Hi, I'm Adrian Conde, a veterinarian and in this video we're going to talk about supplements for dogs. It's obvious that we're increasingly interested in their diet and there's an increasingly wide range of supplements available on the market. Is it necessary to add food supplements? If so, which ones? We're going to talk about that in this video. There are some supplements and complements that can be interesting to add to their diet to improve their health. One of them is probiotics, which we can easily find in any supermarket. Examples of probiotics that our dogs or cats can consume are kefir, yogurt and sauerkraut. Probiotics are bacteria that are beneficial for the intestinal microbiota and this will help them have much better digestion, make better use of nutrients and be able to combat pathogenic bacteria and microorganisms in their bodies. If we are going to choose, for example, to give them kefir, it will be a small amount of one teaspoon for every five kilograms of weight. And it is important to choose a product that does not have added sugars, sweeteners or flavors. Another interesting supplement that we can incorporate into their diet is Omega 3, especially if possible of animal or marine origin. Why? Due to the condition of our dogs and cats. Remember that cats are strict carnivores and dogs are facultative or opportunistic carnivores. They have a much worse conversion of Omega 3 from plant sources, so we must offer them animal sources. A good option is marine sources of fish, preferably small oily fish such as sardines or anchovies. But if not salmon, this will specifically provide us with EPA and DHA and has an anti inflammatory function for the body. Our animals eat meat, but meat is rich in omega 6 which is pro inflammatory and although some inflammation in their body is beneficial for protecting them, it can sometimes get out of control. By introducing Omega 3 into their diet, we will balance the fatty acid balance much better. There are some algae such as spirulina that may be interesting to include in their diet and will help strengthen their immune system, among other functions. We can alternate them from time to time throughout the week. Coconut oil can be another interesting option to include as a supplement in their diet. It will greatly help cognitive function and this will be very interesting especially in senior dogs. And the amount we are going to give them is going to be half a teaspoon for every 5kg of weight. It is important that if we are going to include any type of supplement or complement. We always do so after asking a professional first who can tell us if that supplement will be good for our dog or cat in particular and above all, very importantly, if there is any pathology. We are never give anything without consulting a veterinarian. As you can see, it's not really mandatory to include supplements in your dog's diet, but there are some that can provide benefits. Why not use them? So if you have any questions and need help, much more information and I can also help you with your dog's diet. And that's it for the video on some type of supplement or addition to your dog's diet. Bye.
