It features Javier Pariente providing a detailed walkthrough of maintenance, cleaning, and algae control in a large, mature aquarium at the Kiwoko headquarters. The content includes explanations of aquarium care techniques, plant pruning, filtration system cleaning, and a request for viewer suggestions on adding compatible fish species. The video is primarily a monologue by Javier Pariente with occasional brief interjections from another speaker.
Foreign.
Today I am at the Kiboko headquarters, and it's time to do an update, cleaning, and maintenance of this mega aquarium. As you know, it's over five years old. And during this time, we've made some updates to what we have inside. Today, what we're going to do is some maintenance. I'm going to show you some fish that I've had to add because we had a small algae problem. And with your help, what we want to do is get suggestions for adding new fish. Well, as you can see, this is a fully mature aquarium. And it's true that in recent months, we've had a problem with filamentous algae, which is why we've added a family of balloon moths. This species usually works very well if you want to eradicate this type of algae in an aquarium. It's true that they take time. And as you can see, the algae area is pretty much under control. Today, what I'm going to do is some pruning. I'm going to try to trim as much as I can. In this type of aquarium with a nutritious substrate, we can't do a regular siphoning. What we're going to do is a water change. Let's add new water, clean the algae thoroughly, and remove some of the plants that are no longer healthy. And before putting your hands in the aquarium for safety's sake, as I always tell you, it's important to disconnect all devices. Remember to disconnect the pumps and heaters in this situation. I'm going to leave the lights on so you can see what I'm going to prune, and so we can perform completely safe maintenance. Okay, I'm going to start releasing the movement pumps, and I'm also going to cut off many of the algae that are hindering the proper functioning of the filtration system. Okay, this is what I wanted to show you. Look. This is a plant that has been colonized by these algae. The problem with these filamentous algae is that they grow very quickly, and in the end, they usually cover the plants and don't allow photosynthesis. What happens? The plant ends up dying. What we are going to do is prune the plants that are affected by this type of algae. And with the help of the mollusks, we are going to be able to have total control over this algae plague that we had in the aquarium. Another thing that I am going to do, and this is a bit more cleaning, is that this whole area has to be a swimming area. I am going to remove Many of these plants that have been colonizing the front part. Well, look at these roots. This is a Cryptocurina baseline. This type of plant grows superbly. And look at the group of roots that I was removing. I insist these plants always grow well at the back of the aquarium. If you let them grow in the front area, you will not be able to see the fish. That is why it is important to always keep it in check. Well, let's go with this group. Well, look at this beautiful Cryptocurrena bisella. But it has to go outside. Now it is my turn to prune this Masonic sword. As you can see, there are many of the leaves that are already very deteriorated and I am going to cut them. I'm going to cut these as low as I can on the stem of what would be the leaf. As you can see, look how damaged it was. And this one needed pruning. And here I always try to cut as low as I can on the leaf. Look how the pump is attached here to the plants. Lets release this. Look at this. And I'm going to try to avoid trapping the cable. I'm going to continue pruning, although it looks like I'm doing a big, big pruning. Believe it or not, these plants multiply and grow super fast. In two months, the aquarium will be almost the same. Okay, very good. Tick tock, tick tock. Well, I'm going to continue removing the rest of the algae before cleaning the windows.
Okay. Okay, perfect.
In this case, since this is a deep maintenance job, I'm going to use Perlon, but I'm also going to use this algae remover with a blade. It works very well. Of course, I, I recommend that you use it very carefully because if you don't, you could scratch the glass and it would be a shame to damage the glass of an aquarium like this. You can see here, the Perlon helps us to eliminate a lot of algae. But it is true that I have a lot of very encrusted algae and I will need to use this algae remover with a blade. I have found another use for this super algae cleaner. That look helps me reach the lower parts that I can't reach easily.
Okay.
Well, it's also time to scrub the back and clean it well.
Okay.
Well let's clean this little edge well. Remove all this. Minerals often accumulate here, which is this white part. These minerals enter the water either because the water has minerals or because different complexes that are used in different buffers are added to maintain good water quality as you Know, before cleaning the filter, it is important to have some water ready. This water has to be dechlorinated or water that comes from the aquarium itself. Why? Because I don't want to lose many of those beneficial bacteria that help us with the filtration system. That's why I'm going to take some water out of this aquarium so I can clean the sponges later. Now let's zoom in. Which is the filtration system of this aquarium. It's a four stage filtration system. Today I'm only going to clean two stages. I'm going to leave the other two stages for 15 days. It's not good to make a big change to the filtration system because in any case, many of the bacteria that are helping the ecosystem are going to be lost. Of course. I want to show you so you can see. How are you doing with your aquarium? Obviously, we're going to clean all of this here.
Okay.
Well, as you can see, this is quite dirty. The water is very saturated, so I'm going to have to do a second rinse. Of course, I'm going to keep the filtration system clean, but this is what I wanted you to be able to see. This is basically the result of the cleaning. This is usually one of the places where I take advantage of this aquarium water, which is rich in nitrates and is great for plants and shrubs like these. In this aquarium, I have a tank with which I usually fill the water. It is water that is previously conditioned. I usually use a conditioner before putting it in the aquarium. You can see that the aquarium water is a little cloudy. That's normal. I've been cleaning the filtration system to enrich the biological population of the filtration system. I've used stability, and all that's left is to clean it a little, organize the covers. And now I'll ask you the question I have for you. Well, it seems that nothing has happened. But yes, as you can see, we have pruned the back area. I have cleaned the entire front area of plants so that the fish can swim better. I have eliminated many of the plants that are affected by these filamentous algae. We have our helpers, the mollus, who are going to finish helping us mechanically by eating the algae. And here's the. Speaking of fish, I want to add new fish to the aquarium and I wanted to know what your suggestions were. Of course, taking into account the compatibility of the fish that are already in the aquarium. That is to say, we have some large angelfish we already have some neons and some larger cardinals. We have some mollies. But I would really like to hear what fish you suggest for this aquarium. Leave me a comment and I'll try to answer it with what I consider to be the best cosmopolitan aquarium, where we have fish from all over the world and also plants.
Sam.
