Foreign Hi, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. Let me be very clear. Cats tend to be overweight. Up to half of the cats that live with this may be a little overweight, and this negatively affects their health, as you've heard me say millions of times. The problem is that we often try to reduce our cat's weight solely through diet. And that's where failure comes in. That's why today I'm going to tell you how to make your cat lose weight with a foolproof method. The key to your cat losing weight is based on three fundamental diet, exercise and environmental enrichment. And we're going to go through them one by one. Let's start with the fundamental one, which is diet. And it's the most important because it's where we tend to make the biggest mistakes. First, I'm going to ask you a question so that you can do a little soul searching and detect where we're failing. How many people does your cat live with? This is very important because the more members there are in the family, the more people need to be involved in weight loss. It's no use doing everything yourself and then, for example, your child sneaking food to your cat. Above all, we need to focus on the people who spend the most time with the cat because it's much more likely that the cat will engage in a bit of emotional blackmail and ask for more food from those people, and that we who are not made of stone will end up giving it some. For example, a 5 kg cat needs approximately 250 calories a day to eat enough and not gain weight. However, if we give that cat a cube of cheddar cheese as a treat, that cube is providing it with about 30% of the calories it needs per day. It's like you eating a double hamburger all by yourself. That's why every little bit we give our cat to eat counts. I don't care if it's their food. If some people give them a little milk, although I'm not very much in favor of it, or if they give them a slice of ham, it all adds up. And that's why it's so important that we never go over what our cat is supposed to eat. And this links to the next question. How much food do you give your cat throughout the day? As I said, if you do it by guesswork, it's going to be bad. I recommend that you use a scale. You don't have to use the scale every day. You can use A jar or glass bottle where you put your cat's allotted amount of food for a day. You do have to weigh that one and you can make a mark on the jar with a marker. Now, you know that this is the amount your cat is supposed to eat per day. Then all you have to do is divide it by the number of feedings. To show you how important this is, I'm going to give you an example. A cat weighing around 4kg that eats around 10 more calories per day than it should, around 10 or 12 more Kibbles can gain around half a kilo of fat over the course of a year. So please take this very seriously. To keep our cat at its normal weight, what we should always do is stick to the food dosage chart that comes with each bag of dry food, care kibbles or balanced food for our cats. But we are making a video for fat cats, so let's see how we can correct the diet if we are overdoing it. Not long ago on the channel, I told you what the ideal weight your cat should have throughout its life is, depending on whether it is male or female. If you haven't seen it, I recommend that you take a look and I'll leave a link to it below. In that video, I explained how to use the body condition scale for our cat. It consists of looking at and patting your cat. I know this isn't a cat, but it'll help. In a cat that's at its ideal weight, we'll be able to feel its bones more or less easily, even though they're not very sharp. What's more, if we feel the ribs, we'll notice a little bit of fat on top. Also, if we look at our feline companion from above, we'll be able to clearly identify the hip line. And if we look at it from the side, we'll be able to see that the abdomen is a little tucked up. Your cat's ribs may be visible even if it's at a normal weight, although in most cats we can't see them because they're covered by hair. Cats with an ideal weight are given a score of five in the flame classification, and cats that are chubby will have a higher score up to nine, which is the maximum. In these cats, we won't see the hip line. We'll see that their belly is much more droopy. And if we feel their body, we'll be able to clearly identify the fat. However, in cats that are very thin or excessively thin, the opposite will happen. Their hips will be very, very visible from above. If we touch them, we will find very, very pointed bones and the ribs will be visible in any situation, because even if the hair is on top of, since they have no fat, it will form the shape of the ribs and so they will be visible to the naked eye. These very thin cats will receive a score of 1, 2 or 3. Each point that our cat goes up above the normal level, which is the BCC, means that it is 10% more than it should be. I will give you an example so that you know more or less how you have to go about it. A cat that weighs 5kg and that is at level 7 on the scale is more or less 20% overweight. That is why it has 1.2kg extra. In other words, to be a healthy weight for that cat, it would have to weigh approximately 3.8 kilogram. Before continuing, note this information. Any cat should consume between 50 and 60 calories per kilo of weight to reach its ideal weight. So in this example, if we multiply its ideal weight by 3.8 calories, it gives us between 190 and 228 calories. Well, this applies to a cat that is at its ideal weight. Ours is chubby and we want to get it to that weight. That's why what we have to do is give it between 60 and 70% of the calories it needs each day so that it has fewer calories than it requires and gradually loses weight. The calories that our cat would need to consume in this example, which weighs 5 kg and we want it to lose to 3.8 would be between 123.5 and 148 calories per day. But of course, this doesn't mean absolutely anything because we don't know exactly how much food those calories are. That's why we have to look at the bag of food Feed Care Kibble to find the information on how many calories 100 grams of feed have. What I'm going to tell you is a real example of a brand that gives 472kcalories for every 120 grams. In our example, when we were reducing the weight of a 5kg cat to 3.8, if we have to give it 123kcalories, we multiply the number of calories our cat would need to lose weight by the grams of feed. In this case 123. 120. And we would divide it by the number of calories provided by the feed. In this case 472 kcalories per 120 grams, which gives a total of 37.6 grams per day for our cat. That's it. It's more or less a handful, but logically, you have to weigh it. Of course, this is the food that you have to give your cat throughout the day. Nothing more than this. No treats, no sweets, no canned food. If you give him more, you have to remove these 37.6 grams because otherwise our cat will not lose weight. Well, logically, making such a large reduction in a very short time will not please our cat at all. That is why I recommend that you start reducing little by little and approximately 5 grams per week of what you are initially giving him until you reach the amount that corresponds to your cat. I tell you that this is a process that will take time, but it is very important that you are very methodical and that you always take the right steps. Once we reach this amount of food, we will have to make sure that our cat is losing weight. And that is why I recommend that you weigh him from that moment on. And until when are we going to give him this amount of food? Well, until the cat has reached its ideal weight. In the example I have given you, it would be 3.8 kilogram. The process, as I am saying, is quite slow. Normally it will take a cat about six months to lose between 10 and 15% of its body weight. In our example, where the cat was 20% overweight, it will take about a year to reach its ideal weight. As you have seen, the calculations are quite simple. But I also have some good news. There are some brands of food that in the same table where they tell you how much you should give. Your cat with its normal weight, also tell you how much you should give if it is a little overweight. And as you will see, they are quite consistent with the calculations we have made. Well, but as I mentioned at the beginning of the video, in order for your cat to reach its ideal weight, we have to rely on three pillars. One of them was diet. But let's move on to the second, which is physical exercise. It is very important that if you are making your cat lose weight, you do not rely solely on changes in diet. You have to start doing things so that your cat has a more active life. And how are we going to achieve this? Well, through play. Many of you tell me that your cat, who is a little overweight, doesn't want to play and barely wants to move. There's nothing that stimulates him enough. That's why we have to start taking Small steps. I recommend that you try to play with your cat from 8 to 10 at night or in the morning. At 7 in the morning, which are the hours when our feline companion is most active, because cats, as you know, become electric at those times. Also, if he's not very used to playing, what you have to do is start stimulating him. Start little by little with short play sessions of about three to four minutes. Let him rest for a bit and come back for another 3, 4 minutes and see how the cat behaves. We're also going to take advantage of the fact that our cat is a little hungry. And what we can do is save four or five of his daily kibble to give him while he's playing. This way, we can make sure that the cat receives a reward without increasing the amount of calories it eats in a day. If your cat is not very playful at first, you can stimulate it with different types of toys, see which one it likes the most and which one it reacts to the most. Cats generally pay more attention to small strings or feather dusters because they move in a way that they really like. The game you have to play with your cat is an active game. Don't let it lie down while you throw it. For example, a ball, hit it four times with your paw and it stays there sprawled out. Because in the end, our cat is not getting any exercise. Try to get it to move as much as possible and play. For example, at having it chase the feather duster or chase you with the feather duster all over your house. And now let's move on to the third pillar, which is to cat ify the environment, making it more enjoyable for your feline companion. It has been shown that cats that have a rich environment, that have things to do during the day, stay awake longer because they are always stimulated, looking for hiding places or looking for things to do to entertain themselves. Cats that, however, have a very flat environment, do not have places to climb, places to hide, and tend to lie on the couch all day long. And all that time they are lying on the couch, they are not burning calories. Therefore we are not getting them to lose weight. But one thing happens. Cats that are a little chubby are not very used to climbing. Some of them may have pain in their hips and legs because being overweight can hurt these areas. That is why at first, it is very possible that even if you put a scratching post this high for them to climb on, your cat will not care at all and will continue lying in their little corner of the couch. Although you do need to start enriching the environment if you haven't already done so. For a cat that is a little overweight, the thing that will stimulate them the most are activity feeders. You don't need to spend a huge amount of money on a feeder because you can make one yourself. You can use homemade solutions such as making one with a bottle that I showed you a long time ago on the channel. But you can also use other things like cardboard toilet paper rolls. With these, you can either make a pyramid or small holes in the floor glued together so that your cat has to use its paw to get the food out. The most important thing is that the feeder has a sufficient base so that your cat doesn't knock it over to get all the food at once. For example, if you use an egg carton, which is also a good activity for cats, glue it to a larger cardboard base so that your cat can't hit it with its paw. The egg carton flying off, and all the food is scattered around your living room. But if you're not really into crafts or you're not very good at it, they also sell them ready made with little mazes, little hiding places, little puzzles that our cats have to solve if they want to eat. With these three keys, I can assure you that your cat has to lose weight. Well, there's one last key missing, which is you. It needs your full involvement and that of your entire family. Because if we at home haven't realized that our cat's excess weight is a problem for him, a problem that can affect his health, it will be very difficult for us to get him to his ideal weight. That's why it's so important that you follow all the steps methodically. If we do it willy nilly, your cat will most likely not lose weight and you'll say, oh, but why isn't my cat losing weight? It's because my cat is chubby and tends to be a little chubby. Right? It's just that we're not doing it right. Quote and have you ever tried to make your cat lose weight and failed? Well, here you have all this and leave me a comment. Also, I'll leave you some homework for your future self. Leave me a comment if your cat manages to lose a few pounds. If you liked the video, also give me a like and remember to subscribe to the channel if you haven't already. We have a secondary channel here on YouTube called Questions and Answers from a Veterinarian. Come on over and check it out. Also, remember to subscribe to both of our channels so that YouTube will notify you when we upload a new video. Don't leave yet because we're going to meet these beauties, Nemu and Tasuki, who live with Melina, who is originally from Argentina but currently resides in Jerusalem. This here is Mecca, a beautiful Kure breed cat. They tell us that she is not purebred, nor does she need to be. She is just the way she is. She lives with her human companion, Sylvia, Viviana. And we said goodbye with the first birthday when they sent us the photo, they must be almost three now, of Bonnie and Loki. They greet us from Argentina with their human companion who is from Venezuela. Dylan, thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel and we'll see you in the next video. We also pressed up top because I look like Monchi dough. That's not even two kilometers away. I'm going to be very clear. Okay. How can you make your cat lose weight? With a method. With a method. Today I'm going to tell you how you do it. With an infallible method, right? Yes, for a 4kg cat. So take this very seriously. Okay? Well, I'm simply going to do this for everything. Yes, that's why I didn't recommend it. If a cat has. Wait, here, I've set an example. This is if we have to give him 123 to 148 and the feed gives him 472 calories per.120 grams in total. With a rule of three. That's so many grams.123. With a 400, the cat is going to go hungry. Everyone who is going to eat is going to go hungry. Welcome to the real world. Normally the cat is going to lose like tubes, rolls of paper, but if you're not really into this whole crafts thing. I have a photo of the pyramid.
