Diferencias entre ESTERILIZAR y CASTRAR | Perros y Gatos

This is a YouTube video titled "Diferencias entre ESTERILIZAR y CASTRAR | Perros y Gatos" created on June 5, 2019. It features Misha Ruiz, a veterinarian at Privet Hospitals in Madrid, explaining the differences between sterilization and castration in dogs, cats, and other species. The video covers surgical methods, hormonal effects, benefits, risks, and advice for pet owners regarding these procedures.
Hello. Good morning. I'm Misha Ruiz. I'm one of the veterinarians at Privet Hospitals. We have two centers, one in the center of Madrid in the Luce neighborhood, and the other in Villalbiciosa Dohdan. Today we're going to record a video for the Experto Animal Channel. And in this case we're going to talk about the difference between castration and sterilization. Although both methods result in the animal becoming infertile, there are differences both in terms of surgery and hormones. For dogs, cats and other species, the terms are the same. There's a lot of confusion. On the one hand, sterilization means that the animal can't reproduce. Again, we keep their hormones intact. In the case of males, we would use techniques that would prevent sperm from being eliminated via the penis. And in the case of females, what we would do is prevent the ovaries, despite producing these eggs, from reaching the uterus. Eggs and sperm would never coincide in the same physical space. So pregnancy could never occur. But these females and males would continue to have hormones, which means that there would be no behavioral changes in terms of having or not having heat. The females would bleed. We would not have the benefits of eliminating or reducing the risk of breast tumors. The females could continue to have pseudo pregnancies. In the case of males, we would not control aggression or in any way modify behaviors linked to hormones. They would continue to mark and other types of associated things. Castration. Castration is the surgical method in which we remove, in the case of males, the testicles. In the case of females, the ovaries and the ovaries and uterus would be, in the case of males, an orchectomy. In the case of females, it would be an ovaryectomy if we only remove the ovaries, or an ovario hysterectomy if we remove all the reproductive tissue. These techniques involve surgery either using minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy or traditional techniques. It is true that general anesthesia is involved. It is also true that the animals must undergo surgery with the risks that this entails. They will have a series of post operative care procedures which which by the way, you can review on our channel where we have a video about this. They will also require a series of medications and check ups. Benefits and risks are complicated issues depending on each specific case. My advice is to ask your veterinarian what is most suitable for you. What does your pet need? How can you help your pet? Be a healthy member of the family with fewer health risks is a very personal matter. Perhaps as a general rule in the clinic what we do is castrations, because what we are interested in is controlling that they do not reproduce more. But above all, what we are interested in is eliminating hormones, because these are animals that if they are not of high reproductive lineage, do not need those hormones for absolutely anything in their day to day life. And as a rule, they harm them more than they help them. We hope you enjoyed this video. Remember that you have more videos on the Experto Animal channel. In any case, you can also check our social networks Privet Veterinary Hospital. You can find us on Instagram and on.
