Still don't know the story of Sam the Unsinkable Cat. Although he was also known as Oscar, this cat became famous because he survived the sinking of three military ships in battle. All this happened during World War II. Do you want to know all the details? Then stay tuned to find out the whole story. Cats as Sailors Ever since humans decided to start sailing thousands of years ago, there has always been a place for cats. And the thing is, felines were a great help. They helped protect the food and other equipment on the ship, scaring away rats and other animals. In addition, thanks to this, they prevented diseases. But not only that, they also kept sailors company who spent a lot of time at sea. This is how the story of our protagonist begins. A black and white cat who lived numerous adventures aboard several ships. The first shipwreck the first ship this cat sailed on was the German battleship Bismarck. All the sailors on this ship called the cat Oscar and this was his name for a time. After a great naval battle between the British and the Germans, the Bismarck sank on May 27, 1941. Of a crew of 2,200 men, only a little over 100 managed to survive. But these were not the only ones who survived. Oscar the cat was found floating on a plank and was picked up by the enemy, the British. The second shipwreck, Oscar boarded the HMS Cossack and his British crew, not knowing his name, decided to call him Sam and make him the ship's mascot. This ship was dedicated to escorting buoys in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean. It was during one of these escort duties that it was bombed by a German submarine near Gibraltar. They tried to transfer the crew to another ship, but due to the initial explosion, a total of 159 men died. Once again, Sam survived this event and was rescued and taken to Gibraltar. The third shipwreck at this point, Sam was nicknamed the Unsinkable Sam and was transported to the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal. This time was no different as on November 14th of the same year, the ship was torpedoed while returning to the island of Malta. There were several attempts to tow it, but it was not possible, so it ended up sinking. Fortunately, all but one of the crew members were saved. Once again, Sam survived this event and was found floating on a plank in a motorboat. Sam's retirement after his third shipwreck, the Feline passed through two other ships, the HMS Legion and the HMS Lighting. Both ended up sinking in 1942 and 1943 respectively. After living all these adventures, Sam was taken to the United Kingdom to spend the rest of his life with a sailor from Belfast. There she lived out her last years until she died in 1955. A portrait of this brave cat can currently be seen in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. What did you think of this story?
