When you live with a cat, it is the king of your house, and that means having to put up with all its smells. That's what you think. Hi, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. Although we love cats, there is something we can't hide, and that is that sometimes they smell. No, not them, but the things they do. And this problem is much more important now that we also live in smaller houses. Cats live in apartments with us. They don't go outside as much, and we have to live with their little gifts that they leave for us in the litter box. But this problem of the litter box smelling that those of us who love cats and who live with them seem to be condemned to, is something we suffer because we want to. Because there are a series of very easy tricks that you can do to make your cat's litter box smell much less. The simplest and oldest trick of all, keep it away from you and put it outside. If your house has some kind of utility room or terrace, you can use it to house your cat's litter box. Of course, first you're going to have to make sure that the terrace or utility room is always cat proof by putting up nets or installing some kind of system so that the cat doesn't fall in. But in any case, you're always going to have to leave free access the door open, a small crack in the window that looks out or whatever, so that the cat can freely go in and out to its litter box and doesn't have to depend on you to get up from the sofa and open the door for it to relieve itself. Another very important thing is that if you don't have them outside, you can use well. And if you do have them outside, you can also use covered litter boxes or litter trays. A small micro atmosphere will be created inside and will prevent all the smell from escaping outside. Additionally, there are also some filters that can be placed in litter boxes to prevent all that smell from coming out and flooding our home. Covered litter boxes are also usually quite preferred by cats because they have a slightly more private area to do their business. But remember that this litter box should never be in a passageway, regardless of whether it is a covered litter box, so that the cat is not so impressed and uses it much more comfortably. There are other types of litter boxes that are self cleaning, self cleaning, that leave the solid parts and so on, filter the sand and then also help you keep it much cleaner. You will be able to see the difference quite quickly because, well, it is quite comfortable to use and so on. Use litter that does not smell and you will say, okay, what is that? Because I think they have not invented it yet. Well, we have already talked about quite a few types of litter on the channel we have, but I will give you a brief summary. Clumping litter forms a kind of film around the things your cat has left on it and thus prevents the smell from coming out. For these types of circumstances, we can also use silica litter, which traps odors quite well and is quite apartment friendly. And even if you use litter that doesn't smell at all, you can't neglect cleaning it either. You have to clean your cat's litter, at least perform daily maintenance requirements, remove all solid waste at least once a day and also any small lumps that have formed if the litter is clumping, any liquid parts or even any small stones that have become impregnated with a yellowish color in the silica litter. And now I'll give you a big tip. Never use perfume to clean your cat's litter. Not scented litter or detergent with perfume, because that can make your cat quite uncomfortable and that's why it refuses to use the litter box and starts doing it in another part of the house. I understand that you're currently trying to combat all those odors that you don't like about your cat, but you can't compensate for the bad smell that your kitty's things leave behind with a floral fragrance or worse, a citrus fragrance which makes cats really nervous because they don't like it at all. Now let's move on to one of the questions I got the most in the comments on the video about litter, which was whether you could use baking soda or activated charcoal at the bottom of the litter box to make it smell less. And hey, that's a really good trick that I often recommend to people who live with cats because it helps them deal with odors. A thin layer of baking soda or a thin layer of activated charcoal at the bottom of the litter box under the litter helps retain your cat's scent and prevent it from spreading to the rest of the house. It also helps you keep the litter box clean for much longer because the litter doesn't get ruined as much. The cat will want to keep using it for much longer, and you'll only have to remove the solid parts that form each day. Baking soda is quite inexpensive. The truth is that I recommend that you buy it in regular supermarkets. You don't need to buy it in any specialized area because it's exactly the Same, and it's much cheaper in the supermarket. It's also completely harmless because your cat might swallow a little bit when grooming its paws and after having dug in the litter, nothing happens at all. It's also much cleaner than activated charcoal because it's also whitish and won't leave any marks around. However, activated charcoal is the perfect tool for keeping the smell that your cat's litter box may have at bay. Well, some studies have shown, and I really wish there were more in depth studies, that cats that have activated charcoal at the bottom of their litter box use that litter box much more than any other. That is, they have placed two identical litter boxes in the same area with the same type of litter and in one they have put activated charcoal and in the other they have put nothing or they have put sodium carbonate. Cats always use the one with activ charcoal more and that is because it retains much more of all those molecules, all those aromas that you may not even perceive. And they always keep them much more under control. Therefore, cats are much more encouraged to use the litter box. The litter lasts much longer and you can save a few euros on your cat's litter each month. However, there is one thing you need to know about activated charcoal. Activated charcoal usually stains quite a bit. In fact, if you ask your vet, you will see them explain clearly why we sometimes use it in the clinic to treat poisoning. It is a very, very, very fine powder. A black color that is quite persistent in your cat may leave little marks around your house. Therefore, you have to be prepared if you are going to use it to know that you may find a little more dirt outside the litter box. But anyway, it's nothing that can't be fixed with a broom and cleaning a little more frequently near the litter box, which is where you will surely find the footprint. And well, really, with four or five small things, as you have just seen, it is quite easy to keep the odor issue at bay. The baking soda and especially the activated charcoal really do work. Try it because it will help you a lot. If you have that problem of not knowing where to put the tray, you will see a quite significant difference and your cat will like it much more. Therefore, well, look, they are all advantages. If your cat likes it and you are more comfortable with it, the relationship improves too. If, in addition to teaching you how to clean a litter box properly and keep it in perfect condition, I also had to set up a cat human relations agency. And that's it. What kind of technique do you use to keep odors at bay? Do you use any of these things I just told you about. Have you heard of activated charcoal? Hey, if you're using it, let me know in the comments so I can find out if it works for you too. And also, if you have any other technique that you'd like to share with the entire community of pets and happy families, go ahead so we can all learn. And that's it for today's video. If you liked it, give it a like and share it with everyone. Remember to subscribe to our channel if you haven't already. And also hit the bell so that YouTube will notify you every time we upload new content. Also, remember that we have a secondary channel here on YouTube called Questions and Answers from a Veterinarian with a new very short video almost every day, so you never get bored. And today we meet Nit and Palude, who say good morning to us. They live with Ankovita Casillas. And Cecilia introduces us to Nemesis and acknowledges that she is the real owner of the house. And this Nordic beauty is Odin, who lives with the owner. Isa, thank you very much for following the channel, happy pets and Families, and see you in the next video. It's the last bells. Huh? The penultimate ones. These are the ones that now ring at the end three times. And then at 8 o' clock they ring. Clone, clone, clone, clone. All the bells ring. Is this unbearable or not? No, no, no. How do I say it? Oh, it's true. Keep it. Right. If it's that in addition to teaching you how to clean a litter box properly and keeping you. If it's that in addition to teaching you how to. No. Or maybe not, of course. Well, you see. No. Ha. That's what you think. Shut up, cat. No. The crazy cat. Okay, it wasn't a joke.
