3 CLAVES para saber si TU GATO ESTÁ SANO 😸 | Alimentación, arenero y actividad física de gatos sanos

Veterinarian Carlos explains three ways to tell if your cat is healthy: monitor what it eats and drinks, check its litter box habits, and watch its activity level. He shows cat owners how to spot signs of illness and when to call a vet.
Here on this channel. What are we here for? Let's see. So that you know how to take care of your cat. Well, today we're going to check if your cat is healthy. Hello, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. When something happens to a cat, it's going to take a long time to realize it. And I know I say this a lot, but with cats, the most important thing is to anticipate. That's why today we're going to see if your cat's health is really good. There are three very simple things that you have to look for. Take notes throughout the video and at the end. Leave me a comment and tell me if your cat follows them. Number one, food and drink guidelines. To know if our cat is healthy, the first thing we have to look at is how it eats and drinks how it eats. A healthy cat has to eat what it's supposed to eat. And how much is that. If your cat eats dry food, kibble, balanced food, or commercial food in general, you will be able to find this information on the product label, which tells you how many grams per day your cat should consume based on its weight. And if you choose to give your cat homemade food, it should eat the amount that its nutritionist or dietitian has told you to eat. If your cat is eating all that it is supposed to, it is indicating that everything is probably fine. So if your cat eats less than what it is supposed to, does that mean that it is sick? Well, you have to be a little careful when cats eat less than what they are supposed to, especially if they eat much less than they should, because cats have a somewhat special metabolism, and when they eat very little energy, they start to use the fat they have in their bodies in a very significant way. This does not sit well with the liver of our feline companions. And some animals end up developing a disease called hepatic lipidosis. That is why it is especially important that we pay attention. Cats should not go without food for more than 24 hours at a time. Cats with a health problem, such as a high fever or a serious pain, usually stop eating or eat less than their fair share. That's why it's so important to pay attention to whether they leave a lot of food in their bowl, especially if there are changes. If you notice that over time the cat is eating less than their fair share. However, there are some cats that have chronic illnesses, for example, problems with their mouths, problems with their gums. This makes their mouths hurt. When they chew and that's why they decide to eat less dry food, because it's really hard for them and this is a warning sign. On the other hand, if my cat eats much more than their fair share, that would be a good indication, right? If your cat eats more than their fair share, it could be that they don't have a good feeding pattern and this will make them gain weight, which is what I always say. But wait, because there are some diseases that cause them to eat compulsively and yet the cat loses weight. This is the case of diabetes. A clinical sign occurs called polyphagia, which is that cats with diabetes eat more than they need and yet the cat is very thin and you say, oh, my cat eats a lot but doesn't gain any weight. In this case, I recommend that you go to the vet because it is an indication that something is wrong. And since we are talking about physical condition, I want to emphasize the importance of your cat not losing weight. Healthy cats usually maintain their ideal weight. If your cat is losing weight, it could be due to some disease. That is why it is important that you know how to identify if your cat is thinner than usual. The most important thing is to know how to look and feel. Here we have Tatu, who will serve as our model. Where do you have to touch on the ribs? You have to feel them a little. If they are very prominent, it means that your cat is very thin. This part of the hip here also tends to be very prominent in cats that are underweight. To see this, you should look at the belly area, which should be neither too droopy nor too tucked up. And above all, look at it from above. If you see that this area here is very prominent, it may be that your cat is thinner than it should be. All of this could indicate that something is wrong with your cat's health. Now let's move on to water. A healthy cat weighing around 4kg should drink approximately one glass of water a day, which is around 250 milliliters. This does not mean that you should limit the amount of water they are given, because sometimes it is hotter outside, or if they have eaten less wet food, they may drink a little more. These are all habits of healthy cats. And I'm saying that he could drink a little more. But if you see that your cat drinks a lot more water and it's like an impulse that he can't control, he goes to the water bowl a lot or even finishes it several times a day and you have to refill it, it could be an Indication that he's sick. Some illnesses, such as hormone problems, hyperthyroidism, or also problems like diabetes or kidney disease cause our cats to drink more water, much more. But you may be wondering, hey, what if my cat doesn't drink a whole glass a day? Is he okay? Well, there are actually very few illnesses that caus cat to drink less unless he's feeling very ill and doesn't want to eat or drink anything. Problems such as stomach pain, diarrhea, or cats that have a fever, a very high temperature, that are lying down and can't get up to drink. But in this case, they don't eat, they drink. What I mean here is that if you notice that your cat usually drinks but doesn't finish all the water, there probably isn't a problem in this case because it's very difficult to know where our cats are drinking from our feline companions like running water. And there are some that get used to drinking from the saucer of flower pots or from the toilet or shower tray. And in those cases, they are drinking an amount of water that you don't realize. Not to mention that wet food or homemade food, which has a much higher amount of water, is one of the main sources of hydration for cats. If your cat eats a lot of canned food or you cook for them at home, it's likely that they drink less than I've told you. And in these cases, it's absolutely fine. Have you checked that your cat eats and drinks what they should? Well, now we have a check. This means that this part of your cat's diet is fine. If you notice any of the other things, you should start to have alarms and talk to your vet. Number two, bathroom routine. Well, of course, by bathroom routine, I mean going to their litter box, the litter tray, which is so hard for me to say. A cat should go to the litter box at least a couple of times a day or three at most. Also, some studies have linked the amount of time they spend in the litter box. And healthy cats use the litter box for much longer than cats that have some kind of problem. According to the study that I'll leave you with in the description box below, A healthy cat uses the litter box for an average of 23 seconds each time they go. And a cat that has some kind of problem, for example, when it comes to peeing, uses it for only nine seconds. And don't get all worked up. And I don't want you to get obsessed and chase your cat around with a stopwatch. This is just an average from a study that they did. And I thought it would be interesting to mention it in the video on the subject of the litter box, especially since you'll notice it by the number of times your cat goes to the bathroom. If you notice that your cat goes to the litter box a lot and goes in and out very quickly, and you see, for example, when you pick up the litter box, that there are different puddles of pee more than three, that means that perhaps they are using the litter box more than they should. There are some diseases that cause cats to urinate less and also in places in our home that are not their litter box. For example, a disease called flood or feline idiopathic cystitis are diseases that cause our cats to always have the urge to pee and to do it anywhere. But there are some diseases that cause our feline companions to urinate much more than they should. It can be like opening the floodgates of a reservoir, causing them to pee a lot. In these cases, the litter will last much less than it used to because you will have to remove a large amount of wet litter every day. If you notice that the litter is lasting less and less, that is when you might start to worry. The most common diseases that cause our cat to pee a lot are those that require them to drink more water. Cats that have diabetes will also urinate more. Cats that have hyperthyroidism and that drink more water will also pee more. But there are others that have nothing to do with hormones, such as kidney diseases. Cats that have chronic kidney disease will drink a lot of water and will also pee a lot. But in the litter box, not only does our cat do number one, but also number two, poop. This is much less of a mystery. A cat's poop has to be consistent. It should be hard. Of course, if you notice that your cat has diarrhea, that is an indication that something is wrong and therefore it could be sick. So your cat goes to the litter box two or three times a day to pee, and its poop is more or less hard. Well, here we could put another check to say that your cat, at least in this part, is fine. If you notice any of the other things I've mentioned, you should take them to the vet because it's an indication that something is wrong with their health. Point number three, activity and physical condition. When something happens to many cats, the first thing they do is hide. They let their human families see them much less than before. In these cases, it's especially important to notice if something has changed. If our cat used to be A bit shy and didn't show themselves much, and we see that they're still doing that, well, that's okay. But if our cat was a very lively cat and had a lot of interaction with this and suddenly they've stopped, this could indicate that something is wrong with them. But in addition to hiding, cats that have something wrong with them also stop wanting to move around very much. If everything goes well in the game that you usually play with your cat and they still want to play jump run after the ball, that's an indication that your cat is probably healthy. But if he is a little listless and doesn't want to move much and you try to play with him for several days in a row and you see that he doesn't pay much attention to the toys, this is an indication that something is wrong with him. Cats can reduce their physical activity due to pain, fever, or even stress. And we must pay full attention to it because it is usually accompanied by some of the things I have mentioned during the video and you may not have even noticed. Generally, a change in their activity routines is usually the first sign we see. On the other hand, grooming can also be included within activity. It is true that our cats spend a lot of time during the day grooming themselves between 30 and 50% of their waking hours. But we only see a small part of it, and you might say, wow, this is outrageous. 12 hours. How am I supposed to know that my cat is licking itself much more than it should? Usually because you see it licking a single area very frequently. This can be an indication of pain. But there are some cats that are stressed and groom themselves compulsively. These cats end up losing some of the hair that covers that area. And if they groom themselves less than 30%, how are we supposed to know? Usually because we see that our cat's hair is dirty, that it is matted, that it does not have the shine that it used to have before. This can happen to cats that have pain in some part of their body. If they already have arthritis and joint problems, it is normal for them to have a little more difficulty moving, and that is why they do not want to groom themselves. It also happens to cats that have a fever or that are unwell due to an illness, such as advanced stages of leukemia or immunodeficiency. To find out if your cat is grooming itself correctly and how much a healthy cat should groom itself, I'll leave the video here in the box. If you haven't noticed any changes in your cat's behavior, it still wants to play with you and grooms itself as usual. We'll put a check mark indicating that our cat is healthy, especially if we've already checked everything before to make sure everything was fine. So congratulations. Everything seems to indicate that your cat is fine. And if there's anything that's made you think or reflect and you've noticed that it's not as it should be, take it to the vet, because they'll be able to examine it there and they'll surely clear up any doubts. And now tell me how many green check marks you've made in this video and leave me a comment if you've learned anything that you found interesting. And by the way, if this is the first video you've watched about pets and happy families, subscribe to the channel and give the video a like, even if it's not the first. We'd also appreciate that. Remember that we also have a secondary channel here on YouTube called Questions and Answers from a Veterinarian. If you click the bell on both, you'll find out when we upload videos. And before we leave, we meet Bichin and Mumi, who live with their humans, Bellion and Banya. And here we have Mew, who was this little when they sent us the photo. He's probably quite a kitty by now. He greets us from Mexico with his man, Gabby Esperanza and I always like to say goodbye with these images of peace. They're Nyx, Yuna and Carolina Greetis from Quito, Ecuador. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel. And I'll see you in the next video. Effective first of all, what do you want me to say? Uh, I don't know. I don't know what the video is about. I don't remember. Clash to find out if your cat is healthy. 2. The truth about happy pets and families is that Carlos expects me to tell him what to say. That's a lie. Like a house. Look at the script. Well, that script of what you have written there to what you say at the end of the video. Because I'm worth it. Expectation, reality, Nothing to do with it. Shut up. But look, you have to balance between not shouting and vocalizing. I didn't tell you to say that phrase, okay? And don't talk as if you're from Valladolid. You're from Extremadora. I talk however I want. On the other hand, talking like you're from the Palace. Well, you're changing the script for me. Let's adapt. Yes, but they say here in the studio that most of those people don't have the exact perception because you're not chasing the cat all day, so you don't realize it and don't pee. Pee. This is because they urinate a lot. It's like a swamp. When people are listening to you, they think by default that everything you're saying happens to their cat. Therefore, you have to rule that out. The note says to see what it means. In this case, what I was saying, see a little bit of everything that really happens. Yes. Don't laugh. Of course, logically. Thank you. Thank you. It's all recorded. It's all recorded. Yes, you're right. But listen to me, or you don't want me to say it. Buy another microphone. Buy another tripod. Buy another camera. We need new materials. In pets and happy families.
