Today, I bring you everything you need to know about a very important part of your cat's their gums. Hi, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. One of the things you ask me the most on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram is about caring for your cat's mouth. What really caught my attention is that many people are very concerned about the problem of gingivitis. But what's so surprising about that gingivitis? Well, it's like if you were to ask me specifically, I don't know, I don't know. Well, it could be that their cats have that problem and that's why they're asking me. I don't know, but it caught my attention. Well, yes, gingivitis is the inflammation and pain of the gums. And although it may seem unimportant, the truth is that it can be masking a large number of diseases. If you don't know how your cat gets gum disease or if your cat has gingivitis, please stay tuned because I'm going to explain it to you in this video. A large part of your cat's oral health depends on the gums because they are very important for keeping the teeth in place. Also, when they become inflamed, bleed and hurt, cats stop eating because they can't chew what you put in front of them. And on top of all this, if we consider that they are developing mouth ulcers, these can become contaminated, infected, and can become a very serious problem for your cat. But sometimes gingivitis is just the tip of the iceberg, because this type of problem can be caused by a virus that can also affect the throat, causing pharyngitis and inflammation of the throat. So it's normal for a cat not to want to eat because swallowing food in there bothers them a lot. And these are just some of the problems that gingivitis can cause. And how can you suspect that your cat has it? Well, it's simple. What happens is that you have to observe a little. If you see that he bathes a lot and that saliva falls from his mouth like a string of saliva or droplets of saliva, or if you also see that he stains the water a lot when he goes to the drinking fountain and drinks, it looks dirty, brownish, thick, or even with a few drops of blood, that is a very indicative of gingivitis. Okay. And another thing that can make you think about this is if his breath smells really, really bad, if he comes near you when you are asleep and you suddenly wake up from the stench he gives off, because sometimes it really is unbearable. If you observe all these things, you have to check the health of your cat's gums. And how can you do it? Well, it's very, very simple. You have to lift your cat's lip with your thumb. You do it like this to be able to see his gum. But how can you know if what you are seeing is good or bad? That is whether or not your cat has gingivitis. The color of a cat's mouth should be approximately the same as yours, like pink, without any type of reddish area or area that bleeds. Well, look at this photo, because here you are seeing the mouth of a cat that has gingivitis. If there is a kind of reddish halo around the teeth that is like an early stage of gingivitis. If, in addition to this, what, when you lightly touch them with your finger, they start to bleed, that means that the gingivitis is much more advanced and that therefore you have to make a quick decision. Take it to the vet, if possible. Oh, by the way, those little spots that you see on the cat's lip are called lentigo simplex. And it is not a disease that will do anything bad to the cat, but rather they are simply small freckles that grow over time and are very typical in cats with orange coats. Gingivitis can be caused by multiple factors, from simply periodontal disease, where tartar builds up around the tooth due to poor hygiene and inflames the gums, to viral diseases such as leukemia, which we already talked about in a video, if you don't remember. I'll leave it here for you. I'll leave it here for you. Or even paleukopenia, or even the calcivirus. And there are also some other diseases that can end up causing gingivitis, such as kidney problems. However, if, in addition to your cat's bleeding gums, you've noticed that they've lost a lot of weight lately, that they're getting thinner, and that they're barely eating anything, the urgency of taking them to the vet is even greater. Because if your cat loses a lot of weight, their general health can deteriorate even more, and this can ultimately make things worse. Once at the vet, the options they can offer you will depend on the problem behind the gingivitis. If the gingivitis is caused by a lot of tartar on your cat, then simply clean its mouth and that's it, the problem is over. Because the gingivitis will eventually disappear if it is caused by kidney problems, diseases such as paleukopenia, leukemia, calcivirus, or even in some cases, tumors. The veterinarian will tell you about the treatment and diagnosis of your cat, because sometimes it may even be necessary to do blood tests. At this point, it is very important that you seek advice from the veterinarian because they will know the specific treatment that your cat needs. But there are many things that you can do at home to prevent your cat from getting gingivitis or also to improve its quality of life if it already has it. Here, we are going to separate two parts. How to prevent it. To prevent it from getting gingivitis if the problem is tartar, and to prevent tartar from depositing on your cat's teeth. Or how to help mitigate the problems of gingivitis if the cause is more serious. The best way to prevent this is to vaccinate your cat from a young age. Because many of the diseases that end up leading to gum inflammation have vaccines such as leukemia, calicivirus or paleukopenia. If you have your cat vaccinated and it is protected against these diseases, and you repeat the vaccinations when the vet tells you to, you will prevent your cat from getting the disease. This also applies if you are going to introduce a new cat into your home. If you already live with a cat and you are going to rescue or adopt another cat, make sure that your cat is well vaccinated and that the new one you are going to introduce into your home cannot transmit diseases to it. If you do a good quarantine period and separate the two cats, you can ensure that the new cat is completely healthy and that the cat that already lived with you is protected. Because many of these diseases are transmitted simply by drinking from the same water bowl or by being close and licking each other. The star way to prevent gingivitis in the event that it is caused by tartar in the mouth, is to brush your cat's teeth. Although it is not an easy task, I know that it is very difficult to open a cat's mouth and spend three quarters of an hour there brushing its mouth three times a week, because it is not just once a month, but quite often. But this is one of the best ways to prevent your cat from suffering from diseases in the mouth, both tartar buildup and inflammation of the gums. If your cat does not get along with toothbrushes, you should know that there are other alternatives. Do not give up, because one day you see that it is a disaster. Your cat scratches you, closes its mouth and runs away. You can also use mouthwashes specifically for pets. Please do not put your Listerine in your cat's drinking water because it could also be toxic to them. This type of rinse is quite easy to use because the label tells you how to dose it and how much product to apply per liter of water. Therefore, it is not lost and your cat will drink it while drinking without realizing it. It changes the flavor of the water. Most cats do not. But there are some cats that can be a bit picky about the flavor and may end up rejecting it. For these situations, there are also other alternatives that you can put in their food, such as a powder made with natural algae that cats usually eat quite well. It is a product that is marketed for this purpose because it has been shown to prevent tartar, prevents dirt from accumulating in the teeth, and therefore prevents the gums from becoming inflamed. In addition, you can also apply all of this advice if your cat has another disease because gingivitis causes the gums to become inflamed and even ulcerated. If we prevent bacteria from forming inside the mouth by using these types of antiseptic mouthwashes, well, of course, or whatever method you choose. In the end, what we achieve is that their gums become less inflamed by the presence of these bacteria, and therefore your cat has less pain and can feed much better. Well, that's it. Preventing gingivitis is that simple. It's true that it's a disease that occurs very frequently, and I understand that you're worried. If I want you to remember one message, it's that at the first sign of gingivitis, you should take your cat to the vet. Because there are many times when we think it's nothing. There are many times when we say, well, their mouth smells a little, but no, if they don't get too close to me, it's okay. And in the end, what ends up happening is that the cat has a very serious health problem or even ends up losing its teeth because. Because it has a very large infection in its mouth, greatly complicating the problem and greatly affecting your cat's health. Please don't wait, because the sooner you act, the sooner we can find a solution to this problem. And that's it for today's video. If you liked it, give it a like and share it with everyone. A good follower of the channel, Marga, has posted Simba and Oreo in the Facebook group, who get along very well. Oreo was a kitten who already lived with Marga, and they adopted a new cat so that Oreo wouldn't feel so lonely. They spend the day playing and in the end they end up exhausted. Well, as you can see here. Hey, but it's no use, Oreo. You're much bigger. Look s on his back. Maybe you already know Oreo because we talked about him in a special video, the 100 videos video on the Happy Pets and Families channel. And, well, they told us that he had a little problem, that he was a little bit dry with his nipple. Well, Marga has also told me that he's behaving better, that he doesn't do it as much anymore because app, he says he's going for a walk. And the truth is that BB Lucky has a face to die for. It's like a little cloud. Hey, Aqua. To have one cat or two. Irene, it's always better to have many cats. The more cats in the house, the better. No, I'm not kidding. For Minerva, it would be good if you could end up finding her a companion if you can afford it and have time, because that way she won't feel so lonely in your house. Minerva, she really is beautiful, huh? Look at that little face. How old is Minerva? Because, oh, how tiny. We love meeting your pets because you introduced them to us many times in the Facebook group and, well, they're all so cute. If you want us to feature your pets in the videos or for us to meet them, you know what to do. Leave us a photo in our Facebook group and maybe we'll put it in this section until next week and hit the bell so YouTube can get it fake, right? I'm telling you. Gingivitis or gingivitis. Gingivitis. Gingivitis. From gingivitis. Gingivitis. What the cat might end up doing is stop eating. Stop eating. I don't know how to say it there. Not that I know of. Let's see if I'm going to be wrong for the rest of my life. It's gingivitis. If you do it like this and show it your tooth. Right. If you show it to it. Right. But I've always said gingivitis from the gingiva. From the. My teeth are stuck or something. It's because I ate almonds. Gingivitis. Sure. You might think that your cat you think about when you have a cold. You don't think. Well, now is when this. If around the teeth appears like a kind of halo. I can say halo. And this, in the end, is a problem for recovery. Uh, heavy. I don't want to say anymore. What do you do? And they fill our day with a little more. And they fill our day with joy. They are eating the flies good with the toothbrushes. Oh, the flies. Really. It's just that my face always comes up.
