The content features Carlos, a veterinarian, who discusses common mistakes that can disappoint and frustrate cats, explaining cat behavior, environmental needs, litter box care, and how to maintain a healthy relationship with feline companions. The video is educational and aimed at cat owners to improve their pets' well-being.
Foreign Hi, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. The things you do at home can disappoint your feline companion, and it goes without saying that this can affect them well, both them and us. The thing is, when a cat is disappointed or frustrated, they can start to develop a series of behaviors that are negative for the family, such as becoming more aggressive. This frustration can also manifest in the cat through health problems, urinary problems, eating less, or even a compromised immune system, which can be a little weaker. In fact, scientific studies have shown that this frustration and disappointment that our cats can experience, which I'll leave in the description box, greatly affect cats that live in shelters. Cats in shelters that experience greater frustration can develop respiratory problems, such as feline colds, much more frequently. Furthermore, when we disappoint our feline companions, we can also influence their behavior. They may become more evasive, want less contact with us, and spend less time in the same place where we are. In other words, they become less familiar to cats because they don't see us as integrated into their social group. That's why in this video, I'm going to tell you how to prevent your cat from feeling disappointed in you and avoid all these problems. The most visible way we can see that our cat is frustrated is through their face and gestures. For example, it's common for them to wrinkle their upper lip or raise it a little higher. Their ears, instead of being up, like when they're happy and excited, may flatten out a little to the sides or lean back a little. They may also stretch their whiskers, flattening them, making the corners of their lips a little flatter. And that's why their whiskers extend to the sides. It is also common for cats to look upwards as a sign of frustration. And of course, they can also growl, snort, and vocalize or meow. Well, what things can make your cat feel disappointed or frustrated? The most important one is lack of space. You have probably heard me tell you, well, I don't know, 255,000 times that it is essential for your home to be cat friendly. And what that means is that the space has to be adequate for our feline companions. You must ensure that your cat has a variety of options so that it can develop all aspects of its life inside your home. Places to hide, places to stalk, to look outside to mark with its claws, and also that these places are properly distributed. For example, the litter box has to be separate from the food and water bowls you also have to give them different resting areas, some a little more private, others more visible, so that your cat always has the possibility to choose. The lack of any of these spaces is a very common source of frustration for cats. But the whole issue of how much space a cat needs, how many square meters, can also be a bit controversial. Let's go. And this is very important because it also helps us know if our house has enough space for two cats to live together, or perhaps three cats. Regarding this aspect, the truth is that there's no uniformity of ideas. And if you are interested in more, we can delve into a specific video. It is estimated that when cats are free, they cover approximately 6 square kilometers as a habitat, as an area where they develop their lives. And well, you don't need to have a 6 square kilometers house because that would be a mansion. But in your house, the most important thing is that these spaces are well distributed and that they have all the resources that a cat needs in order to develop their lives. And especially if more than one cat is going to live together, it is extremely important that they get along as well as possible. To achieve this, it is essential that they have been properly introduced and that the cats living inside the house do not see each other as competitors for resources, as one is going to take the other's food or resting areas. It is important that if more than one cat lives in the house, for example, two, they at least have two different environments, two rooms, so that if one bothers the other a lot, at least they do not have to see each other. And how many rooms do we need for more than two cats? Well, it is not that this is multiplied by the number of cats, but more or less. You have to make sure that the cats have different environments and spaces to prevent them from being in contact all the time, especially if there is a conflict or fight between them. Obviously, we have to think about all this with a bit of common sense. If your house is 40 square meters, you won't be able to live with seven cats because there won't be enough physical space. Even if they get along very well. In other words, you. You won't have much space to move around. In other words, it's important to keep this in mind before deciding to share your life with more than one feline companion. Another very common reason why we can disappoint our cats is our own mistake. Not having a suitable litter box or not keeping it in optimal conditions for our feline companion. As for whether the litter box is suitable or not, you have to consider that there are many models on the market, whether it's covered or uncovered. And well, it's possible that you don't understand or know very well what your feline companion's priorities are. That's why I'm going to give you a recommendation. If you don't know your cat very well and don't know what it prefers, I recommend that you buy a covered litter box. Because lidded litter boxes can always be uncovered. If you remove the lid, it's still functional. That way it can be much more versatile, depending on your cat's preferences. More things going back to. For example, if you live with more than one cat, then you may not have enough litter boxes in your home. Our cats will only want to share their litter box with other cats that they get along with. So if our cats don't get along very well, we will always have to make sure that there is at least one litter box per cat and ideally one more than the number of cats living in the house. And of course, the biggest thing that can frustrate our cats with their litter is if you don't keep it properly cleaned. There are some people who put the litter in and say, well, it's going to get dirty. I just remove the part that's a little dirty and I keep replacing it and replacing it and replacing it. And they never remember to change the entire litter box. Little by little with use, the litter box takes on the odors of the things our cat does in it. So it is highly recommended that we do a complete litter change at least every three or four weeks. Well, depending on the type of litter you are using. As a recommendation, you should clean the tray, the plastic of the tray, with neutral soap or with an enzymatic cleaner at least every time you change all the litter so that the odors do not impregnate the plastic. And while we are talking about it, I have to take this opportunity to tell you that it is better not to use scented litter because it is possible that not only the perfumes can be harmful due to the chemical issue, but also that the perfume you are using does not like your cat. In addition, I am going to recommend that you never place the litter box in a very crowded place or where there is a lot of people walking around. For example, it is a huge mistake to put it in a hallway because cats like to have a certain amount of privacy when they are using it. Why is this? Well, because it's a bit of a delicate moment. The cat's defenses are a bit low because it's focused on doing its business. Cats don't like to be petted or to be on top of them while they're using the litter box. All of these things that I just mentioned can eventually make them not want to use their litter box and start doing their business, both number one and number two, outside of it. And above all regarding urine, we already know that our cats are a bit more delicate. And if they don't use their litter box because they don't want to, they may start to retain it. And in the long run, this ends up causing problems with urinary obstructions, the formation of stones or small stones in the bladder, and, well, all that stuff called flut feline lower urinary tract syndrome, which we've already made a video about specifically on the channel. And I'll leave a link to it in the box. And one of the things that will definitely disappoint your cat a lot is if you don't give it the attention it needs. I'm not talking about running after it every time it opens its mouth like, oh, little furry friend, what do you want? What do you need? We're looking for a healthy relationship between human and cat here. You need to spend quality time with your feline companion. Put your phone away, forget about your problems and your daily chores and the shopping list, and focus exclusively on your cat. What you need to do is dedicate some time during the day to just being with it. To being with it the way a cat wants you to be with it. For example, playing games, having it chase you around the house, giving it toys that are appropriate for it, having a moment of connection with your feline companion. It doesn't have to be much. Just 30 minutes a day or so can get your cat moving around a bit more. Be a bit more active and strengthen your bond. Don't want to disappoint your cat. Well, forget about sudden changes at home. Get it into your head. Your feline companion needs to adapt to any changes that are going to happen in your home. Cats like stability to have everything under control. And any little change, even the slightest, can really destabilize them. So if you're one of those people who moves the furniture around every week, you should know that your cat is very disappointed with your behavior. However, anything that reinforces routines helps our cats a lot. For example, they love to eat at the same time every day. And you'll notice if you feed your cat in batches that when it's almost time for their lunch, they're already there, waiting for you to go to their plate. Well, cats are like that, which is why I always recommend that you get your cat used to things happening at the same times at home, so that there are no unexpected surprises and you always know what to expect. On the other hand, I also recommend that you don't make too many changes to the type of food or flavors, because it's very common for you, for example, to come home with some cans that cost you super expensive and want to put them in front of them because you say they have the best composition, and yet your cat smells them and says, you eat this. Give me the can you were giving me yesterday. If something works for you and is positive for your cat, don't change it. If you want to change your feline companion's diet, well, I don't know. Because you've seen a food that has a better composition. Well, you always have to do it gradually, progressively, as I explain in a video that I'll leave linked here in the box. That also prevents your cat from getting diarrhea with the change of food. This routine thing can also be applied to other changes that may occur in our home, for example, some that can't be as gradual as grandpa has to come live with us. Well, for these cases in which we can't do everything as little by little as we would like, it is best to rely on synthetic feline facial pheromones, which are substances that I have already told you about on countless occasions that help your cat perceive changes in a less aggressive way. In addition, the person who comes to live in your house, for example, also has to know that you can't interact with the cat in a very intrusive way from the very beginning. You have to let the cat always be the one to make the first move. We have to get that out of our heads about going anywhere and petting the cat before anything else. And if someone comes to your house, for example, even if it's just visiting, you have to tell them that too. Hey, let the cat come closer if it wants to. If it trusts you at that moment, you can pet it. But don't run and try to touch its head, because that could upset the cat. And if you don't know how to approach a cat, you don't know. I've also told you some tricks in a video that I've linked here, precisely a little bit related to all this. Something that really disappoints our cats is when we don't respect their personal space, when we want to hug them and kiss them Constantly. And here I have to tell you that I say I blame you. I raise my hand and say that I'm the first one who to. Sometimes I don't know how to respect it too much. Well, that little bubble that our cats have, and in this case around the cat, because I see him so sleepy, perhaps lying on the couch, that it's irresistible for me to go over and touch him or pet him a little. It's true that we are extremely lucky that the cat is a very affectionate cat and that he usually accepts all these things very well. As a general rule, and especially if you don't live with a cat that is very sociable, I recommend that the contact with your cat, that the little time you spend petting him is generally short. In fact, it has been shown that most cats tend to value this type of way of relating to them much more. We pet them like this for a little while and then let them continue living their life and doing their thing. And well, of course, your cat is going to be very disappointed in you if you spend all day punishing and scolding him. Cats are very sensitive animals, and, well, they have a relationship with us that is very important. It can be more or less severe. What definitely weakens it is when we spend all day after them, yelling at them or scolding them for things they might do in our house. After all, our feline companions live in the same environment as we do. And it's true that they don't relate to their surroundings in the same way that we do. For example, they like to be higher up and look at the world from a certain distance. So it's common for a cat, for example, to like to climb up on a sofa or on a piece of furniture. You don't have to scold your cat for that. It's simply the nature of your feline companion. If you see that they want to climb up on a piece of furniture, it's not safe for them because, for example, there's a lamp or a plant that's not suitable for a cat to live with, or they're going to knock over your little girl's communion photo. What you can do is redirect that behavior to other places that are suitable. For example, by putting a scratching post that's a little high up where you can see it, your cat may climb up instead of the furniture. And this is related to catification, which we don't understand. That's why I told you at the very beginning of the video, because it's the most important Thing. On the other hand, it could be that your cat is developing some type of behavior that is not very consistent with the theme of living with you. Instead of spending all day scolding and chasing it, which can weaken your relationship, what you have to do is get your cat to change that way of acting. To do this, the most important thing is to understand why our cat, for example, is scratching the sofa, if that's what bothers us, and try to give it alternatives or redirect that behavior to a place that is suitable for it. Cats need to mark with their claws. I've told you this many times. If we don't give them some options or alternatives that are suitable for your cat to mark, it's normal for them to end up doing it anywhere. But this type of behavior, if your cat has a scratching post nearby that they've become accustomed to using, it is very common for them to only do this in that area. The same happens with urine marking, which drives many people crazy. Well, maybe your cat is marking because he is not neutered and he notices that the females are in heat and that is why he feels the need to mark, or because there is another male nearby with whom he does not get along and also notices it and that is why he marks that area. Anyway, scolding is never the solution. Luckily I know that Alcatofo is not disappointed in me at all, but he always will be. And you, do you feel that you have ever disappointed your cat? Or have you never done any of this? Well, leave me a comment and tell me a little about your coexistence. And if you also liked the video, well, you know, like, give it a like and subscribe to the channel if you haven't already. Also, if you want to support us a lot, a lot, give us a super thanks and we will be very grateful. We also have a secondary channel called Questions and Answers from a veterinarian here on YouTube. And before we go, we have to meet this one. A beautiful white cat named Zaza greets us with her human companion, Odalis from Belgium. And this beauty is called Dhekessa and greets us with her human companion, Brenda from Quaritaro and from Santiago, Chile, we have Pandora and Cervero greeting us who live with their human companion, Cecilia Paredes. Thank you very much for following the channel Happy Pets and Families. And we'll see you in the next video. Kociofo, stay here or I'll eat your ear. Today they asked me about the CACFO like among other questions. I mean, let's not. Go back to the subject of the name, please. To give a parrot there, resting its paws on it. And it is common for our mistakes to disappoint them. Right? That sounds very nice, doesn't it? All these things that I just told you that your cat doesn't like at all and that disappoint them and that they. Okay, okay, okay. All these things that I just told you that your cat doesn't like at all. I can tell you now, right? I for. That's it. Feline companion. Even though you don't like it very much, I've never abandoned it. No, it's not that I don't like it. It's just that when you say feline companion 77 times in a video, that's my trademark. Well, that's it. That's it. Come on. That's it. That's why we see how we started this sentence. Especially if you live with a cat that is not. I don't remember how I said. Seems like clapping. Here, here. But how far can you see me? You can see me up to here and you can see my little knee. Well, as you can see, it's fine. I don't know if it makes him talk or not. He's speechless. He's speechless. Cat, I'm going to have to put a high bed here so people can see you, because this thing of holding you like this, as if you were. Yes, clap on him. He's a Flemish cat. Now, please say goodbye to the cat, please. For those of you who go around saying that the cat is a blanket cat and that lets you do everything.
