#Haul de supermercado para gatos | ¿Se salva algo? 🛍️😼

This is a YouTube video titled '#Haul de supermercado para gatos | ¿Se salva algo? 🛍️😼' created in April 2019, featuring a detailed discussion by Carlos, a clinical veterinarian, and Jose about various cat products available at the Mercadona supermarket in Spain. The video covers topics such as cat grass, catnip, anti-parasitic collars, cat litter, snacks, and wet and dry cat food, providing veterinary insights and recommendations on their quality and safety for cats. The content is presented in a mostly monologue style with some dialogue between Carlos and Jose, focusing on educating cat owners about supermarket pet products.
Well, well, well. You don't know how Mercadona was. I came loaded with things that you can buy for your cat, although some of them you probably shouldn't. Hello, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. About a month ago, I talked to you about catnip on the channel. The thing is that when I started talking about catnip, many people told me that they bought catnip at the supermarket, that they gave it to their cats. And if that was the same catnip that I was referring to. Jose and I did some hard research. Let's say we went to Mercadona, and while we were there, we realized that there were a lot of cat products that you could buy at the supermarket. So we asked you on Instagram stories if you would be interested in us making a video about the products that you can find in the supermarket for cats. And the response was, well, overwhelming. Everyone wanted us to talk about the products available in the supermarket, although I am aware that there are limitations regarding the areas here in Spain. We went to Mercadona, and I cannot access the supermarkets that you may have in your country or area because obviously they are not the same. So for all of you watching us from Latin America, don't worry, the video will also be useful for you. You just have to get the general idea of the product that I am going to talk about and not just the brand. Well, let's stop messing around and get into the haul of Mercadona products for your cat. Well, or any Supermarke. And let's go to the first product that was the origin of this entire video and about which you have asked me many questions. Of course, it is cat grass, which, as you can see, is sold as an aid to eliminate hairballs. Well, a very lush grass grows out of a pot, which seems like a lie to us, but we've tried it and it's true. A huge amount of grass grows in a very short time. I think we planted it on a Sunday, and by the following Friday, the grass was already close to this height. In other words, it doesn't take long at all for all this grass to sprout and for the cat to eat it. Obviously you shouldn't let the cat eat it when it's just starting to sprout, because then nothing will grow and it won't be of any use to you. But if you leave it at this size, the cats will have a pot for a long time. With this type of Product, you don't need to have a garden. Well, as you can see, it's a very easy kit, very easy that comes in a plastic container. You open the top lid, there's a substrate. You put the seeds on top of the substrate and stir a little where you're planting and water it with half a liter of water. Then. Then you have to make sure that the substrate never dries out completely and that the plant is not in direct sunlight, but rather has light. So in less than five days, you will have the perfect plant for your cat to use. Many of you are very confused when we started talking about catnip on the channel, because as you can see here, they have put cat grass here. But in no case is it the same type of grass nor is it good for the same thing. This one does work for hairballs. And catnip has other types of uses that we explained in the video. You also sent me many questions like this. Is it true that this grass helps prevent hairballs? My cat gets very stressed when I leave the house. Can I give her that? When I was a child, I saw my mother's cat eating grass. A lot of catnip. Is it the same or not? Well, this is not the same as catnip. This type of product is useful for cats so that they ingest a large amount of fiber when they eat it. It helps them eliminate hairballs that can form inside their intestines. It's more or less the same function as when you saw your mother's cat eating a lot of grass. With this pot, they have access to a lot of fresh grass that normally doesn't exist at home. Plus, cats love putting it in front of them and jumping on it. We tested this with Totoro and Kimi, who we put it in front of, and, well, they made a mess of the plant because they got hand to hand and ate half the plant. Plus, it's a natural product that doesn't have additives. And, well, although it doesn't say so here, which I would like it to say, I understand that it doesn't have any type of fertilizer or anything strange that could cause any type of problem for your cat, because if it did, I suppose the plant wouldn't be authorized. As a fundamental drawback. If your cat is very obsessive and leaves it in front of him for a long time and he eats the entire plant, his poop may be a little softer on those days, or he may even vomit because logically, all the fiber he is ingesting with the Plants is not digested and it may make digestion a bit difficult. But anyway, it is another way to eliminate hairballs. It is true. But I am sure that many of you will tell me in the comments that you already give your cat something for hairballs, which is malt. Malt is also sold at Mercadona and the truth is that it is quite easy because you can apply it with a simple applicator that it has. You leave a drop on top of the food or you can leave it on your cat's paw so that it licks it and swallows it. Malt, after all, is extracts of plants, vegetables and other things made in the form of molasses. Therefore you also provide fiber. But in addition to that fiber, it also provides other types of things such as fats and sugars. As for the pros, if you are like me and you are not very good at gardening and having your plants survive more than a month at home is quite a challenge because you always have it on hand, you give the malt to your cat and keep it in a jar and put it on your cat's paw. As for the cons, well, basically you are not only providing it with natural extracts, you are also providing it, as I was saying, with fats and some sugars. That is not as natural as if you were giving it the grass that I showed you before. So do you recommend malt or not? What we are going to do is if you are interested in the subject of mal and what I recommend or not about mal, let me know in the comments and we will make a video on the channel because there is enough to talk about it at length. But it's not that bad, right? No, man, it's not bad. Bad evil. But anyway, I'd like to talk a little more in depth about Mol and I think we'll have another video for that. Well, and regarding the products that help eliminate hairballs in your cat, let's move on to other products that you're also very interested in, which are the anti parasitics sold in supermarkets. I think we've only seen it in Mercadona, but it could be sold in another supermarket. As you can see, what I have here is an anti parasitic collar for cats that tells you that it repels insects, fleas, ticks, lice, mosquitoes, mites and so on. And it's also made 100% with plant based active ingredients and that it has three months of protection. Well, this is really a collar that I'm going to open completely. This is really A collar like a cat anti parasitic collar that you buy at the vet that is made of rubber. Lets see, 2,000 years later we won't have scissors. Right? Okay. As you can see, it's made of rubber. It comes glued like this so it doesn't unroll. But what you have to do is pull here, unstick it and remove this part. You roll this around the cat's neck and pass it through here. It also has notches here that allow you to adjust it so that it doesn't move from the cat's neck or get lost or misplaced, which keeps it quite fixed. Oh, it smells really good. Let's see, let's see. Look, it smells like. It smells great. It smells like strawberries. I don't know, it smells so good that I could eat it.
These types of anti parasitic methods aren't really anti parasitic methods. So you might ask me what are they? Since you can't say that this type of product kills the parasites that your cat may have. Because it's not an insecticide. The commercial name is repellent. Why? Because what it does is that if your cat wears these types of products, insects, fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and others will not come near it because the smell, fragrance and vegetable oils that this product has impregnated are supposed to be sufficiently. How can I say it?
That bugs don't like it. Now that's not a bit of a joke. It is true that there are plants that repel insects, such as citronella, even geranium or basil. These are plants that have volatile substances for which insects feel no love. In fact, quite the opposite, they stay away from them. It is possible that these types of products will prevent insects from coming near your cat. Therefore, if we find any of these bugs that are not bothered by the smell of geranio, when your cat climbs up there, it will create an empire. Why? Because it will not have any kind of impediment to growing and growing and multiplying on top of your cat. Even if it bites your cat, since it doesn't have an insecticide, the product won't kill it. So what are you telling me? If your cat has fleas, ticks, etc. Doesn't it remove them?
No, it doesn't remove them. If your cat already has fleas and ticks on it, some may leave of their own accord because they don't like the smell, but it obviously won't kill them. And as I always say, with this type of product, having live fleas and ticks fall off your cat is almost an inconvenience because they'll stay in your house. When the effect of this collar wears off, they'll get back on your cat. And in the end, you're not going.
To end the problem because that's not a medicine. Right? It's not a medicine. And that's why it's sold in the supermarket, because otherwise it would have to be sold in the pharmacy or the veterinary clinic. What this product basically has is neem extract, Koissel, copper oil, perfume and green dye. That is to say, it does not really have any type of product that will kill fleas or ticks or mosquitoes that may come near your cat. The effect that you should really expect from this collar is that just a little bit of protection, but it will not even come close to having your cat 100% protected. Oh, and another very important thing about collars, as you know, cats can have some problems with collars because they are very fearless. They go around jumping and leaping and can get caught. There are specific collars for cats that can be unhooked if the cat gets caught somewhere. But in this case, this type of collar is very, very rigid, as you can see, and it is very difficult to unhook. Therefore, it can end up being dangerous because they can get caught by the collar and it can even suffocate them. Therefore, this is a product that I personally do not recommend at all. In addition to this insect repellent collar, Mercadona also sells other types of anti parasitic methods, so to speak, because they are repellents such as pipettes or lotions that you can spray on your pet. These types of products are basically based on the same thing as the collar. So they are not strictly anti parasitic methods, but simply repellents. They are products that have adopted an aesthetic that can ultimately confuse you. You can buy pipettes for your cat at the vet's office and you might think that the ones sold at Mercadona are the same, but they are not. Furthermore, if you look at them, they have exactly the same shape as a normal pipette for cats or dogs. But the pipettes sold at the vet or at the pharmacy are, as I always say, medications and are quite effective at eliminating parasites from your cat. And these are simply repellents, as I said, and as protection in themselves, they don't make much sense. Okay, now that we've covered the topic of anti parasitics, let's move on to another topic, which is the litter you put in your cat's litter box. When we were at Mercadona. We saw a lot of litters, both clumping and non clumping, and we also found scented ones in particular. What really caught my attention was the scented litter, because I like that many of you choose it to put in your cat's litter box. It's because you might not like the litter box smelling like your cat's poop or pee, and you prefer it to smell like the scent or perfume of the litter. You should completely avoid these types of products because scented litter is ultimately a product made for the owner, not for the cat. And it may be that the cat doesn't like the perfume you've chosen at all, or that you put it in contact with chemical substances that perfumes have and that could end up being harmful to them in the long term. Because when the cat does its business, it covers its poop and pee and all that dust from the litter can get deposited on its fur and then it, when it grooms itself, can swallow it. Normally, these types of litters hardly exist anymore and we can only find them in the supermarket. And even the scented litters tend to be a little more expensive. It's a product that I personally would avoid, since I realize that the world of litters is very broad and often leaves you a little confused. If you want me to make a video about the different types of litter, let me know in the comments. And now let's probably move on to the part that you're most looking forward to in the whole video, which is the part about feeding. Many of you have written to me in the comments when I talk about food in one of the videos, asking me to recommend a type of food that is sold in supermarkets, that is more accessible to you, etc. The truth is that the food that is usually sold in supermarkets for pets is not usually of very high quality because supermarkets usually work in a low price range to entice you to buy their products. And normally the highest quality feeds are not usually in that price range, but rather tend to cost a little more. That is why they are usually sold in specialized stores and not in supermarkets. Looking around the supermarket, it was quite complicated, if not impossible, to find a type of food that would fit my preferences for feeding your cat, quite the opposite. I found a large number of products that are not very recommendable or healthy for your cat. They have a lot of their products, a lot of additives and substances that are not very desirable in the diet of any living being. Not your cat, not you, not anyone else. For example, let's talk about Snacks. Well, they sell you snacks because they sound like a small meal to whet the appetite, but they are completely healthy. Right? What you might understand by a snack, these are really, well we can call them sweets, snacks for animals. This does not constitute any type of complete food quality. Quite the opposite. If you start reading the composition, it is quite, we could say almost deficient. Each of these little sachets that come inside this box has 4% crude protein, 3% oils and fats. That is, they have almost the same amount of fats and oils as protein. Very low fiber, 0.2%, ash which is the residue or minerals, 2% and moisture which is water, 87%. Okay, what I just read to you is the analytical composition or rather the, the nutrients contained in, in this case the snack that they are selling you at the supermarket. If we look at the composition in terms of ingredients, which is very important for you to know how to read, you have to look at the list of ingredients. At the beginning you will find the ingredients that are most present or that are in the highest proportion. And then you will find in decreasing order the entire list of the different types of ingredients that the food has. Therefore, if the label tells you that the feed is chicken and the first thing you find is cereals, you are being deceived because they are taking advantage of the fact that most people do not know how to read a label properly or that they do not even stop to look at the components of the feed that they are giving their cat. This irresistible and tasty liquid snack for your cat really only has liver and chicken meat and animal products as its first ingredients. No, so far it seems like they're not fooling you. But only 6% of the total is chicken and 6% of the total is Liverpool. They only account for 12% of all the meats they're offering you here. The rest, well, I don't know where the meats and byproducts come from which are neither liver nor Chicken, which is 88%. The next thing we find are their plant based products. They don't really tell you what exactly they have either. And then there's milk and dairy products. In other words, you're really thinking that you're giving them a delicious liver and chicken snack, but in reality the least you're giving them is liver and chicken. But what's more, you're also realizing that it says down here that it's very effective against hairballs. This is one of the main claims that these types of products usually make to get you to buy Them because you think that with these types of products you're going to have the same effect as with malt or the grass that I explained to you earlier. However, only 0.2% is fiber. If you are only giving him 15 grams in each of these bars, 0.2% of 15 is almost negligible. In other words, it is as if you were giving him practically no fiber and therefore it was if you were pouring tap water. In other words, they are really telling you that the irresistible and tasty liquid, I would not give it to my cat. And here we have another wonder, creamy filled treats. In this case, they once again use hairball control because it's something you know you have to do with your cat. Therefore, it's the way to sell you that you can give your cat these treats which are going to be very beneficial for their health because they're going to control their hairballs. However, when you start to investigate a little bit behind the scenes, you realize that in terms of the ingredients, they have, cereals occupy the first place. Therefore, they are the most abundant and 4%, only 4% of the cereals are mul. In other words, the effect that this is going to have on your cat's hairballs is going to be minimal. Honestly, the protein content of these treats is 31%. In this case, it's much higher than in the other because it's a dry food. But the fat content is also very, very high. It's 20% of the fat. That means that out of every 100 grams of this type of product that you are giving your cat, 20 grams will be fat. All the snacks and treats and so on are either of very, very good quality or the ingredients they usually contain are not very beneficial for your cat. These are treats, these are snacks. They are not suitable for feeding a cat. Therefore I do not recommend them at all. Okay, now let's move on to the main topic of food, which are the feeds and foods that you can give your cat on a regular basis? Not just these treats, but something that you can feed your cat every day. The truth is that of the dry foods, very few that I have seen are safe from burning. Most of them when you turn them around are really disastrous. When you come across food for your pets, the additive part that you find on the labels tells you that it is good for your cat, helps their gastrointestinal health and so on. That's all wonderful, but where you're really going to realize whether or not it's a good food and where you're really Going to see if the label is pretty or ugly and is when you turn the bag of feed over, that's when you'll realize if it's really worth buying that one or if you should just skip that option and buy another one of a little bit higher quality. Well, yes, but have you found any feed in Mercadona that convinced you enough to show it to people who would say, well, this isn't so bad? Well, unfortunately not. I haven't been able to buy any dry feed in Mercadona that I can recommend that you give to your cat. I'm sorry, that's life. But have you found anything?
Yes, I've mainly found wet food that has narrowly escaped burning and is an alternative. Imagine that you run out of your bag of feed and you're lost in the middle of the mountain and the only thing you have next to you is a Mercadona. Well, you can buy this food to give to your cat until you can give it a better quality one.
Move it to me.
Okay, I've found two types of wet food. On the one hand, I found cans, and on the other hand, I've found tubs. I'm going to talk to you about the tubs first. The tubs are for adult cats and they very clearly state that they're developed by veterinarians. You're bought by the industry, of course. That's why it has vitamins, minerals, and that it's rich in chicken. When you actually read the ingredients, you'll realize that it has meat, which is good, and its animal products, well, that's not so good. But of that meat and its products, 14% is chicken and 4% is turkey. We can't really say that this food is rich in chicken, to be honest. It has chicken.
It has chicken. And as for the rest of the ingredients, we have minerals and sugars. Don't get dramatic with the sugars. Look, I don't see any need to add sugars to these types of products. And the only reason I can think of for adding sugars here is because it can make it more appealing for your cat to eat. And when you give your cat this product, your cat will rush to eat it like a panther. And when you give it another one, which may be healthier and has no sugars, it might reject it. So you might say, oh, well, the one from Mercadona is better because my cat eats it sooner. The truth is that it's a practice that I don't understand. But I do understand it that way. They sell More. Yes, of course. Of course. We have something better. A little bit better. We have something a little bit better. Yes. And it's canned food again, if you notice. Here you find the calls for you to buy it telling you that it has been designed by a veterinarian in here below. Well, it has minerals. The fact that it says veterinarian here doesn't mean anything. Composition of meat and animal products. But it's made with salmon and trout, and the first ingredient is meat, because it's not made with salmon, it's made with salmon and trout, which is not the same thing. What happens is that when you see it, they put it in a nice blue color and they come and say, oh, look, this one is made with salmon. Not salmon with salmon. Fish and fish byproducts. How much? Well, look, of the total amount of fish and fish byproducts, which is the second ingredient? That is, it's already in very small proportions. Only 4% is trout and only 4% is salmon. They've really taught them this. They've put it in front of the can, the salmon and the trout.
It has salmon flavor and only minerals added to it. This product has no added sugars, which is very beneficial because you're not really giving your cat something that serves no purpose other than to attract their attention between one food and another. I would recommend that you opt for this one, despite everything I'm telling you. Let me be absolutely clear. I do not recommend this as a first choice for feeding your cat. You should never look for food that has quality ingredients. Meat, chicken, or anything like that. That's essential. The purpose of this video is simply so that you know how to read a label, what to look for. And once you know how to read the label, you won't care about the type of brand or anything else it says in front, and you'll just come to your own conclusions about which food is the most beneficial for your pet. And that's it. We're done with the Mercadona lobby.
I think it's clear that Mercadona hasn't paid us for this.
And that's it for today's video. If you liked it, give it a like and share it with everyone. Remember to subscribe to the channel if you haven't already, because if you don't, I'll do something crazy and kill myself with this. No, no, no, no. I need you to continue with the channel and hit the bell so that YouTube will notify you every time we upload new content. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families Channel. And I'll see you in the next video.
We have very nice people who, well, want us to improve on the channel. So they give you recommendations. It didn't help me at all, but I'm giving it a like because it's obvious that you like animals, man. Try to have more technical veterinary content. Greetings from Argentina. Thanks for sparing my life. You can pick up things with just your hands and not like this. So that it seems like there's abundance, but with surprise and joy. Mercadona. Merkadona.
Okay. And one in the bar is in your mouth. You don't want to put it on.
Hello. What do you want? We're talking about cats. It's because I'm going to drop tiles.
But let's see. This is to show the people in the thumbnail that you're doing great. How cool. Well, well, well. You don't know how merkadona was. I come loaded with things for your cat. It doesn't seem like you're enjoying it.
I'll start over. Oh, so maybe I won't even use it for the thumbnail, but, oh, well.
