Training a dog based on positive behavior is not always easy, especially when unwanted behaviors appear. That's when some owners decide to punish and scold their dogs without knowing that the techniques they use are counterproductive or inappropriate. In this new video from Animal Expert, we'll show you five very common mistakes when scolding a dog that you should completely avoid. Take Note Scolding youg Dog out of Turn youn've probably heard this many times before, but the truth is that scolding a dog long after it has committed a misdeed makes no sense. Dogs are not able to associate something that happened hours ago with a current punishment, which causes uncertainty and mistrust. If you scold a dog out of turn, you'll notice that it lowers its ears, hides its tail, licks its lips or hides. That doesn't mean that it understands you or that it really knows why you're scolding it. Dogs show signs of appeasement due to your anger with the intention of getting you to stop overdoing it. Overdoing it when you fight is always bad. Whatever the reason, you should avoid yelling at your dog, using violence, pushing and even harmful tools like electric collars. Prolonging an already unpleasant situation causes stress and anxiety and in the most serious cases can cause fear or trigger aggressive behavior such as bringing your dog near their urine or feces. Some dogs, even those who have learned to urinate outside, may have an accident from time to time. This is completely normal and although it is very unpleasant behavior, under no circumstances should you bring your dog near their feces. Do you know why? By doing this, your dog associates urine and feces with your anger, so they may end up eating them to avoid being scolded. This causes serious stress related problems, triggers coprophagia, and can even cause health problems. Don't Let Them Growl Dogs communicate their discomfort through growling either towards other dogs or towards people in different contexts. A growl can mean don't come any closer or stop and stop doing that. I don't like it. By scolding him, we are telling him that he shouldn't growl and that can cause him to bite directly instead of warning us. Being inconsistent if there's one thing that could be worse than all of the above, it's being inconsistent with your dog's education and permissiveness. You can't scold him for putting him on the couch if two days later you're going to encourage him to go up and cuddle him for a while. Dogs need stability and fix guidelines. That's why the whole family should always follow the same ones. Do you use any of these techniques that are not recommended? What other mistakes do you know of?
