Carlos, a veterinarian, explains why cats shed heavily during molting season and shares practical solutions. He covers grooming techniques, nutrition supplements, and environmental changes to reduce the hair around your home.
Is it normal for cats to shed their hair? What should you do during shedding season? If you've ever wondered this, this video is for you. And if you haven't, well, you'll also wonder because you live with a cat and these things are basic. And if you're watching the video without living with a cat or a dog, leave me a comment, because I sometimes get those types of comments and it makes me very happy. Hello, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. First of all, cats shed their hair. What a discovery I've just made for you. You've probably already noticed when you hold them in your arms that their coat looks like the snowman. The snowman. Hey, why do cats, even if they're black, also have white hair when you see it on their clothes? Well, I don't know. The thing is that there are some periods of time that are called shedding seasons in which the cat loses much more hair. But do you know what triggers cat shedding? Well, it's very simple. The hours of light outside and also the temperature. This shedding generally occurs at two times of the year. The first is in spring, which is especially intense and can last until summer. And the other time is in autumn. As I said, spring shedding is more intense because they have to shed all that hair that has kept them warm during the winter. Right. And this is a theory that is very good. Although cats that live with us in our homes do not have such big temperature changes, they are still influenced by light, of course, but they do not shed as much in spring and autumn. What happens with cats that live with us is not that they never shed their hair, but. But that shedding occurs throughout the year in cycles of approximately four and a half weeks. But you may still see that it increases a little more in spring and autumn. And in countries that don't have seasons.
Well, in countries that don't have seasons, shedding usually occurs throughout the year. As I said, more or less continuously. Now, is it a problem if a cat sheds its hair? Well, as I'm saying, generally speaking, no. But I'm referring to hair loss in a more or less uniform way. If you see that the cat is losing a lot of hair for a very long time and it falls out unevenly, well, that could indicate a problem. In other words, you have to observe it a little. And if it's not a problem, then why am I making the video? Well, because you asked me, but because there are also a series of tips. A Series of little tricks that you can apply at home with your cat to help them during shedding seasons, to prevent them from swallowing a lot of hair during these times and developing a problem with obstructions, for example with hairballs, but also to prevent them from shedding so much. Well, let's get to the tips, inside the tips. First, make sure your cat eats well during these days. What does that have to do with it? Well, because cats that are well nourished have fewer problems with hair loss. But your cats are already well nourished. They eat well all year round. Well, for these times during shedding seasons, you can give them a small supplement, an extra dose of nutrition that helps them have healthier skin. For example, those that are formulated with fatty acids that help their hair to be much stronger, much prettier and shinier. What I usually recommend are capsules, for example, that come with fish oils, which help to improve the layer of fat that covers the skin and also to keep the hair much healthier. And how do you give this? You tell me. Well, normally you don't have any problems because as I said, they are generally made from fish oils, so the cat usually likes them. But the capsules that I usually recommend are usually soft. So you can open them on top of your cat's food and put it on. You just open it so that the food soaks up and your cat eats it happily. It's not like giving it a pill, let's say. And if you don't have this supplement on hand, which is already formulated specifically for cats, you can go to the herbalists and buy salmon oil, which is normally sold in these types of stores, and add a little bit, but I'm referring to a little bit more or less a teaspoon, more or less. Two or three times a week at most, right? That if you overdo it, cats gain weight, because after all, that's fat. There are other tricks that have nothing to do with supplements. Let's get to them now. 2. On those days, make your cat feel a bit like Rapunzel taking care of her long hair. It's very important that during shedding seasons, you increase the number of times you brush your cat. You can brush her with specific brushes for those seasons that remove all the dead hair that your cat has on her. That way we're going to kill two birds with one stone. Your cat isn't going to leave the whole house looking like a wild one, or this one with hairballs. And to continue grooming your cat, she's not going to swallow all that Dead hair that could cause obstructions due to hairballs. But I also want to tell you you don't have to use these specific brushes for shedding seasons every day because some people are very stubborn and in the end the poor cats end up with, well, totally scratched skin. Well, instead you'll need to use them once or twice a week at most. And if your cat also tends to shed a lot of hair, what you'll need to do is brush it every day with softer brushes. 3. And during those times, give it a little fiber. Well, I told you before that I was only going to talk to you about fish oil supplements. In this case, I not referring to giving it fiber in the form of malt. You know that I don't usually get along very well with malts because many of them don't have a good formulation. Look, I'm going to leave you the video about malts here so that you know how to tell them apart. I do recommend that during those times you give it access to typical cat grass or catnip, which helps it eat a little more plant material with fiber and eliminate those hairballs. That way we avoid them having problems. The cat grass I'm referring to is sold in the supermarket, but sometimes you've asked me how you can make it at home, or if you don't have it in your supermarket, how can you do it? You can go to a seed store and there you can buy canary seed, oat seed or barley seed. These are usually seeds that grow very quickly. You can sow them and by the end of the week they'll be ready for your cat to harvest. And four, a little trick to keep their environment much better. I'll explain. Now, don't turn the heating on too high in the fall. When fall starts, some people may feel a bit cold and turn the heating on really hard. What can happen at that time? Well, our cats also get a bit cold and they end up sleeping on top of the radiator. Then their body begins to interpret it as not that the cold is coming, but that is it is not that winter is coming, but that spring and summer are arriving. Then your cat's body can get confused, so to speak, and begin to shed more like spring, which, as I said, are much more intense. So what should you do? Turn on the heating. Well, turn it down a bit at the beginning and then as winter approaches. But don't overdo it at the beginning, because then it is more likely to start a very intense shed in the fall when it is not supposed to. I hope These tips will help you, well, cope a little better with your cat's shedding season. But at the end of the day, I have to tell you that, oh, surprise. You live with a cat and you have to put up with its hair for a while. So we can't ask our feline companions not to shed because they live in our homes. Please, we have to be a little consistent. And you let me know in the comments below if your cats have problems during shedding seasons, if they lose a lot of hair, or if you also have any advice that we haven't given in this video. Hey, that could also be useful to all of us. And that's it for today's video. If you liked it, give it a like and share it with everyone. Remember to subscribe to our channel if you haven't already. Much better, right? What? What? Sheds in the ones that are not during the shedding season. You didn't say that, right? Oh, of course. And they come back again. That's why the little gesture.
