The content focuses on responsible puppy ownership, emphasizing positive reinforcement and enhancing the unique traits of each dog to ensure confident and well-adapted adult dogs.
Hi, I'm Alberta Aragon. I'm part of the Green Dog association and we're dedicated to rehabilitating dogs from animal shelters through animal assisted interventions, fairs, exhibitions and different sports. We also offer training courses for this purpose. Today we're going to talk about puppies. Well, the truth is that I'm not really an expert on puppies because all the dogs I work with are adult dogs. They're dogs from animal shelters and they're usually already of a certain age. Although it's true that sometimes we can find young dogs and puppies in shelters. Like for example, that one. That one. That one is a 10 month old dog who has been with us for a few months now, rehabilitating and looking for a foster home or an adoption home. Therefore, she's up for adoption. And we also have Leo. Leo, Leo and Tara. Very good. This little guy is seven months old and as you can see, he's a crazy person. Only puppies suffer, not enjoy themselves. Puppies always suffer. That's what they say. Well, what I was telling you is that I'm not an expert on puppies, but I can tell you something about them. When a puppy is young, when it's a puppy, the first thing it needs is to develop emotionally in an appropriate way. You should always avoid aversive behavior or punishment towards them because that will ultimately diminish the dog's self confidence. That confidence will directly affect the curiosity this dog has about its environment and things about learning about socializing. You can teach them from a very young age, from three months old, as long as you don't demand too much from them. Above all, you have to respect their time, what they like to do. Above all, you have to look for the potential they have, the things they like to do the most. When a person has the chance to live with a puppy, to be with a puppy, they have the chance to experience that animal from a very young age, to get to know it from a very young age, and to be able to guide it from a very young age. But that is a very big responsibility. It is a responsibility that not everyone knows about or knows how to do well. That is why we have many dogs that end up in animal shelters when they were in a private home as puppies. Therefore, if we have the opportunity to be with a puppy, the ideal thing is always to enhance the dog's emotions, to try to observe what talents it has and what it likes to do the most. And of what it likes to do the most, what we will do that we will work on what it likes the most, making it increasingly more self confident, more curious, more energetic, eager to learn and move around the world without fear of anything. That is the main thing we need to achieve with a puppy. Beyond skills, exercises, obedience, making sure that the dog is happy, that it has no emotional problems. Above all, trying to enhance those characteristics that make it unique. Because in the end, all individuals, dogs, humans, other animals have characteristics that make them unique. And it depends on the person with them to discover and enhance them. If we enhance those characteristics, we will have an adult individual who is self confident, good, curious and ultimately adapted to living in the city and living with other living beings. That is what we have to achieve, rather than depriving them of biting our shoes, of peeing, of the fact that when a puppy arrives at a home, people correct absolutely everything it does, when we should mainly stop correcting and try to reinforce the good behaviors it has. It is a puppy, it has to learn, it has to be curious. That is what we have to try to do as good owners, companions, and ultimately with this dog. That is the fundamental thing. Furthermore, at Protectoras we already know that we can also adopt young dogs, puppies, but the responsibility will always be the same. Taking care of them, protecting them and giving them a chance to be confident in themselves and to enhance those characteristics that make them different from the others.
