The content is an informative presentation about the dietary needs of guinea pigs, focusing on recommended fruits and vegetables, feeding tips, and general care advice to ensure proper nutrition and health for guinea pigs.
The guinea pig, Cavia porcelace, is a herbivorous rodent that feeds mainly on eno, a dried legume that ensures the essential supply of fiber and is also essential for intestinal mobility. Apart from pellets that should be offered in moderation, the guinea pig requires an external supply of vitamin C through the consumption of fruits and vegetables, since it is not capable of synthesizing it on its own. In this new video from Animal Expert, we offer you a complete list of fruits and vegetables recommended for guinea pigs. Find out below what they are and some recommendations when offering them. In the wild, guinea pigs do not feed on cereals, tubers or fruits. Therefore, we must moderate the consumption of these types of foods and use them occasionally only as a treat. In addition, of all fruits, we should avoid those that are citrus. We can offer pieces of fruit to our guinea pig between two and four times a week. Don't forget to wash them beforehand. Cut them into cubes and remove the stones. The most recommended fruits are apples and pears. In the wild, the guinea pig will feed mainly on fennel, fresh grass and green leafy plants. For this reason, it may be interesting to acquire grass that can be grown for rodents, which will also help keep their teeth healthy and thus prevent dental overgrowth. Vegetables should be offered daily. Don't forget to wash any food well before offering it and cut it into small pieces if it is very large. The most recommended vegetables are broccoli, cabbage and a mix of young shoots. Finally, we would like to review some basic general advice related to feeding the guinea pig. Follow these tips to ensure that their diet is appropriate and that you meet all their nutritional needs. Make sure that your guinea pig always has fresh, clean water available. Pay special attention to water in winter as it could freeze if the environment is very cold. Choose good quality fennel, fresh and dust free. The guinea pig should have unlimited fresh fennel. Commercial pellets contain the necessary vitamin C to prevent nutritional deficiencies. You should administer it following the instructions on the packaging proposed by the manufacturer. The amount of pellets should be more abundant in young, pregnant, old or thin guinea pigs. Check the foods prohibited for guinea pigs to avoid poisoning. Monitor food and water intake as well as the amount of feces it produces. If your guinea pig stops drinking and eating, see a vet immediately. It is a symptom of an illness. Guinea pigs eat their own feces. This is completely normal behavior. If your guinea pig is overweight or thin, readjust its diet. If necessary, see your vet every six, six to 12 months for a general check up. And that's it for today's video. What fruits and vegetables would you add to this list?
