Step-by-step guide to setting up a corn snake terrarium. Covers choosing the right tank size, heating and lighting systems, decorations, and how to maintain the habitat so your snake stays healthy.
Foreign. Hi, everyone. Let's move on to setting up this terrarium for a corn snake. It's a simple terrarium and I'd like to ask you, did you know why they're called corn snakes? It's generally said about this species that the patterns on their skin reflect the colors of the different grains of corn. But there's another very valid theory that these little animals live near these large cornfields. Why? Because they get small mice that are ultimately their food source. As you can see, I've opted for a complete solution, a kit. As you know, there are different versions for making a terrarium. I usually always opt for a kit because you get everything at a much more attractive price. In this case, I've opted for the kit that Exoterra has for this type of snake. Corn snakes terrariums need to be more elongated than tall. Why? Because these are snakes that don't live in trees, but rather in flat areas. This is a terrarium that will be good for the next five to 10 years. Because of these snakes, even if they grow, they can live here for this period of time without any problems. When you go for a terrarium, whatever it may be, make sure it has an easy closing mechanism and that it is completely closed and has plenty of ventilation. Like all terrariums, plenty of ventilation is recommended. In addition, I am going to add some dry leaves, some branches that I have, a thermometer and a hydrometer to control both temperature and humidity. One of the first things you had to do when you are going to build a terrarium. In this case, it is a very simple terrarium, is to check that all the glass is fine, that everything is in perfect order. I was able to disassemble this part, which is what would be the bottom. One of the things it has, look, it has this slot here that would be useful if you wanted to run cables. In this case, we will also have to take into consideration that I am going to set up this terrarium here to make it much easier so that everyone can see all the devices and all the little pieces that need to be placed, although there are not many, but I think this does not allow them. Where should a terrarium be placed? Ideally, it should be located in an area where there are no sudden changes in temperature. Do not place it next to a radiator or next to an air conditioner. This will not suit it. Also, do not place it in front of glass because this can only cause the temperature to rise too much and the animal to become stressed and suffer. There are issues that you have to take into consideration with snakes. Yes or yes? Pay attention. I have been repeating them. They need heat sources. In this case, I am going to test how it works. With the electric blanket that comes with this terrarium. We are going to install this device. It is powered from the outside. Later I will show you how to assemble it. I always recommend that you read all the instruction manuals for all devices. This helps us to place them correctly in the terrariums. I've told you, and I'll tell you again in this video, they need a warm zone and a cold zone. A warm zone and a cold zone. In this case, we will place the blanket to provide heat and if necessary, we can introduce a thermal stone that increases the temperature to about 25 or 26 grams. Another issue for snakes, unlike bearded dragons, I don't know if you remember, these animals do not need a large amount of VA and VB rays. We can basically place a screen like this with a light bulb. This would be a very simple light bulb. It has a low VB input. What will help us more is to see the animal than for any input for the snake. One issue I have, as you remember, is that I have a cat that is super mischievous. So my intention is to place the terrarium, as you can see, in that space that I have there. So I'm going to place this lamp and see how the cat behaves. If not, don't worry, I have a lamp from a previous terrarium that will fulfill the same function. I insist the lighting will be more for the appearance so that I can see what is happening with my snake. Let's move on to an important step. The correct placement of what would be the heating mat or thermal blanket. Here we have it. As you can see, there is an area that is the cold zone which is not affected by the blanket. And the area where we are going to place the blanket. You may wonder when you get to this point, what are these plugs for? These plugs were developed for terrariums that were completely flat. But since this is not the case, and as you can see here, there is this elevation, we are not going to need them. Another thing that you have to take into consideration is that you have to clean this surface very, very, very well. Why? Because this thermal blanket that you see here is like a sticker. So the surface has to be perfectly placed. I've put. I've left, excuse me, a working margin and especially in the back, it's a little wider. This is where we're basically going to place the background And I don't want to heat the background. I want the heat to concentrate in the central area. Let's go with it. It's that simple. Look, perfectly clean. I'm going to place this and I would square it here. It's like putting on a sticker. And this would be the part of the heating device. Remember that we're using a thermal blanket. I've already turned the terrarium over. As you can see, this side is the heating blanket, the hot area of the terrarium. The other area is what we call the cold area. I'm going to use this artificial carpet or felt that works very well for this type of snake. I'm telling you there are different options. Some people like to have them with substrates, such as coconut substrate. Others have them with corn substrate. After many years, I have realized that the best thing for this type of snake is to have something that is easy to wash, easy to replace. And above all, the advantage that this one offers me is that it also keeps the heat in, which is very useful in the winter. Well stretched, well spread out. I have placed it well. Remember that this is important. It will have to be replaced once or less every year. But you will have to clean it very regularly. Let's place what would be the bottom? Bottom. Let's place it carefully. Note that there is always a margin. Here it is, in case we need to put a device inside the terrarium. Later we could run the cables and there would be no problem. These terrariums are really well thought out. Perfect. Here we have it. Now it's time to place the cave. As I said, this type of snake likes to live inside a cave. Let's place it in this arrangement. If you recall, the warm zone, half of the cave will be in a warm zone and the other half in a cold zone so that she can decide where she wants to be. Now we are going to add decorative elements. This type of decorative element is important. Yes, it is quite important. As I mentioned in the previous video, normally when they are going to shed their skin, they need to get a surface that is rough so that they can remove the old shedding. That is why this type of decoration is interesting. I am also going to add some leaves as decorative elements so that if she can go out and be very comfortable, it also breaks the aesthetic part a little. Here is an interesting topic. A very important water bowl. Always water bowls in the cold zone. We are going to place it more or less here. And we are going to place this like this. Well, here we would have what would be the decorative part, as you can see, the terrarium is very easy to place. Now I would only have to place the lid. But before placing the lid, one of the most important devices, which is basically the thermometer, look, it's very easy to install, basically, since it has all these holes here, I was able to take it out here. This is basically the probe and we have a thermometer that has a probe that works very well. I put it inside the house so that I know what the temperature is in the cave and in the warm area. This is interesting. I'm going to put a second thermometer and hydrometer in the cold area to always have the best temperature monitor for the terrarium. And finally, I'm going to put this hydrometer, which is analog, on one side. That way I have all the measurements of the small ecosystem and I can know how my little snake is doing. And now, one of the most important elements of a terrarium, especially if this terrarium is going to have a small snake or a large snake, which is the lid. Look, Exoterra in this case, has a lid that is magnificent. It allows us to close the cables on one side and that it can't escape through any place. It has these clips. The lid allows for very good ventilation. Remember that one of the most important aspects of a terrarium is always ventilation. It has very good ventilation here. In the end, seeing the measurements, I had to abort the mission of using this rack that would come here with the original lighting. Why? Because it doesn't fit where I want the terrarium to be. I had to pull out a screen that I already had from another terrarium, which is basically where I'm going to place the light bulb. Remember that the lighting here is more for really seeing how the animal is. I'm going to place this light bulb without any problem. It's going to be placed in the warm zone so that if the snake wants to come out and is in the cold zone, it can be comfortable. And if it wants to be in the warm zone, no problem. The habitat is now in place so that we can put this little one inside for the first time. Remember, we've placed the thermometers, we've placed the electric blanket. Do you see the lighting system? It's a rather dim lighting system. It's perfect for this type of snake. Uh, all that's left is to go in. We've put in water, which is something that's very necessary whenever we have snakes. They need to have a source of water. They like to drink water. I'm going to put some in there. They'll gradually get to know their little territory. And I invite you to write me a comment. If you're interested in new snakes, how to care for snakes, or as we said at the beginning videos. We have all these products in our physical Equivico stores. You can go look for them there and we'll advise you on which terrarium is best for you.
