Anticonceptivos para mascotas. ¿Mejor que la castración? 🐱🐶 | ¿A favor o en contra?

This is a YouTube video titled "Anticonceptivos para mascotas. ¿Mejor que la castración? 🐱🐶 | ¿A favor o en contra?" published in October 2019. The content features a veterinarian named Carlos discussing contraceptive methods for pets, particularly female dogs and cats, comparing them with castration. The video covers the pros and cons of hormonal contraceptives, their application, risks, and the veterinarian's personal opinion favoring castration as the best method for controlling pet birth rates. The tone is educational and informal, aimed at pet owners seeking advice on pet sterilization options.
Carlos, what do you want to eat? Castration. What movie do you want to watch at the cinema today? Castration. Are you watching a series on Netflix right now? Castration. But all you know how to talk about is castration. Castration. And what is today's video about today? It's not about castration. Hello, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. It seems that when many veterinarians ask us about anything, all we know to say is castration. And that's because many of us think that we need to control the birth rate of pets, dogs and cats to prevent a problem as big as the one we currently have with abandonment. But don't worry, I'm not here to bother you with castration today. I've already made my position on this subject very clear on the channel, and I'll leave the video here for you to watch after this one. Surely if you've been searching the Internet, you've seen that there are other contraceptive methods besides castration. And that's precisely what I'm going to talk to you about today. The pros and cons of these methods. And at the end of the video, I'll tell you what I think about them. As you probably already know, there are contraceptive treatments for animals, for our pets. But these treatments only refer to female dogs and cats because they are focused on preventing females from going into heat and therefore not being able to get pregnant. And there are no contraceptives that are used in males. Not in males. The patriarchy of the industry happens the same as with the contraceptive pill for people. Women take them, males don't. Well, that's right there. Men. That's what I'm getting confused about. These treatments are a cocktail of hormones that are given to female dogs or cats to prevent their eggs from maturing and therefore from going into heat. The difference with respect to the female contraceptive pill is that, in addition, in pets, we have the option of giving them injections. In other words, we have pills and we have them injected. It's clear for any type of therapy in which we use medicines, there are pros and cons. Let's start with the pros so that you know what advantages this type of medicine has over castration. The first is that they are a very good way to prevent unwanted pregnancies in your pets in a fairly economical way. Normally, the contraceptive treatment for a female dog or cat is usually much cheaper than castration. Therefore, if your budget does not allow you to afford to castrate your pet, you can resort to this type of treatment because obviously the cost is a little lower. In addition, they're also very easy to apply because, well, giving a pill to a female dog is super easy. Giving it to a female cat, perhaps not so much. But hey, for female cats and dogs, there is also the option of giving it an injection. You just have to go to the doctor's office, have the vet apply it, and that's it. Another advantage is that it doesn't result in permanent sterilization. Only your dog or cat won't be able to have offspring while you're applying the treatment. When the treatment is discontinued, your dog will be able to have a litter, if that's what you want. But that's not a bit irresponsible. Yes, yes. It's one thing to be responsible and another thing to, well, be a pro. Because at a certain point you might say, look, I don't want to. But then suddenly, well, you want to have a litter. There are people who want to do it, although I don't agree with them. And we put that as a pro in quotes, right?
Yes, because later I'm also going to put the same thing as a con. Another advantage that I see is that people who help colonies can apply them occasionally to some animals that may not let themselves be captured. Because I know that many of you do the CES method. That is, you capture the kitten. Yes. Because they are cats that live in a colony. You capture the kitten, take it to the clinic, castrate it, and release it again. But there are some of them that even then do not let themselves be captured or sterilized. Therefore, you can apply this type of treatment to control birth control in them. Well, obviously you are not going to be able to put the pill in the mouth of those types of cats, but you will be able to put it in. Oh, hello. Hey, come here. Oh, how pretty you are. Holla. Holla. Hello, Hello, Hello. Oh, oh, oh, oh.
Look, there comes another one. Hello. What did he do to you?
He got me covered in mud, for starters.
Look, he gave me a medal. Okay, well, let's get to the point. I got lost. It's clear that you won't be able to put the pill in a kitten's mouth from a colony, but you can put it in soft food, for example. You leave it nearby, you watch that the cat eats it and that another cat doesn't eat it, and that's it. You can apply it like this. Yes, because method C is to take male and female cats, right? Yes, it's to take male and female cats. The interesting thing is to start with the female cats, because female cats are the ones that can produce the most offspring. Obviously, the thing is that male cats also mate with many more female cats, so. Well, you have to take both. In this really cool video where I told you about Maria Jose's story and how she helped the colonies, you can see what the CES method is and what it's like to manage a feline colony. And now for the last advantage, which I think really makes the difference. With this type of method, they can be applied without going under the knife. Why is this an advantage? Because there may be some dogs or cats that are already old or have some type of condition that prevents them from going under the knife because they will not tolerate anesthesia well, which may be the only solution to prevent them from continuing to bring offspring into this world. For those animals for whom surgery is contraindicated, contraceptive treatments can be our best ally. But what if the family of a dog or cat decides, oh, my friend, the cat doesn't like going to the vet, let's give her the contraceptive and uses that as an excuse. Right. Well, now I'm going to take care of discouraging you when I start explaining the cons, let's get to them. What's up? And there's plenty to talk about. One of the main disadvantages that I see with these types of methods is that they are not definitive. Therefore, your dog or cat can get pregnant either because the medication stops working, because it has an effect over time and obviously runs out, or. Or because since it is a drug, it is not 100% effective, and therefore that can lead to unwanted pregnancies. And related to the fact that it does not have a definitive effect comes the next disadvantage. You have to always remember that you have to continue giving her the treatment. In addition, this means that although in the short term the treatment is much cheaper than castration, you think that you are going to have to give it to her for the rest of her life. Therefore, every time you have to go, you have to pay to give her either the injection or the pills. And in the end, it will not be cheaper than castration. In other words, you fooled us before. Well, for a specific moment, right? If you're a bit short on money, it can be a good option for a specific moment, as I'm saying. But if you're considering it as a permanent procedure, in the end, castration works out much better for you, of course. And how often should it be administered? It depends on the treatment. In the case of injections, it's usually every five or six months. In the case of pills, it depends on whether it's a female dog or a female cat. In female dogs, it's given once a day according to the instructions, and in female cats, it's given once a week. But anyway, it will depend on the weight and the treatment you're using. It's possible that your vet has recommended another treatment that requires a different method of administration. I'm talking about a general rule. And some treatments also recommend that you apply them intermittently. What does that mean? That they can't be applied continuously throughout the dog's life without stopping, without taking periods in which the dog or cat can rest. And why is all this a disadvantage? Well, because at that time when you are taking a break, they may go into heat, and as a result of that heat, they may have an unwanted litter. And now let's move on to the con, which, in my opinion, is the most important, the main drawback of giving birth control treatments to dogs and cats. The main problem with birth control is that they can have a large number of side effects. Just think that you are giving your dog or cat a cocktail of hormones very regularly because you are also giving them every six months or even every day. And that at the end of the day, is going to have a series of repercussions on the health of pets. No medication is completely harmless. All of them can always have contraindications As a result of this treatment being so frequent and prolonged over time, the breasts of dogs and cats can appear to increase in size or even develop tumors. Problems can also occur in the uterus, such as thickening of the uterine wall and even pyometra, a uterine infection that almost always requires surgery to remove the uterus and ovaries as if it were a sterilization procedure. However, there is much more risk because in that case, your dog or cat is already suffering from an infection inside the uterus. In addition to all this, the they are contraindicated if there are other types of hormonal diseases, such as diabetes, or they may also interfere with other hormones in the body. Therefore, it is something that must be taken into account before deciding on one option or another. But these side effects occur very frequently. If you look at the package insert, the package insert, which is what we have to rely on scientifically, tells you that they only occur in 1 in 10,000 cats. The truth is that I think it is underestimated because I have seen it much more frequently. And I have seen that there have been kittens that are given injections or pills, and in the end they end up suffering from this disease. If it had been 1 in 10,000, I would have seen almost none in the practice of my profession because the proportion is very, very low. It is almost improbable that you would see it. How many cats have to pass through your hand for you to see two cases? 20,000? 30,000? To see three cases? Obviously, I have not seen two or three. I have seen many more cases. Well, now let's go with my personal opinion. Remember that as always, it is from my point of view. Therefore, if you do not think the same as me, please do not crucify me for it. All these pros and cons that I have mentioned are always compared to castration to definitively eliminating your dog or cat's heat in order to extract the ovaries and uterus. If you follow me on the channel, you already know that I am completely in favor of controlling the birth rate of pets because it is the most responsible way we have to prevent the overpopulation of animals, dogs and stray cats that are causing a huge problem in today's society. But obviously one method does not equal another because depending on the risks, we have to choose the one that can cause the least harm to your pet. What do I think about all this? Well, I am in favor of castration over contraceptive methods, Although I think that this type of medicine is good for certain circumstances. Castration has much fewer risks than giving your cat or dog a cocktail of hormones on a regular basis to prevent them from having offspring. If you are thinking that you do not want your cat or dog to have a litter at any time in their life, it makes no sense to resort to contraceptive methods because you may not be considering the issue of castration because you are afraid of anesthesia. However, anesthesia and a surgery such as castration which is done very routinely, have very, very low risks. Most of the time it goes well. And except in cases where it can obviously be complicated due to some circumstance, your dog or cat will normally be perfectly well recovered within a week. In addition, given the possibility that the contraceptive treatment fails, that you forget to use it, that they are obviously not 100% effective, and that there may be an unwanted pregnancy at some point, castration gives us practically 100% assurance that your dog or cat will not get pregnant again under any circumstances. If right now you're at a point where you don't really know what to do you've started reading on the Internet and you've said, look how great my kitty doesn't have to go under the knife to avoid getting pregnant. Because there are these types of methods with this video. What I'm trying to do is help you make the best decision for your pet. But I can't hide from you that for me the best option is castration for everything I've just told you. And that's it for today's video. If you liked it, give it a like and share it with everyone. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel and we'll see you in the next video. The video in which I recommended how to prevent your cat from waking you up at night by banging on doors, if you remember, it was by putting aluminum foil on the bottom has aroused a lot of interest on your part and many of you have sent it to me in the comments. Christina Vega tells me, I watch this video while my cat looks at me defiantly from next to me. I hope she doesn't pay attention to the message. Well, Christina, but what interests me in the end, did you use it or not? How did it go? Tell me. Hero33 tells me this weekend we're going to do some DIY to try it out. Sandro Martinez tells me what a useful and cute video. And a cat's face, little hearts in its eyes. Thank you very much, Sandra. Ah, look. Now the most interesting part begins. But apart from the interest that many of you have shown, there have been people who have already done their homework and applied the technique and have told me, like Nuria Martinez, it really works with many exclamations. I've been in my new apartment since Saturday and from the first night I put the aluminum foil but on the door handles and it hasn't fallen off even once. Thank you very much for your advice. Well, thank you very much to you, Nuriac, and I hope your cat has finally let you rest. Andrea Fernandez Grella tells me it really worked, but when I opened the door there was aluminum foil everywhere. Well, I didn't say that it couldn't happen. In the video, Margatorio Romero tells me on Facebook, it works. How cool. Thank you very much. Thank you very much to you, Marga. And I'm glad you were finally able to sleep soundly. And if you've got the bug and you don't know whether or not your cat will respect the aluminum foil on your doors, please try it and tell me in the comments. We have a satisfaction guarantee here. Happy pets and families. See you next week. Here you have to ask me whatever you want. And I'm only going to say castration. For me, the joke is that I'm only going to answer castration. And he tells me, hey, that's all you know how to say. You do it later. And that's it. I've already made my position on the channel very clear. Right, but there are really pros and cons. I mean, it's not for and against. They're pros and cons about whatever you want. If this is not related to medicine or non medicine or anything. Because I think the interesting thing is that I can answer castration to whatever you ask me. Whatever you want. I mean, the video looks like a pro or con, but there are pros and cons. You can mess with those who are for or against. That's clear. Well, it's like we only have one thing on our lips. Veterinarians who seem to only say castration, castration, Castration. When veterinarians ask us, you're a scoundrel. You're a scoundrel.
Okay, Contraceptive treatments. Contraceptive treatments. Today we're going to talk about this topic with this word. Look how muddy it is. It's okay if I called it that. Machismo everywhere, as always. See you later.
Goodbye.
Oh, here's another one. Okay, and now I have a blank space. If you want to make sure that your cat or dog doesn't give birth to more offspring, that's definitely not possible. And many of you have done it to me. And many of you have done it to me. And many of you have told me. I don't know what to say. Hey, what did he do? Sure, it's a greyhound. Look there, there. Oh, okay.
