Since your cat can't tell you, oh, my kidneys hurt today, I'm here to tell you how you can take care of them. Hi, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. I know that very few people will watch this video right off the bat because I'm talking about some things related to cat health. But it's very important because one of the main health problems that our feline companions usually suffer from has to do with their kidneys. Approximately 80% of cats will suffer from a disease related to this organ throughout their lives. But I'll give you another reason why you have to watch this video. Kidney disease in cats is progressive and irreversible when it first starts. That's why we have to prevent your cat from getting it. There are a number of risk factors that predispose cats to suffering from these diseases. Let's go over them. The breed cats. Persians, Abyssinians, Siamese, Ragdoll, Burmese, Russian Blue and Mun are more common than suffer from kidney disease. And it is also more common for their crosses if their grandparents or parents were of these breeds, to also have them age. Although it is true that kidney disease can appear at any age, it is much more common in older cats from 7 or 8 years old. Other health problems, cats that suffer from periodontal disease that is a lot of tartar in their mouth, heart problems. Also diseases such as diabetes or are infected with the immunodeficiency virus or feline leukemia are more likely to suffer from kidney problems. Their diet, diets that have very little potassium, very high phosphorus and a lot of protein are related to kidney problems as shown by a scientific study that I leave you here below. And how are they going to know if their diet has a lot? Well, that is why you have to be very careful with the diets that are made at home, because many times they tell you, no, cats only need protein, protein, protein. And that diet is not well balanced and you may be doing your cat a disservice. And the other thing about phosphorus, how are they going to balance it for you? If a person does it well for you, then it is normal for them to give it to you well. And not just any diet out there will do. Look it up online. And finally, although this is not a predisposing factor, it may have suffered poisoning. There are some things that can poison our cats, plants, medications such as human ibuprofen, which is very dangerous because it can cause kidney problems that can ultimately affect our cat's kidney health. That is why we have to be especially careful if we have any type of substance or plant at home that could affect our cats. Have you suddenly found the little paper of the pills chewed on or the plant that you always had at home and that your cat ignored the slightest bit and you did not know that it was perhaps toxic? Well, very chewed. In these cases, we must also suspect that our cat is having a health problem related to poisoning. And be very careful with lilies that directly affect this part of our cats, even with their pollen. In other words, it is enough for our cat to be in a room with a lot of lilies, with a lot of pollen for kidney disease to eventually occur. And how can you suspect that your cat has kidney disease? Generally, cats that suffer from it tend to vomit much more suddenly. For some time now, they vomit every two or three days or vomit every day. They are also cats that lose their appetite and tend to lose weight. Their fur usually looks dirty because they also groom themselves a little less. And they are also cats that drink a lot of water and pee a lot. Are you going to suspect that your cat drinks a lot of water? Yes. Given the size of an average cat, approximately 4 kg, they drink more than a 250 ML glass of water a day. Especially if they didn't do so before. And what about pee? What do we do? Well, if your cat pees more than three times a day or so, the urine is very large, which soaks the litter box much more than it did before, which is an indication that it is overdoing it. But please, if your cat is drinking more than its fair share, you should not ration it. You should always give it the amount of water that your cat wants to drink. Because if we take away the water, we will not be eliminating the problem. We will simply be causing our cat to become dehydrated, because the urine will continue to be very large and it is not drinking the amount of water that it needs. So if we see that it drinks more, it is an alarm signal that should go off in our brain to take it to the vet. But in no case should we limit the amount of water that our cat drinks. How can you protect the health of your cat's kidneys? The most important thing is always prevention. Before the disease appears, we must take the right steps so that our cat does not get sick. Of course, the best way to improve the health of our cat's kidneys is for them to drink enough water. Before, when I told you that cats drink a lot of Water when they have kidney disease because their kidneys are not able to concentrate their urine. They make very diluted urine because their kidneys are not working properly. But if our cat drinks enough water when it is healthy, what we will be doing is ensuring that our cat's kidneys are working properly because it is well hydrated. Therefore, you have to make sure that your cat, weighing around 4kg drinks a glass of water a day. How can you make your cat drink the amount it needs? Because cats sometimes forget. By providing water fountains, having several places to water in your house so that it is always fresh and clean. But there is also another way to give your cat water without it realizing it. And you have heard me say it on the channel many times. If you give your cat a can of wet food at least once a day, or once every two or three days, you will be helping it to stay well hydrated. You have to control how you feed your cat. It is somewhat related to the issue of canned. Obviously, if we feed your cat commercial diets, they are usually well formulated, especially if they are of good quality and have enough potassium, phosphorus and protein. This way our cat will be well nourished. But if you opt for a diet that you prepare at home, well, I'm not going to go into whether it's raw or not, although you know that I advise against raw diets. But if you opt for this type of diet, you should always seek advice from a specialist to avoid imbalances in the diet that could affect the cat's health. But even if you feed your cat a commercial diet, you should always pay attention to the amount you put on its plate. Because one of the predisposing factors for kidney disease is precisely diabetes. And diabetes can occur in cats that gain a lot of weight because they are insulin resistant due to being so fat. If we make our cat fat by feeding it a lot of food, it could end up triggering problems derived from the overweight, diabetes. And this can lead to kidney disease. And of course, be careful with treats. Treats are not complete foods for our cats. They are unbalanced so that our feline companion loves to eat them. These treats have a lot of things that cats like, such as fat and can make our cat end up gaining weight, triggering everything I just told you. And if we want to keep our cat's weight under control, we will also have to increase physical exercise. We always have to try to make our cat fitter and less fat. Of course, avoid self medicating your cat. There are some families who wanting to do their cat A favor because they see that they are a little tired or because they think something is hurting them. Give them the first thing they can grab from the medicine cabinet at home. And something that for us may be as harmless as ibuprofen is fine. If you take it in almost any situation for our cats, it is very toxic and directly affects how their kidneys work. So never give them anything. Give your cat ibuprofen. And whoever says ibuprofen means dal C, epyridol, paracetamol, antibiotics of any kind, all of that is forbidden for our cats. It is dangerous and can put their lives at risk. I know that this is a topic that you do not feel like talking about, but many people tell you, but my vet prescribed a quarter of a paracetamol pill for my cat for something. Sure, but if your vet has prescribed it for you, it's because you can give it to them because they have specifically dosed it for your cat and because they know the exact amount you can give them, because they have assessed all the options and have seen that it was the most suitable for your cat. If you do it under veterinary supervision, I wouldn't get involved in that. And if your cat is one of those breeds that are predisposed to suffering from kidney disease, what you have to do is be aware of this from the beginning and take them to the vet so that they can do the necessary tests. If we see in the tests that there is any parameter that is out of balance, that we are already beginning to see that our cat may have kidney disease, it is easier to remedy it when it is just starting than when it is already very advanced. That is why you always have to have your five senses activated if you live with a cat of a breed predisposed to suffering from these diseases. And the same is somewhat applicable to cats that are older than seven or eight years old. From at this age, at least one checkup a year, or ideally one every six months, can help us a lot to prevent these problems. And there's little else to add. Please, if you've reached this point, I have to ask you to share the video with everyone who has cats around you. As I said, up to 80% of our feline companions are going to have one of these problems at some point in their lives. So you can see how important it is. If we're all educated, in the end, we'll be able to help our cats better. Also, if you liked it, give it a like and subscribe to the channel if you haven't already. If you hit the bell. YouTube will notify you. When we have a new video, we also have a secondary channel called Questions and Answers from a Veterinarian. Go over and take a look. Before we leave, we meet little Lucas, who sleeps with this stuffed animal in Mexico and greets us from there with Olga Leticia Vilagron, his human companion. And this cute little face is from Sassy, who lives in Barcelona with his human companion, Victoria Catalan. And this delightful little face belongs to Santi, who is Rocchio Arco's feline companion. He greets us from Chile. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel. And we'll see you in the next video. Video. Give the video some love. Finally. No one has reached this point yet. Okay, okay, let's go. The first sentence Jose won't like in today's video, I'm going to show you, right? Because you don't want to show me, right? And you're not my pride as a professional, are you? He's combed his hair like this. M okay. Why? No, because what you're telling me is that his hair is weird. I combed it because I had it like this, like from his communion. And then I said, look, it's better if it's a little bit up, because there's a little bit of joy, than not having communion. It's always the camera in person. I don't know how to take that. There's a lot of envy in the world. I'm also telling you this because this hair object is the one I have and this hair density is the one I have. You don't think it's okay? You always give me an answer like you, because sometimes it looks like I just woke up with my hair. Let's go. How do you want me to wear it? A little bit of the neighborhood.
