Hello. Welcome to Happy Pets and Families. In today's video, I'm going to talk about foods that are forbidden for your dog. Feeding is something that you have to address from the time your companion is a puppy. It's the most important thing for maintaining their health at all times. The issue of feeding is something that pet owners most often neglect. Just like when we make our shopping lists, the feed and food that are on offer for animals are usually not the most suitable because their formulation is usually not optimal. This is something that we veterinarians have to emphasize a lot when you come to the consultation. Cheap food for your pet is great for the family budget, but in the end it affects the quality of what you are giving your pet because the ingredients are usually not the best. Your pet must be able to have its needs met with the food that you provide. It is not necessary to supplement that food. One of the most common mistakes you make is giving your dog. In addition to the feed, you buy homemade foods that are intended for human use and are not formulated for them. These foods introduce a great imbalance into your dog's diet. If you offer your dog everyday products that you have in your regular diet in addition to its feed, you are giving it an extra supply of fats and calories that your dog does not need, which will most likely end up putting on weight. It is possible to feed your dog only homemade products, but this diet has to be specifically designed for your dog, taking into account its needs and calorie intake. Also, keep in mind that there are some foods that you normally eat and even condiments in your food that can be extremely toxic to your dog. So pay attention because now I am going to give you a list of foods that are prohibited for your dog. Take note and do not ignore any and if you have been using these with your dog up until now, you should eliminate them from its diet. Processed Meats and Sausages this group includes many foods that you usually have in the fridge such as mortadella, ham, or even cold cuts like salami or salami. These types of foods are highly processed because in addition to the meat, they have a large amount of salt and fat as well as other additives that we often don't pay enough attention to. I would also like to include in this group of foods the types of sausages that are sold prepared for pets in supermarkets. If you look closely at the labels, these foods are very fatty. It is clear that your dog loves them because they are very succulent, but they are a very unbalanced diet that will undoubtedly make your dog fat and affect his health. Do not give him fatty foods or bones. In the past, dogs were fed with human waste, fatty parts of meat, chicken bones, chicken skin. They do not provide a sufficiently important source of nutrition for your pet, and they also carry quite a few risks. When your dog eats a fatty diet, their pancreas is put under great strain to digest these fats. This situation often leads to pancreatitis that ultimately has to be treated in the clinic. If you also feed your dog bones, one of the bones may splinter and cause an injury inside their intestine, stomach, or even a perforation. In some cases, bones can also cause intestinal obstruction. Just because something has always been made does not mean it is healthy for your pet. And if you can also choose to give them a much more appropriate diet for them, why would you feed them with leftovers from your food? Do not give milk to your pets, especially if this milk is from a species that is not theirs. Do not think that your little ones are babies for life. When your puppy is past their lactation period, they will at least partially lose the ability to digest this milk. Cow's milk is responsible for the appearance of many clinical signs such as diarrhea or even constipation. Giving your pets milk will ensure that they have a somewhat delicate gastrointestinal health, so you should avoid it. You also have to consider that if the milk is whole milk, you will also be providing them with a large amount of fat in a food that is not really providing them with enough nutrients. Chocolate. Who can resist a bar of chocolate? Although what I am going to tell you is vopuli, we cannot ignore it. Chocolate, in addition to having fats that are added during its production, contains a compound that is toxic to your dog. The compound is called theobromine and is related to caffeine, which, by the way, is also toxic. Unlike coffee, chocolate is sweet and your dog may get addicted to it by eating it, or you may get addicted to it by giving it to him. The theobromine in chocolate affects the health of your dog's nervous system and also the health of the digestive system. If your dog ingests a small amount of pure chocolate, or if he ingests a large amount of milk chocolate, it can pose a very serious problem for his life. Because it is poisonous, it is completely toxic to your dog. Of course, this section also includes everything that is poultry and refined sugars, because although they are not really toxic for your dog, their consumption causes the amount of sugar in their blood to skyrocket and puts some parts of their body at risk. Specifically, it is very harmful to the retina and like a diabetic, it could suffer irreversible blindness. One year at Christmas, I had an unforgettable experience. A family brought me their dog and who had managed to climb onto the table where they had the chocolates and Christmas sweets. The little guy was completely intoxicated after having consumed almost an entire box of chocolates. I had to stabilize him all night and although the animal finally survived, he was very seriously ill for a few days. So to avoid scares at Christmas, put the box of chocolates where your pet cannot reach it. Be careful with the food you give him as a reward. Training Biscuits and treats sold in pet food stores are very unbalanced foods with a high fat content. They are made this way so that your pet finds them tasty and wants to eat them right away. Personally, I'm not very much in favor of this type of food or way of rewarding your pet. The animal will associate the reward with giving it something different. It does not have to be a training biscuit. When your dog is happy with the action you are rewarding it for, it will value any display of affection. You give it exactly the same. You can give it its kibble instead of these biscuits, training or treats. And in this way you will prevent it from ingesting a large amount of fat. Condiments did you know that something as harmless as an onion can kill your dog? Garlic and onion contain compounds called thiosulfates, which, when your dog ingests them, are extremely toxic to its blood cells. This is something that many people don't know and it's one more reason not to feed your dog food that you make at home because it's one of the most common condiments in any dish and it's also very harmful to your little one. Keep your pet away from these vegetables. They're usually within easy reach and dogs can also get to these places. So, like Dracula, garlic is out of the question. Avoid fruits. Although fruits are very healthy and have a lot of water, they also have a lot of sugar. It's not the same for a 60kg person to eat a slice of melon than for the same slice of melon to be given to a 10 kilogram dog. The amount of sugar that your pet will have in its blood will be much higher than what you will have after eating the same amount of fruit. In addition, there are some compounds in vegetables and fruits that can be toxic to your pet, such as grapes and raisins, which pose a great risk to your dog's kidneys. Did you know that accidentally eating the pits of these fruits also poses a risk to your dog? In our practice, we often have to treat animals that have eaten peach, apricot or fruit pits that have large pits because they have gotten stuck in their intestines. When an intestinal obstruction occurs, surgery is usually required to remove them, so be very careful. Although you often give your pet these foods and nothing happens, which is why you can rest easy. Keep everything I've just told you in mind because if they eat a slightly larger amount of them on occasion, it can become a serious health problem. And that's it for today's video. I hope you enjoyed it and that you share it on your social networks. Think about how it can help your friends and acquaintances change the way they feed their dogs so that they can have better health.
