¿CON QUÉ SUEÑAN LOS GATOS? 🐱💤 | Los secretos de los gatos cuando duermen

Veterinarian Carlos explains what happens in a cat's brain while it sleeps, including REM sleep patterns and what cats might dream about. The video covers scientific studies on feline sleep behavior with humor and viewer engagement mixed in.
Foreign it's clear that one of the things your cat likes the most in the world is sleeping. But what you may not know is that you can also dream. And in today's video, I'll tell you what that is. Hi, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. Although it's true that the vast majority of animals sleep, that doesn't mean that all of them dream. Why do we know that our cats can generate dreams? Well, because studies have been done. On the one hand on the sleep phases when they're asleep, and on the other hand on the activity of their brain. Dreams specifically occur in a phase when they're asleep called the REN phase. It's called that because it's an acronym in English that stands for rapid eye movement. And it's because even though our eyelids are closed, we people and our cats of course, don't stop moving our eyes. This doesn't just happen to people and cats. It also happens to many other mammals, reptiles, and even birds. Of course, all the information I used to make this video is linked below in the description box. On the one hand, we have those moving eyes, those sleep phases, B But how the brain works during this phase has also been studied. In the REM phase, the brain doesn't stop producing energy because it's constantly connecting ideas. Even if you see your cat sleeping peacefully, its brain isn't so much at rest, it's extremely active. Okay, we already know that our cat dreams. You might say, well, but all animals dream when they fall asleep. Well, not all of them. For example, some fish only sleep half of their brain and keep the other half alert, like sharks. And others forget to sleep when they're migrating. Needless to say, these fish don't dream. So we've already seen a little bit about how the brain works when it comes to sleeping and producing dreams. But what does your feline companion dream about? Let's start at the beginning. It is very complicated to know what the content of your cat's dreams are, because we can't ask them. Well, it is even complicated to know in people because, for example, I never remember what I dream about. Well, imagine with your cat, taking into account what we do know about people. Dreams repeat or replicate the experiences that we live during our day to day life. This is called the theory of dream continuity. Well, you might say to me, well, but sometimes I have dreamed that I was flying. I have not experienced that in my day to day life, so how can it be that I replicate it? When I am asleep? Well, it is precisely because you may have seen images of people flying or a bird flying, and you want to include that in your dreams. Because people not only have the experiences that we live, but also the ones that we see, for example, in the movies, on television, with the news, and that ends up having an impact on what we dream. When you watch a horror movie at night, you imagine and dream the same thing you saw in that movie. In contrast to this theory, there is another one that says that dreams are really like aspirations that we don't have, like something we reflect when we are asleep, that we want to happen. This theory is a little more complicated because it implies that our brain must have a capacity for abstraction, like wanting something in the future, something that has not been shown to exist in our cats, for example. That is why our cats dreams are thought to be governed by this theory of continuity. That is, when they are asleep and dreaming, they are remembering things that they have experienced during the day. And that is where the immense activity that brains have when they are asleep comes from. Including our cats, because they are busy generating all these images and memories. What is really thought is that the brain is sorting and organizing the information it has received in order to store it in memory and know how to use it in the future. That's why it's said that in order to have a good memory, or for example, before an exam, you have to sleep well. So that your brain has classified all that information well and can use it well. This would be exactly the same for our cats. But having said all this, I have to tell you that your cat's dreams probably aren't at all like yours, because their ability to perceive reality is greatly influenced by their ability to see it. For example, for your cat, seeing a little bird through a window might be very striking, but not for you, because you see a lot of them and that's it. But your cat might spend a little while there looking at it, saying, oh, I want to catch it. Or that new game strategy they've developed to catch their favorite toy, or that little while they spent looking for the fishing rod while you were having fun. All of that. Not to mention that they don't have the ability to listen to news and store it in their memory. They're not going to understand all that information. For them, what is important are those activities that are related to their survival and their daily activities, such as hunting, eating, or marking an area of their house so that the cat that roams the neighborhood doesn't get in. With this, we Already have a lot of information about what our cat's dreams should be like. And not just because we can guess by saying, well, our cat has to dream more or less like this. A long time ago, in the 70s of the last century, a study was carried out that demonstrated very interesting things. In this study, a very specific part of the cat's brain was modified, which is the one that prevents their body from moving when they are asleep. This part was inhibited so that the cats could move when they were dreaming. So when they entered REM sleep, they began to emulate movements in their body in relation to what they were evoking in their brain. And the movements that the cats developed, what were they, or surprisingly, they were similar to hunting, stalking, grabbing prey with their claws and even biting it, nibbling on it to eat it. That's why it was known that these cats were dreaming about everyday activities with the theme of hunting. Let's go. Obviously this is a fairly old study that was conducted in the 70s and involves experimentation on cats. And let's get this out of the way. I'm against animal experimentation, but while making the video, I came across the information and wanted to tell you about it. Precisely because of all this information that we have, we know what our cats dreams are like when they enter the REM phase, when they are deeply asleep. It is very possible that your feline companion is remembering things that they have experienced during their day. For example, the time they spend playing with you, the delicious food you give them. They may even dream about you and how comfortable they are when you pet them, because these are important moments in their daily lives, and their mind recalls them during sleep to organize all this information and keep it in their memory. And since deep sleep is very important for the brain to function properly, how can you tell if your cat is in the sleep phase so that you don't disturb them? Although cats normally remain still, their muscles do not move when they are asleep. Sometimes they may make small movements, as happens to people with their paws or tail. You can also see small movements in the area of their face. They are very common in the whiskers. You will notice how their mouth tenses up a little. And also in their eyelids, how they blink slightly without opening their eyes. Small spasms can develop throughout their body. Cats do this a lot when they are asleep, and their muscles sometimes contract even slightly when they are deeply asleep. These are not seizures. I had to tell you, seizures are completely different. The cat is simply in REM sleep. Many of you tell me that your cats also do this when they sleep and you ask me, hey, is he dreaming about catching a mouse? Well, he probably is. Occasionally. You may also notice that your cat's breathing is accelerated. He is agitated, nervous. Another thing you may notice are small noises while he is sleeping. Don't confuse this with snoring, which are completely different. And if you want to know why cats snore, check out the video that I have linked below from the channel where we talked about the subject. We people love to interpret the meaning of dreams, both our own and those of our cats. But one thing is very important and I do want to tell you, even if you see that your cat is sleeping, its brain is working very, very intensely. So even if you see it very adorable and you want to give it a pat, it is very important that you do not disturb it during this phase so that its brain does a good job and it has a good memory because. Because yes, cats have memory and I told you that a long time ago. Look, now it is breathing normally. Look. And today for the closing video, we did not wake the cat because it is fast asleep. Well, all that despite the fact that we have set up the recording equipment here, so it is better to leave it with its nap and with its brain activity. And what do you think your feline companion dreams about? Leave me a comment and tell me a little bit about it. Also, if you like the video, you know that you can give us a like and you can subscribe to the channel if you haven't already. Also, if you want to support us a lot, give us a super thank you. And remember that here on YouTube we have a secondary channel called Questions and Answers from a veterinarian. Stop by and take a look. Before we go, we're going to meet this little guy who is the lord and master of the house where he lives with his human companion, the Vanessa. His name is Chile and they both greet us from Chile and from Ecuador. Mixy greets us with his human companion, Leslie. Look how sleepy he is. To say goodbye, we travel to Uruguay. There is a cat there whose name I love. His name is Croquetta and he lives with his human companions Nacho and Phchas. Thank you for following the channel, happy pets and families. And I'll see you in the next video. I was going to say, what does your cat dream about? What do they dream about? Also they can dream. And today I'm also telling you what. And I've said also twice and today I'm telling you what? What are you dreaming about? And what movements cats Perform. Wait, wait, wait, wait. He didn't understand. Sleeping doesn't mean dreaming. But the sleeping part is obvious. You have no idea. Let me explain it. Because the script is written like that. Period. Just look at what I have to put up with. The whole thing, the whole thing moving from one place to another without getting any sleep. Literally. No, I literally don't pee because fish don't get any sleep. Okay, but why are you talking about other animals? No, let's go straight to cats. But that was just an example. One minute it was recorded. One minute. Boring, huh? Really? Look, one minute already. And before I had something super elaborate. That's it. Now I'm going without a script. This is not what I want to say. And I want this to be clear. And you're going to show me the outtakes. I'm going to do it without a story and I'm going to say it myself. Like this, period. They have me forced to on this channel. I don't even own my scripts anymore. He does it because he knows a lot about non veterinarians. Well, don't laugh because I don't find it funny at all. Your first criticism is that you ramble on and on. Don't ramble on. They don't criticize me for that anymore. No, they don't criticize you for anything. Okay, how would you say it? Okay, how? Come on. I'm going to see how the varangonal comes out. Although for the making of the video, everyone will recognize me when I come here as a master of humor, comedy and tragedy. Don't overdo it. I mean, there are times when I want to tell you you can't.
