Welcome back to Animal Expert. In today's video, we're going to explain the characteristics of the Jack Russell Terrier. The Jack Russell Terrier dog breed originated in the United Kingdom at the hands of the Reverend John Russell. Driven by his love of fox hunting and his adoration for Terrier type dogs, the shepherd focused on breeding and crossbreeding different dogs, resulting in the birth of the Jack Russell Terrier and the Parson Russell Terrier. The breed was finally developed in Australia. According to the official breed standard, the Jack Russell Terrier measures 25 to 30 centimeters tall at the withers and weighs between 5 and 6 kilogram. The hair on its coat is short and hard, although it can vary in appearance and appear smooth or brittle. As both types of hair are accepted by the Jack Russell Terrier, the base color, and therefore the predominant color, must always be white. Spots usually appear on it that can be black or tan, regardless of the shades of the latter. Like many dogs bred for hunting, the Jack Russell has a temperamental, hard working, bold, fearless, curious, very active and always alert character. It is also intelligent, very loyal and brave. Despite its small size, if properly socialized, it can become very friendly, fun and sociable. Being so energetic and active, it loves to play, so if you have children or younger siblings, it can become their ideal companion. As it is a small breed dog, the Jack Russell is ideal for living in small flats as well as in larger apartments and houses. It adapts to all spaces as long as it has a minimum amount of exercise per day. Ideally, the Jack Russell Terrier should be taken out for a walk three or four times a day, following a fixed schedule and offering it the same intensity of exercise each day within the number of outings. Two of them should be dedicated to more leisurely walks and the other two to offering it at least an hour of exercise. Regarding other care, the Jack Russell Terrier does not require anything more specific. We will have to bathe it once a month or when we consider that it is dirty, taking the opportunity to clean its ears following the instructions of the veterinarian. On the other hand, we will have to brush it twice a week and increase the brushing times during shedding season with a soft carding brush for short hair and moistening all its fur beforehand to avoid breaking the hair. We will also keep its nails in perfect condition and empty its anal glands regularly. Proper training is essential to ensure that it is a balanced and healthy dog. Failure to train it properly can lead to the Jack Russell becoming unstable and very difficult to control. Therefore, it is not recommended for Novice owners as it requires owners experienced in dog training and education. They must know how to remain firm and guide the temperament of this breed of dog. We will start training the Jack Russell from Puppyhood. So, after choosing the best name for him, the first thing we will have to teach him is to come when called. And when the dog is able to go outside, we will begin socialization and start training him to walk calmly without running away or stressing about discovering everything at once. As he is a curious and active dog, it is important that we dedicate time to his walks, let him sniff and play. Once the dog has learned to come when called, we can start working on the rest of the basic commands, such as sitting, lying down or staying still. Of course, we will not carry out training sessions that exceed 15 minutes. The best way to train him is through positive reinforcement. Although the Jack Russell Terrier is a strong and incredibly healthy breed of dog, which can save us many visits to the vet if we give him the exercise he needs and an adequate diet, it is also true that there are a number of pathologies, especially hereditary ones, that are more common than others in him. The most common health problems in Jack Russell dogs are the terrier ataxia, and this involves lack of coordination, difficulty walking and even standing. Patellar luxation occurs when the patella, a bone located just in front of the knee joint, moves, causing pain and therefore difficulty walking. Lens luxation. This occurs when the lens is not attached to the eye through the zonular fibers and therefore moves and moves from its natural position. Deafness problems with the Jack Russell's auditory system are usually closely related to ataxia, although they can also appear in isolation as a result of age. In addition to the diseases and disorders mentioned, if the Jack Russell is not exercised, it will end up developing stress, anxiety or depression. If it has any abnormality, whether physical or mental, it is advisable to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Thank you very much for watching this video.
