Aprende todo sobre los carlinos con Pippa, la diva canina

Carlos the vet and Alba discuss pug care with Pippa, a pug in Seville. They cover breed traits, health issues in flat-faced dogs, exercise needs, diet, behavior, and grooming. A practical guide for pug owners.
She knows how to do tricks, she knows how to sit when there are treats involved, and she knows how to wait to eat the treat until she is told to. We can try that there. One, two, three. Hello, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. It's a little cold today and we've come to the park to meet Pippa, a beautiful pug, and her family, Alba and Juan Jose. Hey. We're going to talk to Alba about how she cares for Pippa, who has lived with her for six years. Come with me to meet them. Hello, I'm Alba and this is Pippa, a six year old pug. As you can see, she's a beautiful dog. This breed is very affectionate, although it often causes health problems. But hey, if you know how to handle it, she's very grateful since she's been with me for six years, since she was four months old. She comes with me to work. She's a very mischievous, nervous dog, but very affectionate, very smart and intelligent. She comes with us on trips, she gets on the train. That's why she's so small. She gets on the train without any problem and she loves it. She loves the car, she loves traveling, she knows how to do tricks, she knows how to sit when there are treats involved and she knows how to wait to eat the treat until she's told. Let's try it and see. Come on, sit. Look. Come, look. Come, sit. Very good. Lie down. Very good. Stay there. Stay there. Stay. Come. There. One, two, three. Good. Very good. Very good. Very good.
I'm sure many of you have seen them in the parks and you find them funny. The pug is a breed that originated in China from the Tibet area where they were bred and where they were one of the favorite dogs of Buddhist monks to guard their temples. They guard houses well and are dogs that are a bit territorial, although they are small in size, friendly with people and also with other animals. And they socialize well. Well, Alba, you know that Pippa is the typical flat nosed dog. I don't know if you're familiar with what it's like to be a barkycephalid dog, but they tend to be this type of animal that has a very flat face, very flat. These animals have the same structures in less space as a normal dog. Their nose is a little shorter and their eyes are a little more bulging because their face is more cut out. This makes the nose a little narrower and allows less air to pass through it. And the palate is a little longer, which also makes it difficult for the animal to breathe. That's why you see boxers hugs French bulldogs and English bulldogs panting. When you walk through the park, they usually breathe a little worse than other animals, which is why they have to breathe through their mouths. Right now we're in the province of Seville and it's usually quite hot here. How does she cope with the summer? Bad. As soon as it starts to get hot, we have to try to avoid taking walks very early in the morning or at night. And at home, as soon as we turn on the air conditioning, she looks for the place where the air is coming from because otherwise she has a really bad time. Honestly, when she breathes through her nose, very little air comes in. She has to breathe more through her mouth and that makes her feel quite stressed because she can't ventilate properly. And of course, when it's hot, especially if she does a lot of intense exercise, you do well to take a small bottle of water to the park, for example. I can't go out without it. The exercise has to be a little more moderate because they can't run long distances because they'll eventually run out of breath. You have to be very careful. If you take them out for a walk in the summer at midday or in an area where there's no shade, you should always do it with a little water. And you should keep the walks short since they are flat nosed animals that breathe a little worse. You should always try to make sure they are always worn for walks. In Pippa's case, her family has provided her with a good, safe and sturdy harness so that she can walk without being able to escape. This is important because the collar can press on the animal's airway and even make it harder for the animal to breathe, making it harder for them to breathe. Clean her nose of mucus because this will prevent the nostrils from becoming blocked by mucous secretions that prevent her from getting air. How is she with people? Well, she is very good with people. I think she thinks she is a human rather than a dog. She usually gets along well with everyone unless she smells something strange. But normally she does. When we are walking down the street and a dog owner walks by with their dog, she always goes with a person, never with the dog. They are extremely sociable animals and very friendly with people. Very suitable for people who have never had a dog before because they are very easy to train. And they are also suitable for homes and families where there are small children. And they really like that to guard their family a little and have a little control. They respond to that behavior? Absolutely. However, you have to make sure they are well socialized, because their territorial nature can lead them to be a little aggressive if they have not learned to interact with people and other dogs well. And how about other dogs?
Well, it depends. Lately they have had a better attitude, but they don't like them very much. She always barks at them, or when she smells them and sees that the other one is smaller or cowers a little, she takes advantage of that circumstance.
She takes advantage of the fact that the other dog is submissive. Right.
Look at her. She is now aware of that man, the enemy.
One of the things we like the most about her face are those slightly bulging eyes. For example, if you walk among bushes or tall plants, the branches can injure the surface of the eye because it protrudes a little more from your face. What kind of care do you normally take with your little eyes?
Well, I'm lucky with her, to be honest, because although they're quite bulging, we've never had any problems in the six years she's been with. Her dermatitis often appears in the folds of her face, so you have to take special care with the hygiene of this area, drying it very well after bathing, and also those little folds on her face, which Pippa is very lucky not to have too many of. Do you take any kind of care with them? Yes. When I bathe her, I dry the crease of her nose very well so that it doesn't get wet and a sore or wound doesn't form. Or I put Vaseline on her little nose, which is also very dry.
Right. There are a few sores that can occur, and in the end it can cause a health problem. Apart from that, I don't know if you know that puppies, especially other small brachycephalic dogs, such as bulldogs, sometimes tend to have back problems because their vertebrae are a little shorter, and that makes them predisposed to suffering from problems such as herniated discs and back problems. Since you're not going to tell them not to lift weights, because they won't.
Lift weights, one of the most important things you can do to care for them is, for example, to prevent them from going up and down from heights, such as the sofa or stairs, and to prevent them from getting hit, especially when going down, which is more dangerous than going up. Okay. This is important because you can prevent them from climbing on furniture such as the sofa or chairs, and you should try to ensure that their bed is always on the floor to prevent Them from having to make the effort to climb up and down from heights which could put a strain on their backs. How did she end up at your house? How did you manage to find her? I didn't have anyone. I didn't know anyone who could help me. So I searched on the Internet and when I got home, she had a bit of a type of mange, I don't know, a type of skin problem. And I discovered that she came from Eastern Europe.
Do you know about breeders in Eastern Europe now? Of course. At the time I didn't know anything. I didn't have any information, but now I do. There are many breeders that we can find on the Internet that do not guarantee that the animals there have been raised in a hygienic or sanitary manner, that the health conditions are not always optimal, and that you should always try to find the maximum guarantees in that regard. Because they also use the animals fur, of course. They simply use them to breed and make money. And that is something worrisome. There are breeder associations that can help you locate breeders that are approved, authorized, that have their controls.
That you can visit, see the facilities and see how they treat the parents of the puppies, the puppies themselves and so on.
Alba. And regarding food, one thing, she eats very anxiously. Yes, they are very gluttonous animals and they are very anxious about food. You can try buying feeders that reduce anxiety. You will have to be very aware of the diet you give them to prevent them from getting fat. Normally light diets or even special diets for rachycephalop dogs, such as those for French bulldogs or English bulldogs, tend to be very well balanced and help the animal always stay in shape.
If it were possible, it would eat all day long. I have to distribute its feed into three meals, like we do every time we eat. I give it its share of feed and then it always gets a little bit of something that I know it can eat. Right. But as a kind of reward for something like that. And then the feed that I have to give it is always a light piezo, a low piezo. So that it does not gain weight, right?
Yes, because if it does, it will gain weight. Even if I give it a small amount and so on. I always give it dry feed.
Yes, most of the time, if not always. Yes. I remember when we changed its adult puppy feed.
Yes.
I had to change it and I gave her a kibble and a feed that is low in calories and cereals and rice. And that because she gets fat.
Being a brachycephalic. Animal also makes them snore. Therefore, if you are in love with a pug, you have to know that you will have to get used to her snoring at night. Because you see that she snores, right?
Yes, a lot. Like a person. There are times when I have to throw her out of wherever she is, because it is not possible. But anyway, you get used to it and get along well. But she does snore a lot. Much more in the summer. Yes, usually more in the summer. As soon as she sleeps, if she gets into a position that is tight around her neck or such, I have to move her to change her position, because then I put the fan near her. If I have to leave the house for something and I know it is going to be hot, I leave the air conditioning on or leave the fan nearby. It is very hot here in Seville and it is not possible. I cannot leave her there, the poor.
Thing, she does her own thing because.
She also likes the sun. And as soon as there's a ray of sunlight, she sits down and gets a tan. She does love swimming in the water at the beach. She loves it. But I also bought her a life jacket. She loves chiquana. The waves there.
Are bearable for her. She loves it. She loves it.
And that's it for today's video. Thanks to Alba and Pippa for being with us today. Thanks to you. Pippa is really lovely and we would love to spend much more time with her.
Very good, very good, very good.
And to you, thank you very much for following the channel and watching the video. Share it. If you have a relative who has a pug and wants to know a little more about how to care for them. If you liked the video, give it a like and tell us if you have any techniques to take care of your pug. And keep it always in good health. Thank you very much for following Happy pets and families and I'll see you in the next video. Now the cuts begin. Now you'll see. Stay still, you're a hound.
No, this one says no.
And she was on the right track. Look at her.
And you're not behaving very well.
How nice, Pipe. How nice. Come on, come on. What's wrong with you?
How fat. Oh, how fat. What a big belly. Pretty girl.
What's wrong? Pretty girl. Pretty girl. Go away. Come here, come here, come here.
