Dogs are sociable animals and love to socialize with others of their species. Now, as the saying goes, first impressions count, and this also applies to dogs, as a negative introduction can lead to eternal enmity. Do you want to know how to properly introduce two dogs? What things should you do and what things should you avoid? In this new video by an animal expert, we explain how to introduce two dogs for the first time. To ensure that everything goes perfectly, let's get started. Dog Socialization before introducing two dogs to each other, we should briefly explain what socialization is as it will determine whether or not our dog relates positively to them. In short, during the first few months of life, specifically from three weeks to three months, dogs go through a period of socialization in which they must interact with all types of dogs, animals, people, environments and objects. Once socialization is complete, fears appear. Therefore, if a dog has not been socialized correctly, it is very likely that in adulthood it will display behavioral problems. Problems such as fear, aggression, shyness, incessant barking, ignorance of dog language, etc. If our dog presents any of the behavioral problems we have mentioned, it is not advisable to try to relate it to other dogs, especially in the case of aggression, as it is very likely that this experience will further aggravate the behavioral problem it presents. In these cases, we recommend going directly to an ethologist or dog trainer. However, if your dog is correctly socialized, follow the following advice. First, find a neutral place. Some dogs exhibit territorial behavior at home. Therefore, the first introduction should always take place in a neutral place, preferably one that is unfamiliar to both. It could be in a park, for example. We also recommend that you choose a quiet time of day. Second, take a walk. Introductions are not always good, but walks are. Make the first impression positive by offering them a quality walk together, letting them sniff, get distracted and relieve themselves. Avoid leash pulling, obedience commands, and let both Enjoy a good walk. 3. The first introduction after about five or ten minutes of walking, we can introduce both dogs. Pay close attention to the body posture of both if you observe curly hair, ears forward, tail high in alertness, and other offensive signs. Avoid introducing them directly and take another walk so they can relax. On the other hand, if they give calming signals, invitations to play, or maintain a neutral and relaxed body posture. If we can introduce them, we will let them approach each other without forcing them to interact in any way. It is very positive that they blow their private parts where they have pheromones, because this is how they identify each other. You can reinforce both dogs with kind words, but we recommend avoiding food, rewards or petting, as this is the exclusive time for introductions and they should not compete for anything you want to offer them. 4. Playtime if you want the dogs to get along and play, they cannot be tied up. Make sure that the interaction between them is positive, that enough calming signals are given, and that they do not show any offensive signals under any circumstances. Find a large safe place for them to run and play with each other and let them interact freely. Do not use obedience to control them. This is their time to have fun, but supervise the situation at all times to prevent it from getting out of control. Problems with first Impressions if we know the calming signals and have noticed that both dogs have a positive body posture, in principle no incident should occur. But what happens if one dog mounts the other and starts a fight? What if one is particularly annoying and does not leave the other alone? In these cases it is important not to panic, not to shout too much, and especially not to punish the dogs. A state of generalized stress and excitement prevents the dog from concentrating properly. So in a calm manner, we will use basic obedience to ask our dog to come to us, and then we will encourage calmness with a sit or lie down. If we see that our dog is not relating correctly to another dog, we will leave the place and wait until the next day to start the procedure again, taking more walks and encouraging positive encounters between the two. Remember that punishment or negative experiences can cause your dog to associate negatively with the other dog and in more serious cases, generalize this bad association to other dogs. And that's it for today's video. Share your experiences in the comments and give us a like and subscribe if you found this video positive and want us to do more. Until next time, experts. Boom.
