Veterinarian Carlos explains how you might be spoiling your cat without realizing it. The video covers excessive affection, overfeeding, and behavioral problems that result, plus how to set healthy boundaries and routines that actually improve your relationship with your cat.
Foreign. Have you ever wondered if you're spoiling your cat too much? If you haven't, I think you should. Hi, I'm Carlos and I'm a veterinarian and this is Alcacho Foe. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. I'm sure you also adore your cat. You give them lots of kisses, hugs, cuddles, affection and cuddles. But have you ever wondered if this is benefiting them? When we talk about spoiling our cats, we can understand it from two points of view. On the one hand, giving them too many treats, too many treats. Always being aware when they meow to run to see what's wrong with them, or waking up at five in the morning to feed them. Or on the other hand, giving them too much physical contact. Kisses, hugs, picking them up off the floor, taking them for a little walk around your house in your arms. Well, all those things. And of course, there is a very fine line between giving our cats what they need to live their lives to the fullest, to have everything they need, like having your home cat friendly so that your cat doesn't lack for anything, and going overboard. For example, regarding physical contact, we should kiss and hug our cats. The first thing we need to understand is that they don't see this type of activity in the same way that we do. At first they don't see it as a display of affection because they don't do it with each other. In their inter cat relationships, so to speak. There is nothing that resembles kissing and hugging. Even mutual licking or nuzzling cannot be considered a form of kissing between cats, because for them it is a way of indicating who is higher and lower in the social hierarchy. The cat that does and nuzzles is the dominant cat. But of course, all this changes a lot when our cats live with us in a close relationship in our home. Because it is possible that over time they can learn that this is a form of affection from us towards them, especially for everything that comes later. Generally, we don't just give them a kiss or a cuddle, but we also pet them. We make them feel comfortable, and that is why they can see it as a positive attitude. But in principle, when you come and say to your cat, oh kitty, how I love you. Well, for them it is neither here nor there. That is why we can see two groups of cats, some that enjoy that moment, purr, feel comfortable, and even return that display of affection in ways that they do, such as nudging you with their heads, rubbing against you. Or some may even imitate us by Licking you. On the other hand, there is another group of cats that do not take it well at all. These cats usually get quite tense when we approach them and put our arms around them. Even if they don't leave the place, they can start showing signs of being upset, like, well, I'm not very, very comfortable. They flatten their ears, straighten their whiskers, move their head away, push you away with their paw. In those cases, you're telling yourself, hey, look human, leave me alone for a bit. If you want, pet me a little here under the cheeks. I love it. You save those signs of affection for your hometown, which you haven't seen in a long time. So. Well, if we see that our cat responds affectionately to our kisses and hugs, well, yes, we can do it. But logically, within limits, we can't spend all day giving the cat kisses. Why? Because we're going to start bothering them in their daily and routine activities. If you arrive and always wake your feline companion from their naps to give them kisses and hugs, hey, maybe they won't find it funny. On the other hand, if you live with one of those cats that prefers to keep its distance, then in those cases it's better not to do it at all. That's why we can understand that there are a series of pros and cons when it comes to pampering our cats. For example, something that is very good for our relationship with our feline companion is close contact so that they get used to us. But only in the case that the cats tolerate and endure it, that they have that type of cat like nature and intrinsic personality, that they are more sociable cats, that they are not so elusive or grumpy cats. Well, it's not a bad thing that we want to give our feline companion the best at all times, because at the end of the day we are going to be more aware of all the needs that our cat has in its day to day life. And also as I mentioned in that video where I told you that you had to treat your cat as if it were your child, you will be much more aware of its problems, for example health problems, when it has some type of behavior that is not normal, when perhaps it is necessary to take it to the vet. This type of attitude regarding pampering, well, we always consider our cat as a member of the family, which is something positive. However, as always, there is a negative side, which is when we cross that fine line that I mentioned before. If we, for example, are constantly bothering our cat when it is resting, well over time if it does not like it, we will cause its routines to change. And when. Before, it was safe and confident sleeping on the sofa. Now perhaps it prefers to sleep under a bed because you are not going to approach it to give it lots of kisses and hugs. In that case, it is being a very annoying person. Hey, I understand that I'm the first one who feels like doing it with the cat. But we also have to be aware that we must respect their space. Also, sometimes some cats really like that contact so much so that they end up, well, getting hooked, becoming addicted. And that means that your cats will be demanding your attention all the time. There will be no boundaries at all. Your cat won't care if you're taking a nap or resting at night. They'll wake you up at 5 in the morning if they want you to pet them or give them some kind of caress, and especially if they also want you to give them food. And this brings us to the next con. Many cats end up getting fat with this exaggerated petting. If we as humans can't set those limits, every time our cat asks us for something, we'll fill their bowl and they'll always have a feast ahead of them. You're giving your cat food as a reward for getting your attention. And many more eating disorders. For example, there are some cats that will only eat if their hand is in front of them, if you are looking at them. And many of your followers have told me this in comments and direct messages. Hey, how do I get my cat to eat if I am not petting them? Hey, my cat will only eat if I am next to them. What we are creating is an over dependence on you and the cat because they cannot do any activity without you being there. And you will agree with me that many times this comes from over pampering and excessive attention gone wrong. And with the whole food thing, which lasts us a long time, we can also find another big, but another big downside to pampering our cats, which is that, for example, they only want to eat certain foods. If we give them their dry food, which is neither here nor there, and they leave it lying around in the feeder because they know that we are going to give them a can later because the poor thing doesn't do anything well, in the end they are going to learn that type of behavior and they are going to repeat it over and over again. And of course all this ends up leading to the big problem that our cats suffer, which is frustration and stress. Why? Well, because if at some point we have not learned to Break that, well, that vicious circle that their diet has become, for example, and we do not give them the food they want, then our cat can become stressed and can start to develop a lot of abnormal, strange behaviors derived from that same stress. For example, marking aggression, separation anxiety. And this is something that I am telling you not only as a veterinarian, but, but also as someone who is suffering from it at this very moment, because where you see the adorable and cute little dog in the videos, he is also very, very persistent. For example, lately we have been having this problem with the automatic feeder. This summer we decided that in order to better control his rations, the best thing was an automatic programmable feeder. And, well, I decided to put one on him. I was quite determined, honestly. However, he came along and said, I'll only eat the devilish thing if I have no other choice. And he always looks for a lot of tricks to avoid trying a bite of that dish. Where before he would share the issue of feeding himself from his bowl and the feeding pellet in the feeder. This activity pellet that we have put on him, the green pellet. Now he always prefers to go to the green pellet, tap it with his paw, eat every last grain, and then when he gets really hungry, if necessary, he goes to the automatic feeder. And since he knows that we put part of his food there every night, he waits because he knows that there will be some time in the day when there will be something. And so he very rarely eats from his automatic feeder. My strategy was very simple. Well, one night we don't put his ration in the ball, so he has no choice but to eat from the automatic feeder bowl that is overflowing. But here comes the biggest problem when we pamper our cats too much, which is when the family doesn't all row in the same direction. In this case, for example, Jose didn't let me because he was very sorry that the cat would be left without his foodball. Because at that moment, the cat was also doing his demonstration show, pawing at him like this, kind of taciturn with walking the ball around the whole living room. And Jose said, oh, come on, let's put a little bit. So the little guy has learned that there will always be something in the ball, because if not, he will start carrying the ball around the whole house. And I, well, I more or less stick to my 13. But Jose is incapable and always ends up putting something in it. So the time has come for negotiation. I had to come to an agreement with Yosh. I told him, okay, okay, keep putting A little bit in the little ball. It entertains him a lot, and he likes to eat from it. But instead of giving him the whole amount that we usually give him, the whole portion, we've only given him a portion quote. And so, although the method is being a little slower than I would have liked, we are achieving some results, of course, because at home, there are often people who go to the vets with their feline companion. And there the vet, who are people without any kind of heart, tells you, no, you have to do this, and you have to stay firm and straight, because if you don't, your cat is not going to learn that pattern and so on. But of course, that person returns home very aware. And the problem is when the rest of the family members are not so committed to what the vet has said, because our cats tend to be quite stubborn, and it takes a lot of effort, really. I mean, you have to work for quite a few days for them to end up learning some kind of new thing. But of course, on top of that, you also have to worry about it. You see that your cat looks at you. He's kind of sad. He says, oh, human, seriously, you're going to leave me feeling this hungry? And in the end, of course, it ends up succumbing. And with this. Well, it takes me a little bit to the next part of the video. What can we do if our cat is already very spoiled? If we have crossed the line, is it spoiled forever? Or is there any chance of getting it back on track? Well, as always, I bring you a message of hope. Yes, we can change our cat's behavior again. Although, as I'm telling you, it's not going to be an easy task. It's not going to be a quick task above all. And the first thing you have to do is talk to all the members of the family to understand what the situation is in which you find yourself. And above all, understand that the benefit that we are going to provide our cat is going to be immense. It is going to require a lot of effort from us, but for him, it is going to be the best solution. For example, this happened to us at the beginning when the puppy arrived home. If you follow us on the channel, you already know he was a cat that was very attached to us from the very beginning and demanded our attention all the time. Of course, I. At that moment, when he was meowing and meowing all the time at night, he wouldn't shut up and wouldn't stop. I told jose, jose, please, we have to resist. Because if not this is going to become a real howl. He's going to learn that behavior and he's going to keep repeating it throughout his life. As you know, it was quite a hard and long task and I had to put up with a lot of comments, not only from Jose, who, poor thing, just did what I told him to do, but also from many people who told me, no. The cat meows because he needs another little brother. And the cat, I don't know how much. In other words, they always gave you all sorts of alternatives, instead of trusting the process and saying, if I take away the attention, the cat will learn that with that meowing he won't achieve anything, and in the end he will stop doing it. And just one aside, if you don't know what I'm talking about, it's not all about taking away the attention. I've explained this on the channel and I'll leave you a series of videos below. If your cat is one of those that meows all the time and gets very insistent. But anyway, we followed these types of guidelines. And I can tell you, because we've had the cat at home for over a year now, that after a few months that behavior disappeared. And today, Today he is a super calm cat when it comes to meowing. He doesn't meow at you if he doesn't think it's necessary to communicate with you, like sometimes to ask for food, or when you come home from the street to greet you and things like that. Next strategy. Establish routines. It's super important. I consider it essential. Why? Well, because when we have pampered our feline companion too much, we have destabilized his livelihood, his environment. For example, we haven't let him enjoy his naps because we were waking him up to give him hugs and kisses. So if we go back to maintaining his routines, in which we let our cat sleep peacefully for the 16 hours of nothing that he does during the day, well, little by little, for example, he will regain his confidence, let himself be seen more, and will start to sleep in a more exposed area more in view of everyone. If he is one of those cats that has become a bit shy, or also, for example, your cat will learn that you don't want to bother him. He has to wake up at night because he will understand that you are not going to get up to give him food or pet him. Of course, at first it will be hard because he will wake you up, but you have to count on it. Another super important thing is to avoid punishment, punishing your feline companion is absolutely useless. Instead, you have to focus and concentrate on not reinforcing the habits he has acquired. For example, if your cat, as I said, meows at you during the day and you run to see what is wrong, or you fill his bowl with food, you are reinforcing him. But often just a little caress or a word is enough to reinforce it. And be careful. Sometimes the behavior can be very, very annoying and will force you to look. For example, when we didn't pay much attention to the cat at night, there was a time when he started scratching the base of the box spring where the mattress is placed. In these cases, for example, what you have to do is interrupt the activity, but without addressing the cat. A small noise, like a clap, that the cat can't identify with our voice, so that it comes out of that scratching loop. And as I always tell you here on the channel, I approach it like this from a broad perspective. But if you have a specific case, a very difficult case where you've tried absolutely everything for a reasonable amount of time, two days aren't enough and you haven't made any progress, you haven't seen that it has changed for the better. In any case, in these situations, it's best to go to a specialist veterinarian, a feline behavior athologist, so that they can guide you and advise you specifically on your case. The most important thing is that if you implement these guidelines that usually work, you'll see small changes for the better. If you see small changes, trust me, trust the process, you're on the right track. Hi, I'm Carlos, I'm a veterinarian and I'm always going to put you in the worst situations. But having said all that kissing and hugging our cats, as long as they don't mind, doesn't have to be negative at all. And above all, pampering them and being attentive to them them and treating them like the kings of the house. As long as we respect some limits, we'll bring many positive things to our coexistence, especially because it can greatly strengthen our bond. Well, now tell me what you think. Is your feline companion cuddly and pampered? Do you keep him in your house as if he were an emperor? Well, tell me in the comments, because I'm sure you do. In any case, if you like the video, give it a like, share it with lots of people, and also subscribe to the channel if you haven't already subscribed. If you want to support us a lot, a lot, give us a super thank you do it with this little face, please. And before we go, we meet this beautiful little one called E.B. who lives with her human companion, Juan Camilo. Over here we have little Boey, who looks like quite a troublemaker. He lives with his human companion, Elisa. And to say goodbye we have Odin, the black kitten, and Loki, the cow kitten, who live with their human companion, Sandra, thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel. And we'll see you in the next video next week. Don't forget, we've been working hard in this house lately. A lot, a lot. The fight can never ever fail. Today I'm dressed in brown, almost like the puppy. Look at those little ducks. Uh huh. It was a knowing wink. But since I can't give a knowing wink. Well, that's it. Come on, Allah, let's go. Come down. He starts walking the little ball around the house. And I, well, I more or less stay at my 13. But Jose is incapable and always ends up putting something in it because it's empty. This kitty is a spoiled child. We talked about the automatic feeder and he ends up eating to give us a pat on the nose. Pampering our cats, giving them kisses, giving them hugs, being aware of what they need in the end. Oh no. Kissing our cats and hugging them. I don't know what face I ended up with, with the. That I have. Look at this little coin face. My little kitty, little cat. My little cat, little cat.
