Hello, family. Welcome back to the Experto Animal Channel. In case you don't know me, I'm Alba Perez. I'm a veterinarian. I'm the CEO of the Vetropea Group and I'm the manager of the Vetropia Veterinary Clinic located in Las Francaises del Valles. Today I'm here to talk to you a little bit about what you can do in an emergency. If you have the bad luck of your animal having a seizure at home and you find yourself in a situation where you don't really know how to act. Well, first of all, I know it's easy to say, and sometimes it can be very complicated, but stay calm as best you can. Remember that in the end, an epileptic seizure is a huge overactivation in the little head in the central nervous system. Therefore, loud noises where the animal detects too much stress or where you touch it a lot can cause the seizure to last longer and become even more violent. It can also sometimes be difficult to recognize if your animal is really having an epileptic seizure, since there may even be partial convulsions that are not the typical ones that we are used to seeing in movies or online videos. And this can make it unclear what is happening. One piece of advice that I have for you that can be very useful for the veterinary visit that you will necessarily have to make is to record at least five seconds of what is happening to your animal. This way you can show it to your vets so that it is easier for them to understand what has happened and to be able to act accordingly. So, first of all, calm down, record a little bit, and that's it. We will get to work right away. If your animal suddenly suffers an epileptic seizure, the first thing you will need to do is go to where it is as quietly and calmly as possible and remove any objects from its surroundings that it could hurt itself with, that it could bump into, that it could throw to the ground and cause it even more fear. So the first thing to do is clear the area. Then remember, try. You can be close to it and pet it calmly while speaking to it in a low voice. But under no circumstances should you hold it, restrain it, or prevent it from moving. Under no circumstances should you raise your voice, and under no circumstances should you start turning lights on and off. The best thing is to do it in the dark, without noise and in peace. The seizures usually last a short time. If it is not the first time it has happened, your vet will most likely have prescribed some home treatment to apply however, if it is the first time it happens to them, it is best to wait until the seizure passes, as long as it does not last more than two minutes. If it lasts more than two minutes, you will pick up your animal, even if it is still in the middle of a seizure and go to the nearest emergency center. If it starts drooling a lot, you can gently place a towel, a absorbent pad or something under the area of the head that will help absorb the drool so that it does not accumulate in the mouth. Another important thing you can do is to put towels wrapped around the animal in case you do not have enough space so that it does not hit itself or hurt itself with anything. Especially in an epileptic seizure, your animal's personality may change. Do not go near the mouth area. Do not make sudden movements. Sometimes after an epileptic seizure, your animal may become aggressive. It's not because there's anything wrong with him at the moment. It's simply because he's suffered a very severe nervous attack and at that moment he doesn't know what he's doing or what's happening. So if the animal allows it, once the seizure has resolved, you can be close to him to reassure him and keep him calm. Really, try not to get nervous. I know I insist on this a lot, but it's the most important part. If your animal hasn't become aggressive, you'll still see that he's very nervous. It's very common for them to start pacing around the entire area of the room convulsively. So clear the space for them, and as soon as they're a little calmer, go to your vet immediately to see what's happened. Remember that an epileptic seizure can be caused by many things. It could be a cause that is outside of their head, such as low blood sugar due to an illness, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease poisoning, or it could be a cause that is inside their head. So in any case, it is very important for the vet to diagnose why this has happened to your furry friend. It is important to mention that sometimes the animal can warn, so to speak, that it is going to have an epileptic seizure. You may notice that your animal is suddenly different, looks for you excessively, hides around the house, starts to pace around, or is very nervous when they are already epileptic animals. The owners are used to it and already know when they are going to have a seizure. So if you suddenly notice your animal acting very differently from their usual behavior, be alert, because something could be wrong. So in case this happens, you already know how to stay calm at home. Try to get through the moment as calmly as possible with a cool head, and then go immediately to your emergency vet.
