The Maine Coon is probably one of the most popular giant cats in the world. But apart from its size, it also stands out for being a cat with a very strong personality and for the great bond it creates with its owners. Do you want to know more about this giant and affectionate cat? Don't miss this new video from an animal expert. The Maine Coon is a breed endemic to the United States, specifically to the state of Maine. It is estimated that around 1850 long haired cats arrived from Europe and Asia which were mated with local short haired cats resulting in large long haired cats with a strong build. Its ring tail resembled that of a raccoon. For this reason it is known as the Coon, short for rachoon, which means raccoon in English. This breed was popular among rural people and was widely distributed on farms in northeastern America. They were imported from the United Kingdom in 1980 and in 1982 they were recognized by Fife. Later, in 1993 they were recognized by the GCCF. It is currently considered a popular companion animal all over the world. If you want to know everything about this spectacular feline, it will be essential to review the breed standard in general, which will help us to really understand what it is like. Physically, it is a giant sized cat with a square head, large ears and a long tail. Its body structure is robust thanks to solid bones and strong muscles. Males usually have a very muscular and strong neck, but in general, females and males share large legs and a very long tail as long as the entire body of the feline. We also highlight the ears which are very characteristic due to their pointed appearance and the tufts similar to those of a lynx. Finally, we highlight the large and wide eyes of any color, or the coat which must be dense on the back in the castrated and belly, but shorter on the head, shoulders and legs. It has a silky texture and also has undercoat, a dense and thick base that protects it well against the cold. We can define the character of the Maine Coon as friendly, playful and sweet. In general, this is a very sociable cat that enjoys the company of its owners. However, in order for the feline to be balanced and sociable in its adult stage, special attention must be paid to the socialization of the cat in its kittenhood, which begins at three weeks of age and ends around seven weeks of age. Until then, the kitten must remain with its mother and siblings, which will allow it to learn feline language, play patterns and bite inhibition. At this stage, it must also meet people and other animals to avoid possible fears. In its adult stage, these are also cats that will love to play and have fun at all stages of their lives, including during old age. They are also considered highly intelligent felines capable of recognizing a wide variety of words and commands. One peculiarity is their vocalization. The Mane is a cat famous for its frequent howls, warbles and chatter. They are also fond of water and snow. Owning a Maine Coon is recommended for dynamic families familiar with cats, which may or may not include children. This is a very adaptable feline that will enjoy a variety of environments, but especially in rural homes where it can explore and express its instinctive behavior without limits. It is a particularly docile and well socialized cat. It does not usually have behavioral problems. Caring for a Maine Coon cat is relatively simple, although it can be somewhat expensive, mainly due to its large size. We are referring specifically to its diet which should be based on high quality products. Whether we opt for dry food, homemade recipes or raw diets, choosing a good product will have an impact on its health, well being and a radiant coat. Due to its propensity for obesity, it is recommended to properly ration its food into two or three meals a day. Although like all cats, the Maine Coon usually spends long hours grooming itself. Due to its long coat, it is advisable to spend a few hours a week brushing it. This routine will help us keep their coat clean and beautiful, but it will also help us detect any skin problems, pain or the presence of parasites. We can use a carding brush to comb their fur and if we notice any knots, we should first use a small knot cutter specifically for felines. In principle, we should not bathe them since cats clean themselves. However, if we have accustomed them since they were puppies, we can also start a monthly bathing routine using shampoo and conditioner specifically for cats, which will help us keep their coat impeccable. In order for them to be able to express the natural behaviors typical of their species, we must provide them with a large litter box in which they can relieve themselves and cover their excrement, as well as several different types of scratching posts where they can sharpen their nails and perform typical marking behavior. Finally, it is also very important to pay attention to the feline's environmental enrichment through feline structures, walkways, catnip, water sources or canvas tunnels. Due to their playful nature, they must spend hours playing with their owner where we can use fishing rod type toys, food dispensing toys, catnip or simple toys. Don't forget that a good play session should last between 20 and 40 minutes a day. Don't forget to visit our channel if you want to know how to make toys for your cats. It is advisable to visit the vet every six to 12 months for a general exam and to detect possible health problems. In addition, the professional will guide us to properly follow the cat's vaccination schedule as well as the internal and external deworming that we must carry out regularly. Preventive medicine is essential to ensure the good health of the feline. Likewise, we must be regularly attentive to their behavior, their bowel movements or the possible expulsion of hairballs that can be prevented with the use of cat molt. The most common diseases of the Manon are feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hip dysplasia and pectus excavatum. With proper care and the preventive medicine guidelines mentioned above, the life expectancy of the Maine coon is around nine to 15 years. And that's it for today's video.
