Carlos, a veterinarian, explains the signs and behaviors of female cats in heat and how to manage this stage. He covers the biological aspects of the cycle and discusses spaying as a way to prevent it, plus answers a viewer's question about dog medication schedules.
A cat has to use pads. That's what someone asked me. Hello, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. There are three questions that always go together and that I often get asked and that you also ask me here on the channel. And today I'm going to answer them all. When will my cat go into heat for the first time? How will I know? And do female cats have periods? Cats change their behavior when they reach puberty. I'm sure you've noticed if a stray cat walks by your window from time to time, because when they're in heat, they make a lot of noise. In the specific case that you live with a cat, many of you are worried about when she's going to go into heat for the first time, because you probably have the image of these cats that are so noisy on the street in your head, and that worries you because you don't know how your little one is going to behave. The signs of heat in male and female cats. In male cats and female cats, of course, they can be very different. Today we are going to talk about the signs of heat in female cats because I see that it is something that worries you more. And later on, we will talk about the signs of heat in male cats. The truth is that it is very difficult to predict when your cat is going to have her first heat, because this depends on many factors such as breed size or even daylight hours. Daylight hours? Yes. Daylight hours have a great influence because they have to do with serotonin rhythms. Serotonin is a hormone that is like the calendar and the body's clock all at once. And so it tells the body what season it is and whether or not it is propitious to go into heat. Well, you are already confusing me with your little questions. What I want to tell you is that around six to nine months is when cats usually have their first heat. I have already said heat one times. As you can see, the date is very broad because there are three months between one and the other. So let's move on to the second question. How will you be able to identify that your cat is in heat? Well, the answer is very simple and varied because there will be small behaviors that you will see in your cat that will indicate that this time has come. And now I'm going to give you some examples that I hadn't mentioned. Normally you will see that your cat becomes much more affectionate and wants contact with all members of the family for longer. Oh, don't tell me it's not nice for your cat to climb on top of you and for you to pet her and spend the whole afternoon with her without her grumbling even a little or wanting to get off of you. Well, don't get too excited because there are other behaviors that she will display that may not make you so happy. Many cats become very restless at night, moving all over the house and starting to call frantically to the males that are hanging around the neighborhood. They start meowing in a way that's almost like they're possessed by the devil himself, so this isn't so pretty anymore. Also, in some cases, guided by their hormones, they may exhibit some escapist behaviors and may even suffer from parachute syndrome, which is something very, very serious. If you don't know what it is, I'll leave it here for you to click on and watch the video because it's a bit of a joke. Click here and you'll find out. There are also other times when cats only think about reproducing, guided a bit by their hormones and instincts. And in some cases, they even stop wanting to eat and go several days without taking a single bite. Finally, you can also suspect that your cat is going into heat because you see her licking herself more insistently. Fly, please fly, hero. I don't want any. Because you see that she licks her private areas more often, or because you also notice that her urine smells a bit stronger or that she even urinates outside her litter box. Some people think that only male cats mark, but females can also mark. What you will never, ever, ever see is your cat having her period. Or let's say, menstruation. You may think that female cats are the same as female dogs. There are female dogs that use panties and pads during those days of the month because their family notices that they stain a little. But I can tell you that with female cats, you can forget about the problem of menstruation because they do not stain at all. Cats do not have periods. They so if you see that your cat is bleeding from her vulva, it is something else that requires urgent attention by the vet. And now here is another question. How many days does it last? Well, I have two pieces of news, one good and one bad. So let's start with the good news so I can cheer you up a little. The good news is that this state of heat agitation usually only lasts between two and three days, so it won't last very long. The neighbors won't be bothered much because they're not that close to the cat. But if you have her nearby, you're going to suffer for two or three nights and probably won't sleep much. On the other hand, in order for cats to ovulate, they need to be with a male. Well, I don't know if you've seen cats mating, but that's almost like sadomasochism. Yosh, we can't put that on the channel because they're closing it. Well, if you've never seen it, I'll tell you. In order for a cat to ovulate, she has to mate with a male. And at that moment, the male bites her hard here on the neck, and that's what ends up triggering the production of the egg. If this rough sex session doesn't happen and the cat doesn't bite her neck, then the cat won't produce an egg. And you might say, what a problem. Just let my cat stop meowing and that's it. Well, no, because that's precisely the bad news. When a cat doesn't ovulate, she ends up going into heat again, more or less two or three days after the previous one ended. And that's when you can be reported for public disturbance or fired from your job for poor performance. Because she'll be going into heat non stop every week for about a month. And that means that these behaviors, like being unruly, meowing non stop, being a little affectionate, although that would be the good thing, or marking your entire house with her pee, will easily be repeated for a month. Because we think of a cat in heat as unbearable as a siren bawling all day long. But a cat in heat does that, and even more so, she starts rubbing herself on the floor, meowing as if something is missing inside her. It looks like she's being killed, and believe me, it's not at all pleasant to see or experience. But in any case, as I always tell you, this is not a cookbook. Not all cats have all the signs. And it could be that your cat is experiencing jealousy in a much more subtle way. And it could be that your cat also wants to escape at the slightest change when she's in heat. Let's see. But then where's the good news? Okay, yes, I admit it. I trolled you. The good news is that a cat's heat cycle is very short, only two or three days. But the bad news is that since there won't be a male around to make her go into heat, the whole process has ended up lasting almost a month between one heat cycle and another. And this is enough to make you pull your hair out, throw yourself off the balcony and get your entire neighborhood community to report you. Okay, so we don't have female cats, right? Well, we can have female cats, but we have to find a solution to this behavior. And there are basically two ways you can help your cat. By stopping her heat with medication or by spaying her. If you want me to tell you the truth, I don't like these medicines that stop her heat at all because they have a lot of side effects. And at the end of the day, what you're doing is giving your cat a shot of hormones so she doesn't go into heat. In addition, these medications can have side effects such as increasing the likelihood of your cat getting an infection in the uterus, which is very serious. So what's left is castration. Why does your cat need to go through this ordeal? Well, every so often and you can't do anything to help her. Castration is a definitive solution to these types of problems and it can also prevent others, such as mammary tumors, which are usually quite bad in cats. Well, so since I don't want to go on too long and the video will end up Lasting 20 minutes, I'll leave you here with the video I made about castration and what my opinion was on it. How great that if you're a bit smart by this argument, you can more or less see how I think. And I say to myself, what if cats were allowed to mate freely, for example, and let nature take its course, right? Well, that goes against responsible animal ownership. You can't let your cat say, oh come on, she's in heat, come on. A litter. Do you know how many kittens are born from a litter of cats? About six each time. Imagine that twice a year your cat brings you home six kittens. What are you going to do? You're going to live with 12 new cats every year. And apart from these 12 each year, multiply it. Because when these kittens reach sexual maturity around six or nine months, they're also going to continue reproducing non stop. In the end, what we have to keep in mind is that castration is a measure to help prevent the cat population from getting out of control and to prevent, prevent them from roaming around cities as if they had colonized everything. Because I don't need to tell you that you in your house are not going to be able to live with 36 or 40 or 50 cats. And this number on top of that is multiplying more and more. And you've been able to identify all the signs of your cat's heat. And what I'm most curious about is what solution have you given her? Tell me everything because I want to know what a nosy person you are. You keep quiet because this is scientific information. You have no idea. And that's it for today's video. In the video we recorded with Nika about epilepsy, Bernardo Serrano asks us if he could give his dog the treatment his vet had recommended instead of taking a pill every day, once every two days, and if that would have the same effect. Well, the truth is that when we vets recommend some type of treatment and tell you the schedule in which you have to give your dog the pills, it is precisely because that schedule works and no other. If in the end, you end up choosing to give your dog the pills on the day that suits you, one day yes, one day no, for whatever reasons, and that you want to tell your vet the treatment will most likely not have any effect and it may even be counterproductive. As I always say, you have to listen to the vet and the schedule they have given you because they have studied the case and know how much medication you have to give for it to be effective. Thank you very much for your question, Bernardo. If you want your question to be selected as the question of the week, all you have to do is write us a comment below in our videos and we will select it and end up answering it sometime next week. It's hot. I don't know. Ha.
