a unique personality? Do you have a trait that sets you apart from the rest and are you proud of it? Then mixed breed cats are for you. Although many people claim that cats are independent animals, the truth is that they are sociable beings capable of reasoning and experiencing a wide range of emotions. For this reason, a cat in a shelter is likely to feel abandoned without a reference figure to turn to and to experience high levels of stress. Adopting a feline that is in this state will provide it with the emotional well being it needs and will make the time it spends with you feel happy and loved. Although this title may be somewhat misleading, the truth is that there are many studies that show that having a cat is beneficial for human health. Having a cat improves our mood, increases our self esteem, prevents allergies in children, and reduces the risk of death from heart attacks by up to 30%. Incredible but true. Adopting a cat is a very enriching experience for a child since it teaches them the importance of adoption. It introduces them to animal care, responsibilities, empathy and responsible ownership. Let's not forget that we as adults must teach children to relate positively to animals and that our actions will be an example for them. Did you know that black cats are the least likely to be adopted? This is partly because black cats are associated with bad luck. This popular belief is the result of ignorance. Since black cats do not bring bad luck, it is a myth. Therefore, when it comes to adopting, we can focus on one of the most vulnerable groups of cats for adoption, black cats. Cats are especially clean animals, adapt to practically any home, know how to ration their food, and do not need to be walked, although some owners do walk their cats. Undoubtedly, these characteristics mean that many people choose to have a cat over a dog. However, it should be noted that they also need veterinary care, socialization and cannot be left alone for more than a day. As some people believe there are some advantages to adopting a kitten that are important to know. For example, we can ensure that their socialization is adequate. They are sweet and will be with you for longer. However, it is also important to point out some advantages of choosing an adult cat, such as the fact that they have a defined personality and already know how to use the litter box and the scratching post, which will ensure a better adaptation to the home and the choice of a cat that suits our lifestyle. We would also like to remind you that adult, elderly or physically challenged cats are the ones that are least likely to be adopted. Why not give them a second chance too? Cats are animals with unique characters as each individual is completely unique and different from the others. They can be sleepy, active, playful, affectionate or somewhat shy. But any of these personalities can be perfect if they fit with our own identity, don't you think? But how can we recognize the personality of a shelter or stray cat? In any case, relating to them is going to be essential. But let's not forget that first impressions can be somewhat distorted in most cases due to the distrust they may have towards people based on their own experiences. For this reason, we recommend that you consult with a volunteer or person in charge of the center. Try to interact with the cat several times before taking it home, and try to make the first impression as positive as possible, perhaps with the help of a treat. Cats are so great that you can even fall in love with a pair of siblings or cats that have previously lived together and have been abandoned. If there is anything better than adopting a cat, it is undoubtedly adopting two friendly cats. This way the adaptation process will be much more positive. What reason to adopt would you add to this list? Leave us your comments and tell us about your experience if you have adopted so that others may be encouraged to do so too.
