¿Cómo evitar el abandono de animales? ¡Tenemos que actuar!

Carlos, a clinical veterinarian, explains why animals get abandoned, especially in summer, and what pet owners can do to prevent it. He covers the real costs of pet ownership, the consequences of abandonment, and why adoption matters more than buying.
These people are capable of justifying this behavior to you without any shame. Although perhaps for show, what they end up telling you is that abandoning animals is wrong. What they really end up doing is getting rid of them. And believe me, I've experienced this many times. Hello, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. Summer is a time of year that we love. The days are longer, your you can do things outside the house, and we usually have vacations. However, animal abandonment also increases at this time of year. Well, yes, because at this time of year, two factors come together. The first is that families who were given a pet for Christmas no longer think it's such a good idea because it takes up their time, space and money. And the second factor is because there are many other people who think that the pet no longer fits into their life plans and the holidays are the perfect excuse to abandon them. It's unfortunate that we have to keep talking about these issues year after year. And if a few weeks ago we showed you the hunting dog, eventually no Longer Afraid, which was precisely about the abandonment of these breeds, there is another part of society that, although it may seem very animalistic to you and that loves their pets very much just because they have them, the truth is that they are not so different from those creators of hunting dogs. And why am I telling you all this? Well, look, it turns out that there is data that says that in Spain up to 17 animals are abandoned every hour. This is outrageous. And that is why on this channel, we are completely convinced that we want to do our bit to raise awareness in society to help stop this problem from happening. On the other hand, the abandonment of animals, especially dogs, usually occurs in unsafe environments such as roads, service areas and gas stations. In these places, abusers can better camouflage themselves among other people and can leave the animal there at any given time and easily leave. But being close to cars and traffic, what ends up happening is that the abandoned animals can end up badly injured or even run over on the road. This reality is much more dramatic in cats because they usually form very large colonies in cities where abandoned animals gradually join. In addition, there is a horrible custom with small kittens. People who have litters that they don't want put the small kittens in plastic bags. They take these plastic bags to the dumpster and leave them inside, hoping that when the garbage truck comes by and empties the dumpster inside, the cats will be crushed and thus they will get rid of the problem. The truth is that it gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. But there are many, many cases that I have heard of where they have rescued kittens in these circumstances. Last week, for example, a friend of mine rescued a litter of kittens from inside a dumpster that had just been thrown away and she found one of the kittens with a broken leg which she assumed had been fractured when it fell into the dumpster. In these situations, we must raise our voices to denounce what is happening and ensure that these attitudes are increasingly prosecuted and punished. Today we want to tell you what you can do to prevent abandonment. Because although we know that you who are watching our videos will never abandon an animal, you can help us spread this message to help raise social awareness. What I am going to tell you next is especially aimed at all those people who are considering joining their lives with a dog or a cat for the first time and who have not yet experienced it. You may not be aware of what it really entails. And of course at this point there may be many unknown questions that I am going to try to answer for you. If on the other hand, you are you are someone who already lives with a pet and has experience with animals at home, what I am about to share with you could help guide someone in your environment who is considering this possibility but is not entirely sure about it. This is essential to prevent cases of abandonment in the future. First and foremost, and although it may seem most obvious, you say you want a pet, but you really want one. My question may seem silly to you, but before getting a pet, think about it and see if you can afford to keep it. Right now, everything may seem idyllic, but a pet is not a toy and I will never tire of repeating this. Everything may be going great for you right now and your situation may allow you to have a dog or a cat. But simply consider what if you lose your job or break up with your partner or have to move to the other side of the world? Are you willing to keep your pet in all of these situations? Are you sure that it will never be a hindrance to you? If you hesitate for half a second to answer any of these three questions, then discard the idea of having a pet. You cannot make a decision like this lightly because you are going to be bonded to another living being that in the best case scenario will live with you for more than 10 years, okay, yes, of course you want to have one, but good intentions are not the only thing that can happen. You have to think about whether you can afford their food, veterinary expenses and care. And this is the most important thing because their well being depends on it. I always recommend, even though no one ever listens to me, that you save up a piggy bank for unforeseen events that may arise with your pet. That way, when you have to resort to an extra expense, you will always have the money available and your little one will not want for anything. In general, the expenses of having an animal are high. And believe me, I know what I'm talking about. Because apart from their vaccines, food and normal care, there are always small, unforeseen events that can make you spend a large amount of money. Such as, for example, an accident, a broken leg, or a chronic illness that you have to treat for a long time. I don't want to be a party pooper or a prophet of doom. I just want you to think about it and be realistic. Because chronic illnesses that animals suffer from are another major cause of abandonment. And if, after thinking about all this, you realize that you are 100% sure that you want to have a pet and that you are going to be with it for the rest of its life, go ahead. But first I recommend that you get in touch with a local shelter or animal welfare association so that you can understand what it's like to have a pet and get in touch with it. For example, you can act as a foster home and have pets in your home for a while that need to be rescued or have undergone surgery like under which we showed you in another video last week. You can also collaborate with shelters to walk dogs and get them out of their routine of being confined to smaller areas and at least have them spend some quality time with you. This way you will realize if you connect with the dog or cat that you take in and you will know if you are ready to have a pet. On this channel, you have met many volunteers who collaborate with animal welfare associations and who do an impressive job. That is why I recommend that you follow their example. This way you will get to know yourself better and you will do a lot of good for animals that really need it. Well, if we have reached this point, it is because you have already passed all the previous tests. Yes, this is like the 12 tests of asterix. A new member is about to join your family. But of course, and I think I don't even need to tell you this. Always adopt and never buy. No one would ever think of buying a son or a daughter. Come on. I hope so. Let's put frivolity aside and start the new relationship that we are going to establish with our furry Friend on the right foot. If you want to have the company of a living being, you shouldn't care about their brand. You should love them for who they are. Breeds are, after all, brands, labels, right? And there are many animals that are eager to find a home where they are loved. It is within your reach to be able to help these animals. Buying animals is not doing them any favors and is only benefiting those mafias that are in charge of sexually exploiting mothers so that they can give them offspring which give them economic benefit in a cycle that never ends until they are no longer useful to them and then they discard them. The only way to end this business is to always adopt and never buy any animals. In any case, a vacation is never an excuse to abandon an animal. It is clear that you are not going to go 10, 15 or 20 years without taking a vacation. But there are ways to enjoy them and your dog and cat do not suffer the consequences. Such as dog boarding kennels or private homes that take your animals while you go on vacation. For example, there are also pet walking services where you can have your dog, for example, in your garden and they will come and walk it and take care of it while you are away. Or there are also hotels and hostels that let you go with your pets. If you are looking for a vacation, look for a hotel that allows you to take your pets. If you can't find one, there are other alternatives, but you should never abandon them. I understand that in addition to everything I'm telling you about abandoning them during vacations, many circumstances may arise in your life, such as losing your job, but this is not an excuse to abandon your dog or cat. You can count on your family and friends to lend a hand and also allow you to continue seeing your canine or feline companion to whom you mean everything. If you want, you can. There is no excuse that can justify abandoning them, much less going on vacation. There is always a solution to the problems that may arise in your day to day life. Personally, I believe that if you are one of those people who truly loves animals, you will never abandon your dog or cat, leave them on the street, or euthanize them or anything like that. Unfortunately, what it shows me is that this type of behavior occurs in people who had decided to join their lives with their dog or cat simply because at that time they felt like it. Not because they really felt they needed the company of an animal, but who got bored of them and began to see them as a nuisance. And now any excuse seems good enough to them to be able to separate from them. These people are capable of justifying this behavior without any shame. Although perhaps for show, what they end up telling you is that abandoning animals is wrong. When they think they can no longer take care of their pet, what they really end up doing is getting rid of them. And believe me, I have experienced this many times because there are many cases where the animal has, for whatever reason, an accident or is predisposed to a herniated disc. And we have been telling them this all their lives and suddenly it happens to them and they have to face a very significant expense. And at that moment, well, they don't love them as much anymore. They don't even think about abandoning it, but instead come straight to your office and tell you that they want to put it to sleep. Abandoning an animal and wanting to put it to sleep at the first opportunity is to me, indolence. Because not having enough financial resources doesn't mean that you can't turn to family, friends, or even a bank loan that can help you pay for the operation your animal needs and avoid something as drastic as having having to put your pet to sleep. What I want is for you to be honest with yourself and consider whether you really want to share your life with that pet. In health, in sickness, in sadness and in poverty. I don't even know about the votes, but don't let divorces count. If you make a good decision at this point, you will avoid contributing to more cases of animal suffering in the future. Not everyone is prepared to live with a dog or a cat. We must think about our limitations and whether or not we can be the best companion that these animals deserve. If you have decided that you can, congratulations. I hope you are very happy with your little one. And if you've decided not to, thank you very much. You're giving him the opportunity to live with another family who is currently prepared to take him into their home. And please, if during these vacation days when you're traveling with your family by road, you see any situation of abandonment or mistreatment, what you have to do is contact the authorities or also animal protection associations. If you see an abandoned animal on the road or at a gas station or service station, the first thing you have to do is report it to these organizations so that the life of the animal itself or the lives of drivers who are traveling on the road are not put at risk. And finally, the last thing I want to ask you to please do is to pass this message on to as many people as possible, because it is in our hands to be able to raise awareness in society and put an end to this problem. And that's it for today's video. If you liked it, give it a like and share it with your family and friends. If we manage to reach enough people, we may reach a point where this problem stops being news. Subscribe to the channel if you haven't already, and hit the bell. So YouTube will notify you every time we upload new content. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel. And I'll see you in the next video. And enjoy the summer with your pet. Yeah. And what was the other thing? Oh, okay. But before that. They all land on me. I don't know. I must fly to hell. I can't say that while laughing at the service. No, as I said. And there are gas stations. Don't laugh. Flies. What do they go for? Sweets or. I've lost their empathy for. I mean, well, I don't know how to say it. Well, then I fly. Sweets or I fly to ellipsis. Okay, thanks. No, let's remove this because it's boring. Well, how do I say it then? Okay, okay. Well then how do I say it? And enjoy the summer when, my friend, I seem like a partisan. I don't know how you want me to say it. I just said it. Okay? At this point, my only recommendation is that you adopt and never buy animals. I don't like it.
