This is a YouTube video titled "Border collie vs pastor australiano - DIFERENCIAS" created in October 2017, providing an expert explanation comparing the Border Collie and Australian Shepherd dog breeds. The content is a detailed monologue describing the origins, physical characteristics, temperament, care, and training differences between the two breeds, aimed at educating viewers about their distinctions and similarities.
When we think of sheepdogs, the image of a border collie herding a flock of sheep or an Australian shepherd automatically comes to mind. However, identifying these breeds can sometimes be a complicated task due to their many similarities. In this new video by an animal expert, we will show you the differences between the Border Collie and the Australian Shepherd. Let's get started. The origin of the Border Collie dates back to the 1st and 2nd centuries BC when Celtic tribes brought the dogs that acted as the ancestors of this breed to the British Isles. Even then, it was used as a herding dog, a task it continues to perform due to its intelligence and incredible working capacity. The origin of the Australian shepherd, on the other hand, is uncertain and there are several theories that support it. However, despite its name, they all agree that it was developed in the United states in the 19th century when a group of Basque migrants headed to America with the intention of trying their luck in sheep farming, and they took their sheepdogs with them after having previously spent some time in Australia. It is believed that the Australian shepherd is the result of crossing the Border Collie with other shepherd type dogs, this being one of the main differences between the Border Collie and the Australian shepherd, which are descended from the other. Although both dogs have very similar physical features such as long hair, they also have different characteristics that allow us to differentiate the Border Collie from the Australian shepherd. A clear example of this is the range of colors accepted for each of them. The Border Collie can be black, blue, merle, gray, spotted, red, merle, tricolor, merle, brown, red, Australian and sable. The Australian shepherd can be blue, merle, red, merle red, tricolor, tricolor, merle black and copper. In addition, the border Collie's coat is much denser and harsher than that of the Australian shepherd, which is softer. Likewise, the Australian Shepherd's head hair is slightly shorter than that of the Border collie. On the other hand, the Border Collie's ears can be erect or semi erect, while erect ears are considered a serious fault in the Australian shepherds. Although both dogs are medium sized, the Australian shepherd is slightly heavier and taller than the border collie. An average adult border Collie weighs around 20 kg and stands between 46 and 53 cm at the withers, while the Australian shepherd can weigh between 25 and 30 kg and stand between 46 and 58 cm. In both breeds, the female will usually be smaller than the male. There are not many differences between the Border collie and the Australian shepherd as both dogs are affectionate, happy, loyal, attentive, and active. This means that both breeds need to receive a good dose of daily exercise as well as activities that keep their minds entertained. In general, they do not usually adapt to small flats or apartments precisely because of their active nature. If we respect the character of each dog and cover all its needs, the border collie can live up to 17 years, while the life expectancy of the Australian shepherd is around 15 years. This being another difference between the two, basic care in terms of feeding, exercise, hygiene, vaccination and deworming are the same for both dogs. Here the difference between the border collie and the Australian shepherd lies in the care of the coat. While the Australian needs to be maintained with two weekly brushings and baths when really necessary, the border collie requires a more intense routine, the ideal being to brush its coat every day or every other day to make it shiny and silky. This is due to the difference in the layers that we mentioned earlier. Since the border collie's hair is coarser, it needs more care than the Australian shepherd to prevent it from becoming even coarser. On the other hand, although both dogs need daily exercise and play various games and activities to stay well stimulated, this fact is even more accentuated in the border collie. Since the border collie is considered the most intelligent dog in the world, according to Stanley Coren, training, it is relatively easy with the right techniques. In this way, many repetitions are not necessary for this dog to internalize an order or learn to carry out its herding tasks. The Australian shepherd, on the other hand, requires a little more time, although it does not usually present difficulties during its training. In both cases, the most recommended dog training techniques are those that carry out through positive reinforcement, since they manage to keep the dogs motivated and obtain better results, especially in the border collie. Due to its active nature and great intelligence, opting for negative reinforcement generates behavioral problems and health consequences such as stress, anxiety, disobedience, destruction, or aggression in the most serious cases. Likewise, and as we pointed out in the previous section, it is necessary to constantly teach new tricks and commands to the border collie to prevent it from getting bored and to keep its mind always active.
