The content features a veterinarian named Carlos providing detailed advice on how to care for cats' paws and paw pads, including common problems, preventive care, and first aid tips. The video also includes some informal commentary from a second speaker, but the main focus is educational about feline paw health.
Although it may seem like it, because of this part of their body, our cats are not stuffed animals. And we have to take care of their paws too. Hello, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. Our feline companions. Paws are a very important part of their body. To begin with, they are their main weapons. You've probably experienced this at some point. On the other hand, they also act as their ID because they use them to spread their pheromones, which are substances that help identify parts of their home and also help other cats recognize them. They also help them regulate their temperature. Our cats do not sweat because they do not have sweat glands. The only part of a cat's body that can sweat are their paws. Have you ever counted how many toes your cat has on its paws? Well, if you have, you'll know that the front ones have five toes, but the back ones only have four. And if we zoom in a little more, look at their nails. Our cats have veins and nerves inside. That's why it can be very dangerous to cut this part too short, because we could cause them a lot of damage and cause them to bleed. That's why I always advise that if we cut our cat's nails, only the tips and don't be alarmed. If you ever see one of your cat's nails around your house, it's not that they've lost it permanently. Sometimes the surface layer of the nail comes off and stays there. And when you see it, you can be scared. But hey, it's completely normal. And with this, you can brag about your knowledge about cat paws in front of your cat friends. But I'm here to tell you how to take care of them. Let's start with some good news, that sometimes when you watch my videos, you end up alarmed. Normally, our cats paws are usually healthy, especially if they live indoors. Something different happens with cats that go outside who are exposed to many more dangers. Cuts, wounds, or even the ground outside, which is much rougher than the ground in our home. But even so, even if your cat lives exclusively indoors, you have to be careful because there are some substances that can be abrasive to their paws, such as household cleaners. Or if, for example, they climb on the stove and that area is still hot, it is normal for cats to come to the clinic that have ended up burning their pads by exploring the kitchen too much. Therefore, whether your cat goes outside or not, I have a suggestion for you. We are going to do regular inspections of their paws. Care for healthy paws we are going to do this routinely, every two or three weeks, and especially whenever you see that your cat complains about that part or even limps. I know this exercise requires a little training, because if you are an expert cat person, you will already know that cats do not usually like it when we touch their paws. Therefore, if we want to explore our cat's paws, we must have taught them a little beforehand that this does not pose any risk to them. Although it may give them a little creeps that we are going to touch them in this area, but we are doing it for their own good. Take advantage of your cat's relaxed attitude. For example, if they come to be petted when they are more or less calm, you can start touching that part of their body. And above all, a good time is when your cat is resting half asleep. At that moment, you can see their paws, explore all their toes and even pull out their nails. By applying a little pressure to this area, you will see the entire length of the nail. When you do this, you have to look at the health of their pads. That they are more or less smooth, pink, that there are no wounds, that they are not excessively dry. And also, when you look between their toes, make sure that there is nothing stuck in this area. You shouldn't see too much dirt on all the hairs between the toes. And especially if you see that the paw is very wet or that the cat even sucks on it very frequently, it should catch your attention. If you only notice that the pads are a little dry, you can try to moisturize them. There are specific products sold in veterinary clinics for the pads of both dogs and cats. They are non toxic products and even if our feline companion later goes to the toilet, nothing will happen to them. And if you want to make a more or less homemade moisturizer, you can also use cooking oils that you have at home. For example, extra virgin olive oil. To moisturize the pads, you can use a cotton ball or a cotton swab with a cotton tip and spread a thin film of oil over the pad, since the ointment takes a little while to absorb. Keep your cat under control during this time. And if your cat's paws are dirty and you're worried about their hygiene, you can wipe the pads and toes with a damp cloth just soaked in water. But please make sure the cloth isn't dripping wet, because otherwise your cat's paw will get too wet and that could cause fungus and bacteria to grow there and end up causing dermatitis in your cat. And of course, if you See that it's too wet. Dry it with a towel. Above all, you shouldn't use typical baby wipes because these wipes have soaps and scents that your cat might not like, and their ph may not even be recommended for your feline companion. And that's it for now. We've covered preventative care to keep your cat's paws healthy. Now let's see what we can do to solve the most common problems that our cats may have with their paws. Problems with their nails. Let's start by saying that these problems aren't as common in cats as they are in dogs. It is very common for dogs to get a nail stuck in their own paw padding, but it is not so common for cats because they usually use their claws, as I said before, to mark. That is why it is so important that you provide your cat with a scratching post or a scratching area at home and that you know what type your cat likes. If you do not know what I am talking about, we have talked about it in a video on the Happy Pets and Families Channel that I will leave in the description box. Well, in any case, it is important that you examine the nails and if you see that any of them are starting to get too long, just trim the tip to prevent the nail from turning around and digging into the flesh. Your cat licks its paws a lot. Generally, if our cat licks its paws a lot, it is because there is something that is bothering it. How are you going to know if it is too much or too little? Well, normal paw grooming is part of a cat's general grooming routine. While lying in the sun, they lick part of their body, reach their paws, open their toes, clean them well, and that's it. But if you see that the hair on your cat's paw is very wet and you see them there all day licking it, it is very likely that they are licking themselves more than they need to. Most of the time it is due to small wounds that they may have made on their pads. If they live with another cat, it may be that the other cat has bitten or scratched them and that is what is bothering them. But they may also have wounds from an object stuck in ah, I don't know if your cat uses silica sand in the litter box. Sometimes a grain of sand can get stuck in it or even due to infections that can occur in this area. Our cats little toes are not very well ventilated. They are full of hair. And if there is any part that remains very wet at some point, dermatitis can occur. Dermatitis in cats can be caused by bacteria or even fungi. If you notice that your cat's paw is not only very wet, but also has some type of secretion, and this secretion is light or even dark in color, do not ignore it because there is probably an infection. If you see that your cat insistently licks its paws, the first thing you have to do is put on an Elizabethan collar to torture your feline companion. Right? Have you ever seen your cat's tongue? It's just sandpaper. Your cat licking itself indicates that there is a problem and using its tongue will not solve it. On the contrary, it will make it worse. Thanks to the Elizabethan collar, you will be able to explore it much better without having to worry about it biting you. If you see any wounds during this examination, you can disinfect them. To do this, use gauze. Never. Cotton gauze doesn't leave fibers behind, whereas cotton does, and that can lead to complications. If you apply it to a wound, you can use an antiseptic. The antiseptic we usually use in the office is iodine or iodine containing solution. And you have to apply it straight from the bottle. No, you first have to dilute it with water or saline solution about halfway, and then rub it over the wound. Never, ever use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. After disinfecting the wound, do not cover it. Leave it open to air. Especially if your cat is still wearing the Elizabethan collar, which will not be able to see it. You should only cover the wound if you see a lot of bleeding, bleeding that won't stop. In those cases, apply a compressive bandage and take your cat to the vet as soon as possible. In any case, even if you have performed this first aid on your cat's paw, I always recommend that you make an appointment with the vet so that they can take a look at it. And if anything more advanced needs to be done, they can do it in the office so that you don't have to do any of it at home. While the above wasn't too important, fractures are generally much more complicated. Therefore, whenever you see that your cat can't walk, is in a lot of pain, has a very pronounced limb, or even has a very swollen paw, in those cases, you will always, always have to take it to the vet. Of course, please don't let a second go by and don't play doctor with your cat. And with this, you have more or less covered all the care that a cat usually needs for its paws. Luckily, it is not very common for our cats to injure this part of their body. But I thought it was important to show you so that you at least know what to do at home. And now in the comments, tell me if your feline companion has ever had any problems with their paws or if on the contrary, you have never paid attention to taking care of this area. And since there is nothing left for me to do but say goodbye, give the video a like if you enjoyed it and subscribe to the channel if you haven't already. Maria Eva, thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel. And I'll see you in the next video. Please don't let me down.
Done. If there's a part that your cat uses, that's it. I know you don't like it. The bad thing about this light is that the background changes now and then I have to correct it in post production. It's a drag. Oh, problems with his nails. Oh, oh, oh, oh. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Ah, ah, ah. What torture. Don't you remember that when we watched El Chavo Lu and so on and so forth, they called it a palette. You're missing a couple of little pigtails. They're like fun facts. Oh, please. Do they have these functions or something like that or. I don't know what I said. Well, with this you can win the trivia quiz. No, no, no, no. We always say that. Okay, well, these are just curiosities. This could be quite a filler. Honestly, I can't. I fell asleep a lot. Where's the dog? They're all cats. Oh, yeah, there's a dog here. Well, Carlos, show is over, right? I don't know if it's over. I feel awful. Right? Man, I don't know that sometimes people get alarmed when they see the videos. Right? Let's give it a go. I don't know. You know, I'm going to make this up. A little bit of a response. Give it a little bit, even if it. Gives it a little bit, even if it. And how do you feel? Like that? No, but it's not like I'm in.
A delivery room, right? But here, you squeeze it down here. I think it's worse, right?
