6 PASOS para EVITAR que el ARENERO de tu GATO HUELA MAL | ¿Tu casa huele a pipí o caca de gato?

Veterinarian Ant Miller explains why cat litter boxes smell and shares six steps to eliminate odors. The advice covers litter types, cleaning routines, and what bad smells reveal about your cat's health.
We've already talked about litter boxes, types of litter, and how to clean your cat's litter box on the channel. But today I'm going to tell you why your cat's litter box smells bad and how to prevent it. Hi, I'm Ant Miller and I'm a veterinarian. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. Allison's strength was fading with each passing minute until another car arrived on the scene. A young Veterinary student named T.N. ear, who was on vacation with his friends in Port Elizabeth, got out of the car and ran to Allison to help her. If there's one thing that many people see as a disadvantage of living with a cat, it's precisely the smell of cat pee. I don't know why some people think that if you live with a cat, your house will always smell like pee. Well, that's not always true. Most houses with cats smell great. But it's true that sometimes the smell near the litter box might not exactly be of pine and roses. And today I'm going to tell you why and how to avoid it, also based on my own experience, because it happened to me with my light. But why does cat urine smell bad? It's precisely because of the bacteria that the urine contains. Little by little, they break down the urea, which is a component of urine, and give it that characteristic ammonia like smell. In the case of poop, it's a little different. The reason it smells bad is because of a specific amino acid found in meat called tryptophan. The bacteria in our intestines break down tryptophan and convert it into a substance called scatole, which doesn't smell very good. To to be honest, this is the reason why the poop of animals that eat meat smells much worse than that of animals that don't. That's why your cat's poop smells worse than that of a cow. Obviously, after your feline companion has gone through their litter box, it's normal for it to smell a little. But if your cat's litter box smells really bad, here's a step by step guide on what you need to do to prevent that stink bomb from forming in your home. First and foremost, never, ever use scented litter to prevent the smell from coming from the litter box. This scented litter will only camouflage the problem, and in the end, you're adding a bunch of chemicals to something that your cat comes into contact with every day. Plus, it's common for cats that don't like the scent that we've put on their litter boxes to stop using the litter box and start doing their business all over your house. So it could be the biggest mistake of your life. Don't do it well your life well with the litter box. Step number one, clean the litter box every day. You need to remove any wet litter and all of the litter. You'll prevent it from staying there for too long and these bacteria that produce the bad smell from starting to act and leaving everything in your house. Step number two, check that the litter you put in the tray absorbs well. People often resort to the cheapest litter and that litter may not have enough absorbent capacity. You have to check each litter to see if a lot of urine accumulates in the plastic of the tray. If this happens, the substrate is not absorbing as much as it should and this may be the cause of the bad smell. I also usually recommend some litters that camouflage bad odors very well. These are vegetable litters, which are the ones we use with Milu or biodegradable litters. Pine pellets also work very well. If you want to know what type of litter you should put in your cat's litter box so that everything goes smoothly and you can also save some money, I've left a video below where I explained all the alternatives. In fact, Milu's litter used to smell a lot. We used an absorbent litter. I don't remember if it was normal, absorbent or clumping, but it didn't work. That's why we decided to make the switch to an ecological biodegradable litter box made of wood. It worked wonders. It reduced the smell of the litter box a lot, which is why I usually recommend it in cases where cat litter boxes smell a lot in homes. Third, clean the litter box well. It's one thing to clean the litter box every day and another to do a deep cleaning of the litter box. You have to clean your cat's litter box at least once every three weeks. Every time you remove all the substrate that you have put in your cat's litter box, you should take the opportunity to give it a good wipe with neutral soap and hot water. And then I recommend that you put it in the sun. The sun kills a lot of bacteria and combined with soap can be the perfect solution to the smell of the litter box. If you want to help a little more, you can use enzymatic cleaners. Although I can tell you that with soap, hot water and the sun, it usually works quite well because that's what we do with milu. I recommend that you watch this video on my channel where I tell you how to maintain the litter box so that it's always perfect for your cat. Fourth, you may need to change your cat's litter box, especially if it has deteriorated over time. Often when our feline friends go to bury their things, they don't have enough litter and end up leaving marks on the walls of the tray with their little claws. Since these trays are made of plastic, they also encourage bacteria and dirt to accumulate in these marks, which can be the cause of the bad smell. If you put a covered litter box in it. When you change the tray, if your cat likes it, you'll also greatly reduce the smell because all of that will be contained inside the lid. In addition, you should place your cat's litter box in a well ventilated location, never in a high traffic area, because cats don't like to do their business where a lot of people walk by. However, make sure that the area a little away from your house where you put the tray has good ventilation. Fifth, use an extra helper. Something that works really well when we're talking about bad odors and litter boxes is activated carbon filters. In fact, I've tested this with my light and I can tell you that it makes quite a difference. Activated carbon is a substance that traps, as they say in TV ads, the particles of bad odor, the substances that produce the bad odor, and prevents them from escaping from the carbon. That's why it stops smelling. Also, if you want to enhance this whole effect, enrich your cat's litter and you may ask me, how do you do this? For very smelly litter boxes, you can use a small layer of baking soda or activated carbon on the bottom of the tray. This way, you'll help all those substances that smell get trapped in that substrate. For your peace of mind. Neither activated carbon nor baking soda are toxic to your feline companion. Talked about all that in a video here on the channel. I'll leave it below. Sixth, the problem may be with your cat. It may be that all of this that I have told you does not help to eliminate the problem because your cat is actually the one producing the bad smell. Some diseases that our feline companions have can make their poop and pee smell worse. For example, when your cat has diarrhea or intestinal dysbiosis, where the bacteria in their intestines are growing a bit crazy, it is normal for their poop to smell worse. It also happens when there are infections in the urine. Our cat's pee smells much stronger. If you notice that your cat starts to pee outside the litter box or that the poop they leave in the litter box is not well formed. We are not going to attack the root of the problem by changing the type of litter or installing activated carbon filters. The solution is to take them to the vet. In our case, Milou's litter box smelled really bad, and it was left like that for a long time until we realized what the problem was. We changed the litter. We went from an absorbent or clumping litter, I already told you, I don't remember very well, to a vegetable type which has much less odor. And in addition, we started testing activated carbon filters, which I had read worked quite well, but I didn't quite believe it. I can tell you that all this changed the situation radically. My cat's litter box now practically doesn't smell like anything. And it's true that we continue with the whole maintenance thing. We clean all the poop and pee. It's made once a day, and at least once every four weeks we empty it and clean it well with soap and water and put it in the sun. With that, I'm telling you that it can also work for you. And if not, check the steps I've given you, because I'm sure that with one of them you'll find the key. And what have you ever done to make your cat's litter box smell a little better? Tell me in the comments so I can find out, and that way we can also help the entire community. Also, if you enjoyed the video, give it a like and subscribe to the channel if you haven't already. If you Click the bell, YouTube will let you know when we have a new video. We also have a secondary channel here on YouTube called Questions and Answers from a Veterinarian. Go to it and you'll know what to do. But don't leave yet, because we have to meet Valletta, who is so comfortable. And Lucia greets us from Lima, Peru. Adriana Hernandez greets us with her feline companion Freddie, who has a very musical name because it's named after the singer. Greetings to both of them and to all of Argentina. And we say goodbye to Nikita, who is very affectionate and very playful, as her human companion Rosalia tells us. And they both greet us from Yira. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel and we'll see you in the next video. I'm going to YouTube. I'm uploading something and now I'm going to do this. Control X, Control v. Zoom to 80%. 2. The microphones. The microphones. We're not going to spend any more money on microphones in this house. The solution in these cases is to take him to the vet. The other day, Rosalia asked me why I didn't say the vet. You already thought about that? A long time ago. And I never ever said it. Yes, it's true. Yes, but the part about how to avoid it has to be in this video. Because otherwise people won't watch it. The audience is renewed. No, I don't want to say the cleaning. Well, yes. Tn. Er. Er. Hi, I'm Tnier. Tn Tn'. Er. It has to be said. Because it says so. It says so. Hi, I'm Aunt Miler. Yan Tien. And thanks for converting. And thanks for making me a hero. Damn it. And thanks. Don't laugh. I'll repeat it all again. Or if they cancel our video. For example, the internal dysbiosis. Or he has dysbiosis. Damn it. What's wrong with me? Or he has internal dysbiosis. Thank you for making me a hero and revealing my true identity.
