It features a monologue by Andres from TravelDoc explaining detailed recommendations and safety tips for transporting cats in carriers during long international trips, focusing on carrier size, hydration, security measures, and compliance with international regulations.
Hey, I'm Andres. I'm from traveldoc and today I'm going to explain how to set up a carrier for an international trip, usually long international trips, so that your cat can travel in the best possible conditions. First of all, you should know that if your cat is a large cat, we always recommend that the carriers be large enough for them to feel comfortable. Unfortunately, it's not like a dog. In the pet hotels that exist in Europe, in Frankfurt, in Amsterdam, we can take the dogs out of the carrier, right? In this case, the cat has to be in the carrier, which is why they have to be large carriers. It may seem excessively large, but for us it offers great peace of mind, since the animal, in this case the cat, will enjoy a pleasant trip in a large space. Foreign it's important for you to know that the carriers we buy usually include drinking fountains that are sometimes standard and depending on the animal, they can be very small. In this case, we recommend using drinking fountains for trips longer than 15 hours. What we want is for the cat to be drinking water at all times. It's harder for them to eat because they might feel stressed, but we'll give you a tip to help them feel less stressed. So the key is to put a carrier, or rather a drinking fountain, inside the carrier that's big enough to hold a certain amount of water, right? We know that there are cats that weigh up to 18kg. We know that these are very large cats, but that's what another type of drinking fountain is for. In this case, for a 7-8 kg cat. I think a drinking fountain like this one, you can see here, would work well. You should also know that we have to put a funnel on the outside of the gate. Why? Because we can't open the door under any circumstances. They might be stressed, they might be scared, and that could cause them to escape. Therefore, what we will do is put a funnel in the door so that water can be poured from the outside, and it always has water. You should also know that it is very important that in addition to the security measures it has when closing it, such as staples, the carrier must have screws. Screws are very important, since international ITA regulations require that all carriers carrying pets on international flights must have screw closures. Do not use only staples, since if a side impact occurs, whether it is life or something else, the staple could come loose and your carrier will open. To increase the security of the carrier, Travel Dock recommends that you put cable ties. Cable ties by attaching them to the open points on the carriers. And of course on the doors. Many carriers have holes on the doors above the grille so that you can attach the cable ties directly to the door. In any case, we recommend using four points. The four points ensure that the door, if opened for any reason, could come off its axis. The door will always remain secured.
