Turkish Angora cats are elegant, intelligent, and playful companions with a rich history. They're known for their silky coats, striking eyes, and strong bonds with their owners. Learn about their care needs, health considerations, and why adoption from shelters is encouraged.
Did you know that Turkish Angoras were among the first long haired cats in history? They are one of the oldest feline breeds in the world. Today we are going to get to know them. These cats originated in the Turkish region of Ankara and the truth is that their exact origin is still unknown. What we are sure of is that they appear in documents from the 10th century. These documents explain that these cats were given as gifts to the French and English nobility. But they were especially popular among French aristocrats for many years. So much so that Marie Antoinette of Austria herself had several Turkish Angora cats as pets. Because the Turks gave them as gifts of great value. Because for them they were a symbol of purity. Especially cats with one eye of each color. They valued them so much that they even considered them a national treasure. Despite being an ancient breed, the Cat Fianchers association did not officially recognize it until the 1970s. The International Feline Federation recognized the breed in 1988. And what does the breed standard establishment. When you hear or read the name of the Turkish Angora breed, what's the first thing that comes to mind? A beautiful white cat with long silky hair. Right. And this makes sense because when the breed first began to be bred, only white cats were accepted. However, over time new patterns have emerged and now almost all colors are accepted. So yes, there are also Angora cats that are not white. For example, they can be red, black, cream, blue, silver, or even have a tabby or tricolor pattern. According to the cfa, lilac, chocolate and the dot pattern are not accepted. Another of the most characteristic features of these cats is the color of their eyes. With those large almond shaped eyes, they have a penetrating and very expressive gaze. They are usually amber, copper, blue or green. It is also quite common for them to have one eye of each color. It is clear that Angora cats stand out for their beauty. But what about their personality? These cats are characterized by being calm, peaceful and patient. This doesn't mean we can't play with them as they are also playful and love spending time with their favorite people. They are very affectionate and greatly enjoy receiving long sessions of pampering and caressing. Of course, should keep in mind that there are areas of their body that they prefer us not to touch. Do you want to know them? In the video that we have left for you here above and in the description, we explain where you should and shouldn't pet a cat. In general, they are cats that adapt well to different homes. They are intelligent and they really like contact with humans. With other animals, on the other hand, they can be more territorial and for this reason, it is advisable to socialize them from puppies. On the other hand, their beautiful coat needs to be brushed regularly. Ideally, it should be done several days a week, especially during the shedding season. This is important because they can swallow a lot of hair when they groom themselves. And since their hair is so long, hairballs can form that they will have to expel. These hairballs can become a problem if they do not expel them properly. To avoid this, in addition to brushing your cat, we recommend that you give it molt. How can you give it molt? We'll tell you all about it in the video above and in the description. Remember that we said that Angora cats are very intelligent and playful? Well, if you want to live with one of these cats, you'll have to keep it stimulated both physically and mentally. To achieve this, it's super important that you invest time in enriching your home. What does this mean? You should have several toys, scratching posts of different heights, place shelves for them to climb, etc. We also recommend that you give it a cat fountain. If you already live with a Turkish Angora, you've probably caught it playing with water or trying to drink from the kitchen tap on more than one occasion. In this case, this happens for two reasons. First, mainly because cats love moving water, and second, because this breed seems to show a certain fascination with water and doesn't mind getting wet. Of course, feeding is another key aspect if you care about your cat's health. Cats are strict carnivores and their main source of food should be animal protein. In addition, you should trim their nails if they are not filed properly and maintain good hygiene of their teeth, eyes and ears. But the most important thing you know what it really is dedicating time and a lot of love to them. With all this care, a Turkish Angora cat can live up to 18 years or even more. They are generally quite healthy and strong cats, but it is true that white angoras are prone to developing deafness. Some are even born deaf. And as we always recommend, whether the cat is a purebred or not, you must go to the vet for visits and follow the vaccination and deworming schedule prescribed by the vet. Tell us, do you live with a Turkish Angora or are you thinking about getting one? At Animal Expert, we encourage you to consider adopting them and advise you to ask at the shelters and protectors in your area. Many cats with similar characteristics are waiting to receive a second chance. Until next time, experts m.
