El misterio de LOS GATOS 😸 y los ESPACIOS CUADRADOS IMAGINARIOS 📦 explicado ✨🤓

This is a YouTube video titled "El misterio de LOS GATOS 😸 y los ESPACIOS CUADRADOS IMAGINARIOS 📦 explicado ✨🤓" created in February 2025. It features a veterinarian named Carlos explaining feline behavior related to cats' attraction to square shapes and illusory outlines, such as taped squares on the floor or cardboard boxes, which provide them a sense of security and comfort. The video discusses scientific studies, cat resting habits, and behavioral insights, aimed at cat owners and enthusiasts.
Let me suggest an experiment. Make a square on the floor of your house with prominent adhesive tape and watch how your cat behaves. Most of our feline companions get inside without resisting. Do you know why? Hi, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. Were you surprised by the vat tape? Well, the fact is that it has to do with the fact that our cats like to sleep inside a cardboard box on top of a laptop or on top of the dirty clothes basket. Most of these structures or things or objects have a square shape that, well, cats usually like to take a short nap. It has been shown in several studies that these types of square shapes give our cats a sense of security. And in fact, not long ago, a new study was done that made it a little more complicated. Instead of drawing a complete square, all they did was draw the corners in a specific shape called the Kaniza outline. What's special about it and what you're seeing on the screen right now is that using circles in the shape of a corner, the cat is made to look like that formed the square outline. And most of our feline companions also like to get inside. We've tried it with an artichoke putting a square on the floor. And the truth is that sometimes it does get inside and stays inside as if it were contained between walls. The researchers who have been conducting these studies call these illusory outlines. Our feline companions can imagine the walls that would be in those outlines that we draw for them, as if those walls provided them with an environment of tranquility and peace. It's true that these studies are still in their infancy because very little research has been done. But it seems that this is a behavior that our cats often repeat. So if you want to replicate this at home, try drawing a contrasting square on the floor with tape so that your cat can identify it. Or if you want to do it exactly as they did in the study, well, I'll leave it linked below in the description box so you can check out how they did it in case you want to replicate it. That's why we can learn from these studies that our cats like these small surfaces, usually square shaped, because that gives them a certain sense of well being. There are many ways to explain this type of behavior in cats, which I think is quite interesting. And the truth is that if we think about how our cats live in nature, they often have to seek shelter when they feel insecure. That shelter is usually small and narrow. If it can cover them completely, all the Better our cat knows that its rear is well protected and that a potential enemy can only approach it from the front so it can defend itself. Another theory as to why our cats like these, well, square, closed, small and narrow outlines is because, as you already know, our feline companions spend many hours of the day resting, lounging, if not sleeping, up to 16 and 18 hours a day. And precisely when our cat is dozing or sleeping, it is less alert to what is happening around it. If it is in a place that it can perfectly control and that it knows has protected and sheltered, it is easier for it to rest. Much better. But leaving these studies aside, there are some explanations that we can also give to why our feline companions sleep in slightly strange places. For example, the case of cardboard boxes. In addition to meeting these characteristics, they are square, they are small, and our cat almost never enters them. Cardboard attracts a lot of attention to all cats in general. It is perhaps because of the smell it has. In fact, it is very common to see that when our cat finds something made of cardboard at home, it immediately tries to scratch or nibble on it, playing around with the object a little. But the fact that the cat sleeps inside a cardboard box also gives it a certain advantage, because cardboard is a good insulator. So when it is cold, it is a good way to stay warm, and so is ours. Cats tend to adopt that donut shape inside boxes. This also helps them maintain their internal heat. In fact, another study that I have linked below has also shown that cats, for example, that live in shelters feel much safer if there are cardboard boxes in their environment. Shelter boxes. These cats will also adapt much better to a change of environment. For example, when they come to our house, if we put a cardboard box for them. Well, our cat does not only prefer cardboard boxes, sometimes they get into some places in our house that we find curious. For example, inside the sink, or the sink in this case, if the cardboard was a good insulator, the sink is a good refresher. That's why it's common to find cats that choose these locations in the hottest summer months. Why? Well, because again, their shape kind of protects them, kind of takes care of them, which they like, and it's also a surface that helps them get a little less heat. And what happens when our cat sleeps on top of our computer? Okay, I don't need to tell you about the square shape again. But in addition to that, our cat is drawn to this particular device because we spend a lot of time with it. And so it says, hey, if it's something important, to my human, it's probably also important to me. In addition, there's another factor that we can't overlook. When the computer is on, it emits heat. And with our cats being so cold, it's normal for them to go to it to warm up a bit. And regarding other somewhat unusual places where our cats can rest, such as backpacks, sports bags, or the laundry basket, there is also an explanation, because backpacks or gym bags smell very strongly of us. Our cats like our smell. It comforts them. They know that we are trustworthy humans with whom they feel safe. And it is very common for them to actually sleep in things that smell like us to feel closer to their favorite humans. In fact, for example, Kipchofo loves to climb over my gym clothes and roll around in them. It's all because of the smell. And for example, in the case of Alcatofo, since we are talking about him, so that he does not bother us and we did not show him in the video, there is a behavior that he has repeated a lot, which is sleeping inside planters that we have placed on the windows. I had to remove the plants that were in that planter because he crushed them. But the explanation is exactly the same. He feels contained within those walls, and the planter is in a place that he finds pleasant. He can see little birds, he can get some sun, and he is quite comfortable there. That is why for most cats, it is usually a good choice to choose, for example, covered beds, because they tend to like them. Another thing is that later on, due to the smell, when they come from the factory, they may reject them at first. But if they start to smell us and we put a blanket of theirs so that they recognize it as part of their home, it is very common for them to use them. Although, of course, this depends a bit on the personal taste, so to speak, of each cat. However, if our cats have started to develop a somewhat strange behavior when sleeping, that can set off a little alarm bell, because it could be that something is happening to our cat that we have not noticed. In fact, for example, it is very common for some cats that are very, very sick to decide to sleep in their litter box. Obviously, it doesn't mean that a cat that sleeps inside its litter box is always sick, but if we see this behavior, we should at least observe our cat and if necessary, take it to the vet to have it checked out, because there. Well, it's true that it may feel a little contained and safe, but the truth is that most healthy cats don't like to sleep where they poop. Many times when they exhibit this behavior, as I said, it's because of some illness. For example, because they're very weak or because their paws hurt, they have arthritis pain and can't move, they prefer to rest there. But if instead of using the litter box, which is a specific example, you see that your cat, for example, rests a lot in some nook in some inaccessible area of the house that it hardly leaves there, uh, that, well, it has become a little more elusive many times that is related to stress. They do not want to leave that area because they feel protected there. As, as I said before, it is their refuge. They have everything under control. And there is something in our house that has made them lose balance. They feel that their is no longer as safe as before. In addition, there are some cats that adopt slightly different resting positions depending on how they feel regarding, for example, stress or the safety of the environment. For example, if they spend a lot of time in a bread like position with all four paws resting on the ground and staring at a point that is keeping them alert and looking at something that they don't trust completely so they can run away if things get ugly, or also when they sit down and wrap their tail around their body, in this case, they feel uncomfortable, for example, in the presence of someone. If you want to know a little more about these types of postures and what they mean for our cats, we'll leave you a very interesting video below that we made here on the channel so you can check it out. And finally, on the subject of resting, you should also note that sometimes your cat changes their favorite resting spots because, well, it simply has to do with the time of year. I'm sure you can give me a lot of examples of interesting places where your cat likes to rest. And well, they more or less resort to this, of looking for a safe and sheltered area with a square outline. Because after that, each cat, well, is a bit like its father and mother and has specific tastes. Above all, cats begin to choose different resting areas that are increasingly exposed when they feel more comfortable in their environment. Some cats at first prefer to sleep inside cupboards or even continue using their carrier because they feel it is a safe area. But then they start to move away little by little. It is more likely to find them on beds, on chairs or on the sofa. But above all, the most important thing is that your cat has a safe place where it chooses to sleep. If your cat likes to sleep under a bed, because it always does so, and that's it, well, perfect. There is no problem. As long as you see that the rest of your cat's behavior with you on a day to day basis at home is normal, that it is friendly, that it continues to let itself be seen, or that it even approaches the people in the house. There are some cats that are a little more shy. Above all, the most important thing is that you don't notice any radical changes in this type of behavior. That is what can indicate that our cat is finding it a little difficult to live together. And that is why it ends up choosing slightly more reserved areas. And the cat. Did you know that your feline counterparts like illusory environments or outlines? Well, if you didn't know, like the cat, you should probably leave me a comment so I can find out and try it at home. Put the little square on the floor to see if your cat chooses it, and of course, tell me after you do the test. In any case, if you liked the video, you know that you can give us a like and remember to subscribe if you haven't already. If you also want to support us even more, you can give us a super thank you. And also remember that we have a secondary channel here on YouTube called Questions and Answers from a Veterinarian. Come on over and take a look. And don't leave yet, because we're going to meet this little guy who's curled up in a ball. His name is Wero, and he greets us with his human companion, Mari de la Rosa. Here's Freya, the cat. She greets us with her human companion, Laura Rivera from Bogota with Yuki, the black kitten and Ryu, the Siamese, who greet us with his human companions, Joy and Rodri from Argentina. Thank you very much for following the channel. Happy pets and families and illusory contours. And we'll see you in the next video. It doesn't come in. What now? What do I do now? If you're leaning over there, kitty, look over there. The camera is over there. There, There. Yes. For example. Well, when they have. For example, when they're very weak, they have. For example. Of course, yes. I didn't want to say it. If you want to know a little bit more about the subject, I made a video for you not long ago here on the channel. Right? Not long ago. No, quite a while ago. If it's warmer, it's more likely that they'll rest near heat sources. Logically. Right, Sorry. That's why I said the box thing, because a square structure is like. But also. Well, it's. I mean, it's likely that with the change of seasons, they change there. But don't ruin my experiment, because I'm doing science. Okay? And now let's see what it does. I made you a short video because we said we wanted a short video.
