Hi, I'm Adrian Conde, a veterinarian, and in this video we're going to talk to you about the barf diet for cats. If you have a cat at home and want to try this type of diet or are ever interested in it, stay tuned because you're going to learn a lot. First of all, it's important to define what a cat is and what a strict carnivore is, which is why this type of well prepared and well balanced diet is a very interesting option. What does a barf diet dish for cats consist of? Well, it. It has several components such as meat and fish, meaty bones, viscera and vegetables, which may be optional. What benefits can this type of diet provide, especially for our cat? Well, greater vitality, better hair quality, fewer urinary problems because it is more hydrated with food compared to dry food or kibble. Fewer dental problems because there is less tartar and other benefits that you may notice in your animal. First of all, it's important to define the total amount of food our cat will have to eat. To find out these grams, we are going to use percentages between 3% and 5% multiplied by our cat's live weight. We are going to use 3% for those animals that are sedentary, neutered, and 5% for those cats that have access to the outdoors or that are very active. Once we have defined the total amount of grams, we are going to talk about the percentages of food on the plate. It will consist of 50% meat or fish, 20% meaty bones, 20% heart, and 10% offal, where there will be 5% liver and 5% other offal that we are going to rotate. As we have mentioned, cats are strict carnivores, so vegetables are optional in their diet. If we want to include them, it will have to be 5%. Examples of meats that we can use are chicken, turkey, rabbit, chicken, giblets. Examples of meaty bones suitable for cats include quail, rabbit, ribs, wingtips and vegetables such as zucchini, squash and many more. If we are going to include them, all we have to do is make sure they are not those that are prohibited or toxic to our pets. Something very important to keep in mind when talking about natural feeding and specifically the barb diet, is that we have to rotate the foods. In other words, we cannot always give them the same type of meat or the same type of meaty bone or offal, because in order to achieve balance, we have to rotate the ingredients. If you have a problem or are afraid of giving whole foods, we can always choose to grind the meaty bones, meat and all of them and give them in a ground format. This will not cause a problem with tartar since there are not many carbohydrates in the ration and therefore it will not cause plaque and tartar in our pets. It is very important to keep in mind that cats need taurine because they are not able to synthesize it with raw foods. Taurine is present in the food as it is lost during cooking. However, it is very important that any liquid that may come out when defrosting food is not thrown away but rather included in their ration. In some specific animals it may be necessary to supplement taurine to ensure the right dose, but as I said, if we are able to rotate foods over time, in principle there is no problem. Some things that we should include in addition to this variety of ingredients are eggs, which in the case of cats will be one chicken egg per week or two quail eggs. We can also include probiotics and prebiotics in their diet for good intestinal function. And above all it is very important that if you have any questions you go to a professional to help you and avoid any problems. An example of a dish could 45% turkey meat, 20% chicken wings, 10% scallops where we would use veal kidney, 5% chicken liver, 20% chicken hearts and we could optionally add 5% grated zucchini. I hope you like the video and found it useful.
