The content features a discussion primarily between Jose and Maria Jose, along with another speaker, about eco-friendly products and sustainable practices for pet care to reduce environmental impact. They cover topics such as durable pet utensils, biodegradable toys, sustainable litter, and local sourcing of pet food. The video aims to raise awareness and encourage viewers to adopt more environmentally conscious habits for their pets. The tone is informal and educational, with some light humor and personal reflections.
If there's one not so positive thing about living with a dog or a cat, it's that they have an impact on the environment. The good news is that you can help reduce it.
My name is Maria Jose. I like books. I'm taciturn, a vegetarian and an animal lover. Hi, I'm Carlos A, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. Did you know that according to a study, there are more than 160 million dogs and cats in the United States alone? That's a lot of pets living in American homes. Okay, so now imagine the impact of buying them food, toys, feeders and even clothes, which I don't like at all, but some people do. All of this translates into a large amount of pollution that is produced indirectly by living with a dog or a cat. Come on. All living beings have an impact on the environment. But I'm a veterinarian and I'm here to talk to you about our animal companions. The only important thing is that you have to know how to reduce it. Okay? And one thing we were doing right now was editing the video and I realized that I forgot to tell you something very important. All these things that you're going to see in the video are things that I'm doing right now. Changes that I want to implement in my light's life. And let it be known that I don't want to use myself as an example at all. I simply wanted to talk to you about this topic and also make you reflect a little on the fact that all these changes also require a bit of deconstruction on our part. It's normal that at first we can even be a little inconsistent and do some things that mix the old with the new. But the intention is to move towards being more sustainable with the environment. That's why if you know of any other alternatives, I would really appreciate it if you let me know. You can leave them below in the comments. And hey, I don't know, maybe I'll try them with my look and you'll also be able to help the rest of the family or the big family of pets and happy families. Now that I've rambled on enough, lets move on to the video. But don't let this shortcut I'm talking about overwhelm you. These are small actions that you can do in your daily life. And to help you out, I've brought the scout mascots today. For each good deed you do for your animal companions, I'll give you a badge. And at the end of the video we'll see who has the most badges. Well, it's a silly thing to do.
And don't you have a boy Scout bandana?
Well, I have this one, if it works. And now I have the perfect outfit. Lets go from the easiest to the most difficult. We can help a lot with our animal companions. Utensils, feeders and waterers are things that you don't buy every day. That's why it's very important that whatever you buy is always durable. I'm not a big fan of buying them made of plastic. Plus plastic leaves a lot of waste. So it's much better to buy them made of metal or ceramic or in some cases glass. If your cat or dog isn't very stubborn, especially for cats. For example, for Meloo, we have these that are made of stainless steel. As you can see, they have a ring that is made of plastic. It's a rubber, but it's so that the feeder doesn't slide on the floor and doesn't make noise.
I mean, but until now my one was made of plastic.
Yes, until now my loo was made of plastic, but I've changed it. Also. If, for example, you buy some type of brush or comb for your dog or cat, you can choose to buy it made of bamboo or with bristles that aren't plastic. Because all those plastics in the bristles and so on in the end end up being microplastics that end up in the sea and well, they pollute a lot. If you already comply with this, then I'm going to give you the non wasteful badge. Well, I also give it to myself since I also comply with it.
Okay, this was very easy. And after all, we buy it once every very long time. Let's move on to something we tend to buy more often. Toys. When you choose to buy a toy for your dog or cat, you should always look for several things.
That they are resistant, that they are durable, that they are biodegradable, that they are made of natural materials, and that they do not take a long time to decompose. For example, in the case of cats, we can opt for sisal. What is that? Well, sisal is this type of rope that is completely natural. A lot of cat toys are made with it. You can have them in the shape of a ball, in the shape of a mouse, well in millions of shapes. They usually have feathers to attract the cat's attention and thus entertain it for much longer. What are the advantages of this? If your cat ends up destroying them with its paws, claws and so on. It can easily go in the trash and will eventually decompose. It is organic matter, after all, and it will not pollute as much as if they were made of plastic. And for dogs, there are some polymers, some rubbers that are obtained from natural products. They make them with bamboo fibers and so on. And that means that when the dog destroys the toy, the polymer is not as polluting as if it came from petroleum. But if you can't find these types of materials in the stores you have nearby, you can always opt for those that are made from recycled plastics. The toy will end up being made of plastic anyway, but the origin is much more sustainable than if they had taken plastic and made it from scratch. But if you don't want to buy toys for your dog or cat, well, look, you can also choose to make them yourself. I don't make them because I'm not that skilled. These cute ones, for example, are made by my neighbor. And Milou has several little mice of this type that are simply made with normal sewing thread. Knit it and that's it. That way, the ecological impact is also much lower. Make sure that the way you knit it, which I have no idea about, is very tight, that there are no loose threads or anything, so that the cat can't swallow a large thread. And that ends up being a problem in this case, since it's knitted, it's impossible for the cat to pull out a thread and end up eating it. And for me, who has already changed all of my toys to environmentally sustainable toys, I have a badge called Sustainable Toys, and I wear it here on my chest. And if you comply with it, I. I'll also give you another one for yourself. Tin. Okay, but there are times when we have no choice but to use single use materials with our dogs and cats, because they are to contain, for example, the treats that our dogs leave for us in the garden or in the park, or to throw away the things that our cat has left for us in the litter box. The bag we use to pick it up takes millions of years to decompose. We can't be using plastic bags too. We can't. Three, four or five times a day that will end up in the trash and will only have that useful life. If we have to use bags, let's try not to use them made of plastic. Look, I have a bag here for you to see. It looks like plastic, but it's not plastic. It's biodegradable. When it goes in the trash, it will decompose at the same time as all the poop decomposes and in the end it won't leave such a big footprint on the environment. If you don't have these types of biodegradable bags, don't worry. Think of alternatives. For example, what we do with Bilu is that we have a big bucket in the garden where we leave all the remains of her litter box. When the bag is full, we throw it in the bin, but the bag takes a long time to fill up. In other words, we clean the litter box many times before having to throw a single bag in the bin. If you're already using less plastic with your dog and cat, then get a badge, the Clean Oceans badge, because you don't let all this plastic end up floating in the middle of the sea. Okay, and continuing with this whole waste thing, I have to talk to you about something very important. One of the main waste products that cats produce and that has the most impact on the environment is the litter we use in their litter boxes. That litter goes into the trash can about once a month, but the problem is that it can't go into the organic waste bin because it's not biodegradable. That litter is very polluting because it's also often produced by types of mining that aren't very environmentally friendly. The truth is, it's been told, since that's one of the main waste products that our cats produce, if we make a small change in that regard, we're going to have a huge impact. We're going to help the environment a lot. That's why ecological litter was invented. They're not litter, although their name suggests so, but rather they're made from plant products. For example, they are corn fibers from when the corn is harvested. What is left in the field that is collected and pressed to make a type of litter so that cats can do their business in it. And as I told you in another special video about the types of litter, you know, many of them can go down the toilet with that. We are also avoiding the use of single use plastics. So these litters are very convenient for having a cat because they are very eco friendly. And to give you a little bit of insight into all this ecological litter, we were talking to Katie. So they informed us that they were going to release a litter which I have here called Go Natural, which is completely ecological like the ones I told you about, that are made of wood and the bag itself is also made of paper so it can perfectly go into the recycling bin. This is not a sponsored video. They simply wanted us to be able to show this ecological litter by giving us a bag so that we could try it with Bilu to see how it is. Because, hey, in the end, this could be a disaster. This weekend we're going to try it out with Bilu to see how it responds. And we'll see it right here. Let's go now. One really good thing about this litter is that it comes from leftovers and wood from the lumber industry that are mixed with what I told you before, leftover corn crops and other things to produce the entire substrate. It's obtained through a cold pressing process. It doesn't have any type of glue or chemical product that could affect the cat.
And after testing it for a few days, the truth is that the litter works very well. My Lou really liked it and when she did her business and we had to clean the litter box, we realized that it practically doesn't smell at all. And some balls formed that weren't too big either. Therefore, we didn't throw away a huge amount of unused litter, but only the one that was around the things my Lu did. Very good impression, really. So if you want to try it too, I'll leave a link below so you can check it out. And if you want to buy a bag, go ahead. We don't charge anything for you to click on the link. Okay, let's be clear. Katie offered us this product to talk about in a video. And since we found it interesting, there you have it. If you already had biodegradable litter in your litter box, you already have your badge. Happy pooper. Here you go. Okay. And since I started the video, I've been hearing your voice saying to me, what about the food? What about the food? Well, she left it for the end with the whole bill. Food being organic doesn't necessarily have to be a positive thing. Let me tell you why. Food that is organic for our animal companions or for us means that in its manufacturing or production process, there are no industrial chemicals, no pesticides, nothing that could have an impact on the environment. But there are times when farms are less productive, so more land is needed to produce the same amount of food or more water to produce the same amount of food. So the impact may occur in a different way. For me, it is not so important that the bag of your dog or cat food says that it is organic. However, it could be interesting for you to buy from local suppliers or to find out if there is a company, industry or factory near you that manufactures animal feed or food for animals. For those who do not understand the subject of feed, ask them or buy directly from there, because in this way, we will save a lot on our carbon footprint. In other words, a ship does not have to come from mainland China with all that that entails in fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions. To leave a bag of your dog or cat food at your supermarket so that you can buy it there and take it home. And if you already had this awareness of local trade, well, you already have your badge. What was it? Okay, sustainable food here for you. Boom. Well, and you've already seen that there are only four or five very small things that anyone can do at home. So if this video has helped you become aware and start having a more sustainable attitude towards your dogs and cats, what you have to do is start complying from today. In order to earn all the badges and be the envy of your entire neighborhood, you wear these badges here like medals of honor and say, look, my cat doesn't throw things in the trash. Well, my cat never throws them away. I throw them away. And that's it for today's video. If you liked it, give it a like and share it with everyone. We're leaving quickly because the power is going out. We have a giant storm cloud overhead. Remember to subscribe to our channel if you haven't already and hit the bell. So YouTube will notify you every time we upload new content. Content. Also remember that here on YouTube we have a secondary channel called Questions and Answers from a veterinarian. Go check it out and subscribe too. And today we meet Perla and Flocky, who aren't making fun of us. A just have their tongues stuck out a bit. And they live with yellow pee. And Sanji is Kurumi and not as little cat like companion. And Tiger watches us very attentively from Peru. He lives with Adelied Almeida. Thank you very much for following the Happy Pets and Families channel. And I'll see you in the next video. I hope it's sunny and these aren't dark circles. It's the reflector that Jose put on them. Jose, take it off so you can't see my dark circles.
You look the same.
It's because I also have my computer screen here. Look.
That's right.
It was my computer screen.
Oh, well, we've already recorded the video. I'm so sorry. Yeah, okay. Your animal companion is to blame for the hole in the ozone layer. Because you told me to be. The good news is that you can help. The good news is that it cleans up really well. Really well. And well, God forbid. I mean. Okay. Oh, I had something to say here. I was going to say something and it slipped my mind. I need water.
Yeah, give me some water and I'll give it to you. When you put these measures into practice, I'm not going to say a greeting, but this is like El Sajo. Hey, how can I baptize myself with a name like. Well, Jose isn't up for it?
