How exaggerated you are. But today I'm here to talk to you about how to make the summer more bearable with your cats. Hello, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. We've received many questions about how to make the summer more bearable with cats. This isn't your typical video with five tips to keep your cat warm. Well, maybe it is, but believe me, they'll be very useful for helping your cat endure this hottest season that's coming our way. And yes, winter may be starting in your country right now. But hey, since summer is starting right now in Spain, I wanted to share these tips with you. You can save them for when summer arrives in your area, or if it's summer, you'll be able to use them. Now imagine how your cat must feel with a fur coat around its body all year round. Well, for the winter it's not so bad because they're super warm. But for the summer, it's a real pain. Please. And this makes your cat a little less active, doesn't want to move as much, spends most of the day sleeping or lying behind a sofa where it's cool and stuff like that. I don't know if you know that cats can't cope with the heat like we can. They don't sweat all over their bodies, only through the little prints of their paws, through their pads. And although this may seem like an advantage to you, especially when you get on the subway at five in the afternoon and you have someone's arm here and everything smells like crap, don't think it's that much, because sweat helps us release a lot of excess heat, especially in the summer. And if your cats don't sweat, then what do they do with all that heat they don't give off? What cats do to cope a little better with the heat is to groom themselves and lick their fur so that it stays a little damp. And in that way they lose a little more heat. But even if your cats are smart and do this to cope a little with the high temperatures, it is possible that the heat around them is so high that you may have to do something to help them. The first thing I want you to do is learn to say no to your cat. I know that a cat is like a spoiled child who is given all his whims for no reason. But your cat may sit in front of the window and sunbathe peacefully. And of course, at this time of year, the sun's rays can affect him a lot. They can burn his skin, his little nose, his little ears. Or they can make him feel bad. They can give him heat stroke or sunstroke. I don't know if this happens to you, but. But when I go to the beach, I don't realize until I get home that my skin is sunburned or that I feel bad because I've been in the sun too much. In these cases, what you have to do is move your cat away from the window or draw the curtains so that it's not directly in the sun, turning it back and forth as if it were on a grill. I have to insist on this issue a lot because especially during the middle of the day, the amount of ultraviolet radiation your cat receives is enormous. Therefore, what you have to do is only let it be in the sun for 15 or 20 minutes at a time at most. Because, of course, the sun is good for your cat. But too much of it at this time of year with the sun so strong, can be a serious problem. Heatstroke is not a minor issue. It can put your cat's life at risk. But I don't want you to think that the sun is a monster that we have to run away from. The only thing I want you to keep in mind is caution. Okay, now that you're feeling scared, which wasn't my intention, let's move on to something else. Focus on air conditioning your home, because that's good for you and good for your cat. How can you do it? Well, as I said, you draw the curtains, but you can also turn on the air conditioning. At what temperature? Well, around 24. But it's very important that you don't point the air conditioning jet directly at the floor, because your cat might sit in front of it saying, let all the cool air come to me so I can endure the summers they throw at me. Well, no, that's a mistake. Your cat isn't always going to be in front of the air conditioning, so it's always going to have very sudden changes in temperature because the air comes out very cold from the device. And it's possible that later or when it's a bit cooler, it goes back into the sun. So all these changes in temperature can cause it to catch a cold. And this can lead to a fairly serious lung problem. So always remember to point the air conditioning unit towards the ceiling so that your cat can't stand in front of it and get hit with all the cold air at once. You can also help your cat with a water bottle if you fill it with cold water or very cold water. You can put it near his bed so that when he feels very overwhelmed by the heat, he. He can get a little closer to the bottle or he can even hug it to stay a little cooler. But be careful. I'm talking about cold water. You don't have to freeze it, because if you freeze it and your cat hugs it or comes into contact with it, he could end up getting frostbite. If you make it too cold, what I recommend you do is wrap it in a blanket to prevent your cat from coming into direct contact with the bottle. By the way, during these times of year, remember that your cat always wants to have fresh water in his drinking fountain. We've already talked about how to properly hydrate your cat in another video on the channel, and I recommend that you go and watch it right now. During the hotte of the day, it's incredibly important that your cat drinks the amount of water it needs to do this, the water in its drinking fountain should always be perfectly to its taste. Since they don't like hot water very much, try changing it from time to time. You can fill it with water from the fridge or even add an ice cube to make it a little cooler, because cats tolerate water that's already Quite good after 4 grams or so, especially if it's much hotter outside. Also, if you want, you can put a water fountain in which you can also put an ice cube so that the fountain has much cooler water and your cat gets stimulated and drinks. You can also groom your cat. I don't recommend that you start licking their fur, but you can do something similar to what they do when they lick themselves, which is to say, slightly dampen it. And what do I mean by slightly, please? If you use a damp cloth to wipe over their fur and keep your cat a little cooler, dampen it with water. Dampen it with water. That's it. You can't leave their fur completely soaked in water. You can't leave it dripping with water because that will dry out the top of the fur, but not the part that's in contact with the skin. Hair stuck to damp skin causes bacteria to start growing on the skin, including fungi, and in the end, all that ends up causing dermatitis. That's why if you're going to dampen their fur a little, what you have to do is wring out the cloth very well and simply wipe it lightly. There are cats that also tolerate bathing quite well, although you know that I'm not very much in favor of bathing cats because of all the stress it causes them. If your Cat tolerates water well. Only on the hottest days you can give it a little soak so that it does not feel so stressed. And now you may be asking me, can't I cut my cat's hair a little? Well, long haired cats must always have their hair very clean, free of tangles, knots and so on. For that you have to work hard every day. These types of long haired cats can have their hair cut a little, just the ends, but nothing more. You should never go so far as to completely shave your cat and leave it without any hair on top because you think that this way it will be cooler. Because quite the opposite, your cat may be much hotter that way. The hair on top of the skin creates a small air cushion that keeps it more insulated from the heat around it. If you completely remove the hair, you're also going to eliminate that air chamber and your cat is going to suffer much more from the heat. Also connecting a bit with the topic of the sun that I mentioned at the beginning of the video, if your cat doesn't have hair, the sun's radiation is going to hit its skin much more directly and can burn it. Cat's skin is very delicate, very thin, and the only protection it has is its hair. If you remove it, you're going to remove its natural shield and leave it completely exposed to all the aggressions of the external environment. And I know I'm repeating myself like garlic on this topic, I've told you this 1000 times already, but I'm going to tell you this 1000, 2000 or 5000 more times. Wet food has a lot of water and in these hot months, it is one of the main tools you have on hand to improve your cat's hydration. Even if you give it to them cold from the fridge, it will help them cool down a bit. And continuing with this topic of food, right now you are searching the Internet for ways to combat the heat with your cats. There are some articles where you will find that tell you to give them fresh fruit, that it is very good for them and that it is a way of hydrating them, and that it will cool them down a lot, etc. Fruit can have many advantages. Well, vitamins, water that it can provide your cat. But it can also have some drawbacks. Most fruit provides them with a large amount of fructose, the sugar found in fruit. For a cat that weighs about three kilograms, eating an apple or half an apple is a huge amount of fructose. Therefore, you cannot abuse fruit to cool your cat down. Therefore, it is Something that you can only do very sporadically. And of course, not all fruits and vegetables are the same. If you want to have a little more information, check out the video that I will leave here for you when you finish watching this one. And to finish off with this topic of food and how it can help your cat cool off, I am going to recommend that you make ice cream for your cat. Ice cream that you are going to make for him in a healthy way with the food that you have at home for him. It is very simple. Take a can of wet cat food. Remember that wet food has to be of good quality, that it does not have a large amount of its own products, and that you can clearly recognize the raw materials with which it is made on the label. In other words, always turn it over and read the label carefully. You can mix it with a little water, even putting it through the blender so that everything becomes a homogeneous paste. And from that paste that you have made, put it in an ice tray, fill the ice cubes and put them in the freezer. Once it has frozen, you will be able to take them out to give them to your cat and let your cat play with them, little by little, licking them, because they will also catch his attention, because they taste like his food, meat or fish, whatever the food is. And so half playing, half eating, he will end up cooling down. Of course, if you make these ice creams, you have to make them with cat food food specifically designed for them to eat. You cannot use dog food. And please do not put a stew in the ice cubes that you have made for yourself because it probably has a lot of fat and that in the end would be more counterproductive than anything else. And no, ice creams for humans are completely forbidden. I don't care if the ice cream is strawberry with berries or if it is very healthy because it has no sugar and only stevia. Artificial sweeteners are also toxic to cats. And most of the ice creams we eat have a huge amount of fat and sugar, so never give them to your cat. And don't worry if you suddenly notice that your cat eats a little less in the summer. Because many people ask me about this and say, oh, I don't know why my cat has been so listless lately, doesn't want to eat anything. And you realize that it's coinciding with an increase in temperatures with the arrival of summer. It's normal for cats to want to eat a little less in the summer because it's part of all these changes that they experience, they're less active, they want to move less, they use less energy and therefore have less need to replenish it by eating. Well, obviously, if your cat doesn't open its beak and doesn't eat anything at all, well, yeah, you should worry. But if your cat leaves some of what you normally put in its bowl, then don't worry, because in the summer it's normal for cats to have a little less appetite. Don't be like Totoro and listen to me. And that's it for today's video. If you liked it, give it a like and share it with everyone. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families Channel, and I'll see you in the next video. And today we're going to start greeting people from Spain, because many people have complained that we never greet anyone from Spain, since nobody really writes to us in the comments. Greetings from Spain. Because we're also here, people write to us from the region they're watching us from. So, well, let's go by regions, by autonomous communities. We're going to start with Catalonia, although we've only received messages from Barcelona. If you're watching us from Ilada, Girona or Tarragona, please let us know. Let's start with Sylvia 2.6, who, well, is the first person we promised we would greet when we greet people from Spain. She writes to us a lot on Instagram and also here on the channel. So. Well, I think this greeting and this position of honor are well deserved. We also know that she has a furry family made up of Yoko, Mia and herself. So greetings to you, Silvia Ordonez. To Yoko and Mia too, who we know support us a lot on Instagram and on the channel. Greetings to you, Maria Martin Serato, with her cat Sticky, also sends us greetings from Barcelona. Greetings to you and Sticky. And Alex has also written to us, who is only nine years old, but who loves our channel and was asking us about his kitty Gizmo. Greetings to you, Alex. Well, and also to Gizmo, of course. And we also send greetings to the southern hemisphere. Okay, I know I haven't lost my mind and that Barcelona is still in the northern hemisphere, but a follower of ours, who calls himself the Southern hemisphere, sends us greetings from Barcelona. Greetings to you. And finally, we also want to greet Sol Guzman, who tells us that she collaborates with volunteers at a feline colony in Mundanet. Greetings to you, Sol. Well, these have been all the greetings we had for people from Barcelona. And if you're watching us from whichever city you're watching us from, from whichever country you're watching us from, or from whichever region of Spain you're watching us from, let us know in the comments, because we love to know where you're following us from and send you greetings. Greetings to everyone and see you next week. You've got me going. Of course, all this is improvised, so as for anyone. This comes after the fur coat. I'll say it again in full, in case I missed a sentence, like, at any cost. It's not said like, okay, how far up to here? Okay. No, always remember to aim the air towards the ceiling. The fly. But you can do a little bit for that. If you. The hairs, the cats. Let's see. And the environment. Right. The surroundings. If I didn't have to come to the park to record videos, I would spend the day lying there on the couch without doing anything.
