Hello and welcome to this new Animal Expert video. Today we're going to talk about the German Short Haired Pointer, one of the most loyal and active breeds. I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you to download our new Animal Expert app. The German Shorthaired Pointer is a very popular breed in its place of origin, Germany. Its history is little known and very confusing. It is thought to have blood from the Spanish Pointer and the English Pointer as well as other hunting dog breeds, but its genealogy is not known with certainty. One document stands out in which Prince Albert of SS Brownfels in the 19th century established the characteristics of the breed, the rules for judging its morphology, and finally the basic rules for working tests for hunting dogs. The German Shorthaired Pointer is a tall, muscular and strong dog, well proportioned with dark brown eyes. Its scenting ability is exceptional and it also stands out for its great physical endurance. The coat is short, tight, rough and hard. It can be solid brown, brown with small white spots, brown roan white with a brown head, black or black roan. The height at the withers is around 62 and 66 centimeters in males and 58 and 66 centimeters in females. The weight of both sexes is between 25 and 30 kilograms. The hunting nature of this pointer defines its temperament. This is an active, lively, curious and intelligent dog that enjoys outdoor activities in the company of its loved ones. If there is a suitable place and enough time to keep these dogs, they can become excellent pets for dynamic people and families who enjoy outdoor activities. On the other hand, they are not usually good pets for sedentary people or families. When socialized from an early age, the German Short haired Pointer is a friendly dog both with strangers and with dogs and other animals. In these conditions it is usually very friendly and playful with children. On the other hand, if you are going to live with small pets and it is important to place great emphasis on their socialization from a young age since their hunting instincts can emerge if we neglect their needs for activity, socialization and stimulation. The brockoman can become a destructive or barking dog. Although the short haired brockoman sheds regularly, caring for their coat is simple and does not require much effort or time. Regular brushing every two or three days is enough to keep their coat in good condition and bathing them once every two months or when they are really dirty. These dogs need to be accompanied most of the day due to their sociable and playful personality, but they also need to be stimulated. It is essential to practice intelligence and sniffing exercises with them as well as a minimum of three walks a day combined with physical exercise. During their puppy stage, we will teach them the basics such as urinating on the newspaper and then urinating on the street. We will teach them to control their bite and we will constantly socialize them with other sociable dogs, people and animals in general. Although they are intelligent dogs that can be trained fairly easily, the German Shorthaired Pointer is a dog that tends to get distracted easily, so we recommend carrying out short sessions several times a day. Due to its excellent sense of smell, the pointer can become an excellent police dog, whether searching for lost people or dogs and detecting explosives or drugs. Among the most common diseases of the breed are hip dysplasia, entropion, gastric torsion and progressive retinal atrophy. It is also susceptible to lymphatic obstruction and ear infections. To detect these problems early and correctly follow its vaccination schedule, we recommend visiting the vet every six months or as often as he or she indicates. It will also be beneficial to continue deworming it both internally and externally. If we make an effort to offer it a good life, we can enjoy it for between 12 and 15 years.
