Today on Animal Expert, we analyze what several studies have to say about the relationship between cats and humans and we give you some advice on how to create a bond with your cat. Pay attention and take notes. The Bond between People and Cats the data we have today reveals that cats are far from detached or unfriendly animals, as anyone who has lived with one or more of them will confirm, and that they can establish very diverse bonds with humans. A study published in 2021 by scientists from the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom defined three main types of relationships that can be established between cats and people based on, among other things, the behavior displayed by the felines and the emotional involvement of their human guard. 1. Open relationship According to this research, approximately a quarter of people who live with one or more cats have an open relationship, that is they care about their well being but offer a lot of freedom to the animal, allowing it in most cases access to the outside of the home. Cats that have this type of relationship with their guardians tend to be quite curious, sociable with strangers and and affectionate with their family members, although they do not show themselves to be overly attached to them. 2. Low emotional involvement on the other hand, another quarter of the population seems to have low emotional involvement with respect to caring for their cat or cats. These guardians invest little time playing or relating to their animals which, although they tend to be friendly towards them, are very independent and do not actively seek proximity or physical contact with humans. If this is your case and you want to strengthen the bond with your cat, do not miss the video that we have left for you above. 3. Codependency finally, almost half of the cat guardians who participated in this study demonstrated a codependent relationship with their furry friends, becoming very emotionally involved with them and spending most of the day with them. These cats display many affiliative behaviors towards their guardians. They are more distrustful of strangers and are more likely to suffer from stress or anxiety related to separation and loneliness. Find out if your cat has hyper attachment and how to help them gain autonomy and self confidence in the video we have included in the card. How to Create a Bond with my Cat as you have seen, the relationship that is created between a cat and its owner depends on several factors among which the level of involvement of the human stands out, their way of behaving with the animal and the time and effort invested in their education and care, as well as the character of the cat, its genetic heritage and its previous experiences. If you want to create a good bond with your cat, the first thing you should do is inform yourself well about what their physical and psychological needs are, what care they need, and what their past has been like. The answers to these and many other questions will lay the foundation for a good relationship. Once this is done, it is time to start building a positive bond with your furry friend. If the caregiver is involved in the cat's well being, understands and respects its language, meets all its physical, emotional and social needs, provides it with security, and spends quality time with it, the cat will most likely develop a secure attachment to the guardian, enjoy their company, and lean on them when they feel insecure. However, if the caregiver punishes or intimidates the cat, I isolates it, overprotects it, or does not respect its signals, the animal will most likely develop an insecure type of attachment, become anxious about social interactions, and suffer from health and behavioral problems.
