Hi, guys. I'm Adrian from our loyal friend. I'm a veterinary student and blogger. In today's video, we're going to explain what the barf diet is and make you a recipe. We're increasingly interested in our own nutrition, but also in that of our animals. Recently, the barf diet has begun to be used as a feeding model for dogs and cats. Many of you have heard of it, others haven't, so we want to clear up any doubts you may have. The barf diet stands for biologically appropriate root food. It consists of restoring the natural diet that dogs would have in the wild, offering raw, unprocessed foods. The barf diet should mainly consist of four types of meaty bones, meat and fish, organ meats and vegetables and fruits. Meaty bones are the source of calcium in the diet, and as the name suggests, they must be meaty. That is, they must be well covered in meat, and it is very important that they are. Raw meat and fish provide protein, and this must be varied. Organ meats provide vitamins, and that is why it is very important not to exceed the percentage, as this could create a problem of hypervitaminosis. Fruits and vegetables provide vitamins, antioxidants and fiber. As facultative or opportunistic carnivores, dogs can also obtain certain benefits from foods that are not of animal origin. How much of a total ration should we give? This is one of the questions that usually concerns us the most. The good thing about bars of food is that we can individually adapt the type of food to each individual based on their needs. But it is true that there will be certain percentages within which we will operate. The approximate percentages will start at 2% of the ideal live weight for sedentary and neutered dogs, up to 3 to 4% for mini breeds, greyhounds, or dogs with a higher energy demand. This does not mean that if your dog is sedentary, you should give it 2%. We should always individualize the ration for each case, and it does not have to be 2 or 3. It could be 2.8, 3.2. The ideal percentage will be that in which your animal neither gains nor loses weight. Then we will have the correct percentage. Bacteria and parasites are one of the issues that most concern us when we talk about this type of diet. Since we are talking about raw foods, it is very important to buy from places suitable for human consumption, that are local, that are very clean and hygienic in their preparation, and above all, and very importantly, to freeze. Freezing kills parasites and it is advisable to have a freezer of less than 20 grams at home, depending on the type of parasite. We need more or less freezing time, but a week is fine. Bacteria do not die when frozen, but their growth is stopped. That is why it is very important not to break the cold chain and to freeze food once you have prepared it. This way we reduce the bacterial load. In addition to the fact that dogs have an acidic pH of 1.5 C in their stomachs which prepares them to destroy most bacteria. In addition, they have a short digestive system compared to omnivores which prepares them so that if any bacteria remain after freezing and have passed through the stomach, they can be eliminated without causing disease. All of this is always talking about dogs in good health and who do not have any type of pathology. What are the benefits of the BART diet? There are many benefits, but I would highlight five very important ones. The first and number one is that we will see less voluminous stools and this is due to the diet.
