Cómo actuar si te encuentras un perro abandonado

What to do if you find an abandoned dog in Spain. The video covers legal requirements, safety steps, and how to report the animal to authorities. It also encourages adoption and reporting animal abuse.
The abandonment of domestic animals is a sad and regrettable phenomenon that occurs all over the world, and its main victims are dogs and cats, among other animals. In the last year alone, more than 138,000 animals were collected in Spain, in addition to all those already residing in kennels and shelters. Although Spain has tightened penalties to combat these practices with fines of up to €30,000, the truth is that they continue to occur today. We will explain how you should act if you find a lost or abandoned dog. Don't miss out. You could save a life. The first thing you should understand if you have found a lost or abandoned dog is that it will probably be very scared. You must take certain precautions and under no circumstances approach it in an invasive manner because if it has had any traumatic experience, it may react negatively and unpredictably. We will approach it calmly from the side, never from the front, while speaking to it in a soft and calm voice. We can tell it that it is a good boy or that it is very handsome. Words that you may have heard before and associate positively. We can let him sniff our hands or offer him food. In any case, the first thing to do is try to check him for an identification tag that may contain the contact details of his owners. If you do not see any tag, you can try to take the dog to a veterinary clinic as they are required to have their microchip read. If the dog does not have an identification chip, then you should contact the authorities. Where should you call to have an abandoned dog picked up? Many people tend to contact or go directly to an animal shelter to leave an abandoned dog or cat there. However, this is not the right way to proceed because depending on the area where it was abandoned, the animal will have to be handed over to one shelter or another. Since there are different numbers to call depending on the autonomous community, you can contact the emergency services directly on 112. We can keep an abandoned dog. In some autonomous communities in Spain, such as Catalonia or Madrid, the euthanasia of healthy animals is prohibited by law. However, in other communities, euthanasia is a common practice in shelters and kennels, which is why many people consider adopting abandoned animals that they find. However, according to the law, it is the city council or animal welfare associations that are responsible for collecting or donating dogs that are lost or abandoned by their owners. It also establishes that these administrations must have a 24 hour collection service and veterinary care. What should we do if we witness a case of abandonment? In Spain, for example, abandoning an animal is prohibited by law according to the animal Protection and Welfare Code. In fact, abandonment is considered a very serious offense that can result in a fine of between €2,000 and €30,000. In addition, if the abandonment involves a potentially dangerous dog, or if it is a repeat offense, the fine is increased. If you see someone abandoning an animal, whether it's a dog, cat or any other companion animal, you should immediately contact the relevant authorities trying to provide as many details as possible about the case in order to identify the culprit. You can write down the vehicle's license plate, the individual's details, and even take a photo or video of the incident in order to provide the necessary evidence. Once again, we advise you to contact the emergency services directly at Animal Expert. We want to express our absolute rejection of animal abandonment. For this reason, we we encourage you to adopt instead of buying as well as report any case of animal abuse that you witness. Remember that they have no voice you act on their behalf.
