Carlos, a veterinarian, explains how to tell if your cat is dehydrated and shares basic spring care tips. He covers shedding, parasite prevention, heat cycles, and hydration signs to watch for during warmer months.
Foreign Hi, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. I don't know if you've noticed Lobey's sin. It's already getting a little warmer and we're entering that season of the year called spring, which is lasting less and less because summer is arriving earlier and earlier. Well, in any case, in this part of the world, we're leaving the dreaded winter behind, and our feline companions are also entering this beautiful season with us. The thing is that after a few slightly colder months, as things are also starting to change, we have to take into account what care we have to give our cat when spring arrives. Let's start with the most basic. We have to take a little more care of our cat's fur. Why? Well, at this time of year, our cats start to shed that warm coat that has accompanied them during the winter and start to shed the hair that will accompany them during the summer, which is a little lighter. So it is more normal for our cats to start losing a little more hair. That is why we have to be a little more careful and brush them more often. This is not just a question of aesthetics or so that you do not get hair on your clothes, but also because our cat, with its coat covered in fur, will swallow less hair and it is less likely that we will have problems with hairballs that our cat will get hair in its stomach and in the end it will end up vomiting a huge amount of hair around your house. That is why I recommend that at this time of year, if you brush your cat more or less once a week, you move on to brushing it twice. And if your cat is one of those long haired cats, then brush it absolutely every day to remove all that dead hair and excess hair that is on its body. Also, during this time of year, we can use the typical fulminator a little more, which is a commercial brand, as you know, but it is a brush that removes a lot of dead hair from our cat and can help us with this fearsome task. I have actually started using an artichoke brush because I am seeing that it is leaving everything full of hair. And that is because it is a cat that does not normally shed much. And many times you tell me, oh, my cat does not let me brush him. When you see the comb, you go crazy. Well, for these cases, I recommend that you use the typical tactic of approaching your cat when he is a little sleepy. That way, when you start to brush him, he will think that you are giving him a little Massage, a few caresses and he will let you brush him much more easily. In spring, the hours of sunlight also increase. In fact, recently here in Spain, we have already changed the time and we have an hour more sun. Everyone likes that and so does your feline companion. However, this is also usually synonymous with rising temperatures. That's why you always have to make sure, especially for cats that can go outdoors, that they always have shade available. That's insurance. If our cat stays out in the sun for too long and can't get shelter anywhere, it could end up getting heatstroke, which also happens to cats. And it's very dangerous. And you have to be especially careful with cats with white coats because these cats are more likely to suffer from sun related problems. In fact, certain sun related cancers are much more likely in this type of cat, such as squamous cell carcinoma, both on the nose and ears. These cats sometimes need a little sun protection, a specific sunscreen for cats that human sunscreen doesn't work for them, and more things related to the heat. I don't know if you've noticed that there are also more bugs around your house. Mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and even in the gardens. All of this can have a huge impact on our cats. Look, if your cat goes outside, even if it is supervised, it is exposed to a lot of external parasites, specifically fleas and ticks, which can also transmit some diseases to your cat. That is why it is very important that you consider deworming during this time. In addition, fleas can cause an allergic reaction to cats that are especially sensitive. And that is quite worrying because our cat's skin starts to itch a lot and it starts to scratch itself compulsively, causing huge wounds. That is why once again, it is very important that you think about deworming your cat. But there is also something else that I have not told you many times on the channel, but the other day I was asked on our Instagram and that was whether cats can suffer from leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis is a chronic and quite serious disease that usually occurs in dogs, but can also occur in cats and is transmitted by mosquito bites. That's why many anti parasitic products also have mosquito repellents and I recommend that you use them especially at this time of year. Another thing related to the heat. Is it possible that your feline companion wants to eat a little less? You shouldn't worry. Especially in late spring and summer, cats eat less food and you might ask why is that? Because they sleep more hours during the day. Well, it's also true that when it's very hot, they prefer to sleep. But there's another explanation. When our cats eat, they generate a lot of heat during digestion. You also tend to want to eat lighter foods during the summer and late spring. Why? Because you don't want to see a heavy digestion. Well, it's exactly the same with cats. If your cat eats a lot, they're going to have to digest a lot of food, and that makes them hot and overwhelmed. That's why if you notice that your cat eats a little less when it's a little warmer, but everything else seems normal, you don't have to worry. However, if you notice that your cat starts to lose a lot of weight and is eating a little less or is vomiting or has diarrhea, in those cases, take him to the vet to see what's wrong. Now, I'm going to ask you a question. Is spring the season for flowers? Of course. Well, we also have to be careful with flowers and plants and our cats at this time of year. It may be that in your house there are always the same number of pots, that is to say, zero, because your cat eats them all. But in some places it is more common to give flowers as gifts or to have flowers in our homes, we have to take into account which ones are toxic to our cats. And there are some, for example, that bloom in late spring and summer that are very toxic, such as lilies. In these cases, we don't want them near our cats because even their pollen can cause kidney problems. So whenever you're going to bring any type of plant or flower into your home, find out if it's compatible with your pointy eared companion. But there are many, right? Diphenbachia, this typical white flower, is also toxic. There are many that can affect cats and that must be taken into account. More important things about spring. At this time of year, cats usually begin their heat cycle. The heat cycle of cats will last from spring until more or less fall, almost the beginning of winter. And cats usually go into heat several times during that season. In fact, it is very normal for cats to have up to two litters in that period of time. What happens when our cats go into heat? Both the cats and the cats are a little more restless. That's why it's important that if your cat lives indoors, it doesn't feel the need to go outside to mate because it's picking up on the call of nature, which are the pheromones and meows of other cats. In these cases, it's best to castrate our cats to prevent them from suffering all the stress of needing to reproduce at all costs and not being able to. But in addition, if your cat goes outside, you have to worry a little more not only about bringing unwanted litters into the world that will eventually overpopulate our neighborhoods with cats, but also because during mating seasons, especially, male cats that are not neutered may be at greater risk of being infected with certain viruses, such as the feline immunodeficiency virus, for which we don't have an effective vaccine. What happens? Because cats are going into heat, they fight much more, and it's more common for them to get infected in fights where blood and direct contact occur between cats. And if I'm telling you that it's starting to get a little warmer, we also have to watch our cat's hydration. Cats are animals that naturally don't drink much water. I've told you this many times in many videos. They just kind of forget. Well, the truth is that they're animals that are used to living in quite harsh climates, even in the desert, and that's why they don't need to drink much water. What happens if our cat usually eats dry food? Their water needs increase because they're not eating fresh meat. That's why we have to leave several water bowls scattered around our house, especially if it's much warmer and to check your cat's hydration. And it's very useful to do the skin pinch test. And you might ask me, well, what is that? Well, here we have the cat who has voluntarily offered himself. And one thing you can do is here, behind the nape of the neck, give it a little pinch like this. And you should see that the skin fold goes back to normal almost instantly. And you'll see that the fold flattens out very quickly. When it doesn't, it doesn't. And when it doesn't stay up like cardboard. Let's see. Look, if it stays up in the case of the artichoke, right? Because it's well hydrated, it means that our cat is probably a little dehydrated. It's drinking less than it should. I recommend that in these cases, you watch what type of water fountains you're giving it. If you're changing its water frequently, try changing it a couple of times a day so that it's always fresh. Or consider buying it a cat fountain that greatly encourages your cat to drink because it likes that water a little more. And if you don't have a fountain, you have to make sure that it drinks at least one glass of water a day. Sure, when you have multiple water bowls, it can sometimes be hard to check, but try to be more or less aware to see if your cat is drinking enough. Other ways to check if your cat is drinking enough water is to keep an eye on the puddles of urine in the litter box. How clumpy the litter is, because that's where you can see more or less the amount of urine they produce. If you keep in mind how your cat usually pees, I know more or less how the cat does, then you'll be able to see that when cats are dehydrated, the pee is a little smaller or completely non existent in the litter box. In all these cases, I recommend that you run to the vet and tell them so they can take a look and see if something is wrong. Changes in your cat's activity don't be alarmed if you see that your cat is less active at this time of year. I've already told you it's hot. I prefer to sleep a little more and that's absolutely fine. Or they're breathing a little faster than usual. Many times in the videos I've told you to notice if your cat's breathing is faster or slower. To do this, you have to count how many times its chest moves over the course of a minute. Sometimes, when it's a little warmer, like in spring, cats get a little more tired than usual. This usually happens especially at the end of spring. And if they've been playing, they may either want to play for a short time and just lie down and say, okay, you're going to play with your human because I can't take it anymore. Or they may pant a little in a light way. In these cases, if it's related to a rise in temperatures, the panting shouldn't worry us too much. If, however, you see that your cat is panting without any exercise or doesn't want to move or jump, in these cases, we should be concerned and tell our vet so they can examine it and see if it has any kind of problem. Generally, these things are related to heart problems. As you can see, in spring there are a lot of things that we have to look out for our cats. However, it is quite a happy time of year. Our cats have more time to look out the windows. Sometimes more flies come into our house and they do not necessarily pose a risk to them, but perhaps they are entertaining. Imagine your cat trying to catch a small grasshopper. Well, I can tell you that the cat would go completely crazy. In fact, the Cat really likes this time of year. It spends a lot of time looking out the window because there are also more birds, there is more life on the street, and it sees more people walking. So for this time of year, what I have to recommend that your cat does not lack access to a window. Either a hammock or it can go out onto the windowsill by putting a net around it so that it is a little more entertained. Surely this way you will keep your cat much more active and you will help him a lot with the cat ification of the house. And does your cat do anything like this in the spring that he didn't do before? Well, leave me a comment and tell me about it, especially if it's something funny, because that way you entertain the whole community. And I'm sure that even if it's at the expense of your cat, he doesn't mind at all that you share his secrets. On the other hand, if you liked the video, what you have to do is give me a like and subscribe to the channel if you haven't already. Also, hit the bell so that YouTube will notify you when we upload a new video, which I already told you is every Wednesday. And I'm going to tell you a secret. Run to your phone's settings and activate all the notifications on the YouTube app. Because if not, even if you have the bell, you won't find out anything. On the other hand, when we have a secondary channel here on YouTube called Questions and Answers from a Veterinarian. Come on over and take a look. And don't leave yet, because first we have to meet Valentina and Hansel, who greet us with their human companion, Ananda from Alcala Daenerys. They also leave us a photo of their previous feline companion, whose name was Morgan. And over here we have Baguira, who, well, when she was little, they thought she was a kitten. However, when she grew up, they realized she was a cat. She greets us with her human companion, Juan Carlos, and we say goodbye to Musu, the kitten and her best friend, who in this case is a dog and his name is Oliver. They greet us with their human companion, Barbara Isabella Flores. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel. And we'll see you in the next video. But you're not going to sleep. You're not going to sleep now. You're not going to sleep at night. You don't sleep during the day. Yes. No, you're not going to sleep. Go with Carlos. Hey, you people want to see you not me, but how fat everyone is. Come here. And what do I look like here? Vito Kolionis, wake up. He's planted here by the city council. Come on. Another thing. I mean, uh, the cat is normally sleeping soundly. I take two steps through the house, he wakes up and such. Here you're talking to him a lot, and the cat is asleep, as if he didn't hear because he's with you and he's calm. The cat follows you because you move. Now try leaving him here on the couch and moving around the house. No, it's not possible. There you go. Look at doing it like this. Okay, don't move the cat. I mean, you've been still the whole time, and now you're going to move. Get up here. And that's a hydrated cat. Ah, this cat is making me so hot. Ugh. I'm going to get off him. He's making me so hot. Get down. Oh, we could put out a little table like we were giving him the news. Yeah.
