Border Collies are the world's smartest dog breed. The video covers their history, physical traits, intelligence, behavior, training needs, health problems, and care requirements from an animal expert.
Hello and welcome to this new video from Animal Expert. Today we'll be talking about the Border Collie, one of the most popular and appreciated dog breeds in the world due to its great intelligence. Although the exact origin of the Border Collie is uncertain, we do know that it was developed and officially recognized in the British Isles. Archaeological remains found of this dog breed indicate that dogs may have given rise to the current Border Collie. They arrived in the British isles between the 5th and 1st centuries AD by the Celtic tribes. In fact, it is suspected that its name could come from the language of these communities since call means useful in Galician. Even at that time, it was used as a sheepdog to guide livestock, a job that it still does today. Due to its agility and intelligence, these tribes settled in Ireland. However, the Border Call that we know today was finally developed between Scotland and England and it was not until the 20th century that the different canine organizations began to officially recognize this breed. The Border Call is an easy dog to recognize due to its physical characteristics. This is a well proportioned dog with features that show its endurance and predisposition for work. It is slightly longer than it is tall. Its legs are muscular. Its aku is long and tapers towards the nose which is usually black or brown. Its eyes are usually brown, although some specimens have one or both blue. The ears can be drooping, semi drooping or completely erect. Regarding the type of hair, there are two varieties, the short haired Border Collie and the long haired Border Collie. In both cases, a double layer of hair is observed that protects them from the cold. The difference between them is only in the length of the hair. On the other hand, the Border Collie comes in a wide range of colors such as black and white, brown and white and black, white and tan. There are also specimens in blue, chocolate or Australian red. It is a very agile dog, an ideal physical shape for exercise, jumping and running. Males usually measure about 53 cm to the withers and females slightly less. It can weigh up to 20 kilogram. The border collie is number one on Stanley Corn's famous list, so it is considered the most intelligent dog in the world. In addition, it is a very active and energetic dog. Recommended for young people or adults who have the necessary time to give it the exercise it needs. With the right training, it can be a very obedient dog. Lack of time and dedication can turn the Border Collie into a destructive, hyperactive, anxious, nervous and even barking dog. The negative behaviors of this breed are usually the result of anxiety due to boredom or pent up energy. It is a very loyal dog to its human companions, affectionate and loving, although reserved with strangers. As it is a very active dog, it should go out three times a day, one hour each or four times 40 minutes. In addition, it is necessary to let the border collie exercise to release the accumulated energy through physical activities. It is also very important to stimulate it mentally. The border collie usually gets tired of doing the same exercises and following the same routine of orders. The result is a frustrated dog. For him, the most fun is learning without limits, pleasing his human companions and feeling fulfilled. On the other hand, both the long haired and short haired border collie should be brushed at least three times a week. Baths should be done every month and a half so that he does not lose his natural protective layer, as he is such an intelligent dog. It takes the border Collie an average of 5 exercises to learn a new command or trick, while the general average is between 30 and 40 repetitions. To obtain these results, it is essential to work with the dog using positive reinforcement and keeping him motivated at all times. Although he is usually a sociable breed, he must be properly socialized from a young age with other animals in new environments. From six months of age, you can start teaching him basic training commands and once they have been internalized, move on to advanced commands. Remember that the border collie needs to be kept mentally stimulated, so it is also recommended to practice skills and dog sports such as agility with him. Although the border collie is usually a healthy dog, it can develop depression if it does not receive the necessary care. On the other hand, it is susceptible to hereditary diseases such as coli, eye anomaly and other pathologies such as hip dysplasia, hip epilepsy or neuronal ceroid lipofustinosis. To prevent or detect the aforementioned diseases in time, it is very important to follow the visits scheduled by the veterinarian. Likewise, the mandatory vaccination schedule must be followed and the border collie must be dewormed both internally and externally. If you give your dog the carrot needs and follow our advice, you will enjoy a healthy and happy border collie between 12 and 17 years old. And that's it for today's video.
