The video aims to educate cat owners on symptoms and treatments, encouraging veterinary consultation.
Have you noticed that your cat is making strange noises in its throat? In this video by an animal expert, we explain the five possible pathologies that it may be suffering from. 1. Feline Trinotracheitis is a disease caused by Feline Herpesvirus type 1, a virus with DNA as its genetic material that has the ability to reproduce latency in the cells of infected and can reactivate under certain conditions such as stress or immunosuppression. Although it is a virus that mainly affects the eyes and nose of the cat, it can also affect the lower respiratory tract such as the larynx and lungs. In the most severe cases it can cause pneumonia with biuremia and sudden death, especially in newborn or very young kittens. Treatment should be based on the use of antiviral drugs if necessary and and antibiotics to prevent secondary infections. 2. Laryngitis the larynx is the cat's vocal organ that is the one that allows them to moan. It is located at the entrance to the trachea and prevents food from entering the airway. This structure can become inflamed, which is known as laryngitis, either due to infections or irritations, among other reasons. The first signs of laryngitis in cats are changes in the tone of their meows, becoming more hoarse or dry, dry or irritating cough, swelling or sore throat and strange noises with it. Laryngitis usually resolves itself. If it is due to infection, the most effective specific medication should be prescribed. 3. Laryngeal paralysis this can occur hereditarily in cats of certain breeds, such as Himalayans, exotics or Persians because they are brachycephalic. In these cases it is usually diagnosed a few months after birth, while in other breeds it usually appears when they are older. Its clinical signs are inability to meow, partial blockage of the upper airways that induce loud sounds or squeaks, and breathing with the mouth open. Causes range from trauma to the recurrent laryngeal nerve during thyroid surgery, damage from collars, bites and lymphosarcomas in the neck, among others. Treatment in these cases must be surgical, restoring normality to the larynx. Find out how to tell if your cat is sick in the video that we have included in the card. 4. Pleural effusion this consists of the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pleural space due to a disorder in the elimination or production of fluid. This affects the correct expansion of the lungs during breathing by limiting their movement. Causes vary from kidney or heart disease to feline infectious peritonitis tumors, penetration of foreign bodies, diaphragmatic hernia, chest trauma or bacterial infections. Clinical signs include respiratory distress that can be confused with strange sounds from the throat, increased respiratory rate and coughing. Regarding treatment, the effusion will have to be controlled with oxygen therapy and puncture of the pleural space to extract the accumulated fluid. Diuretics can also be used to treat the cause of the discharge in question. Five Nasopharyngeal masses. Your cat making strange noises in its throat may also be due to a mass in the nasopharynx, either a tumor or an inflammatory polyp. These masses form from the tissue of the nasopharyngeal mucosa. The cause is unknown, although in young cats it is suspected that it has a congenital origin. In addition to strange sounds in the throat, cats present signs such as inspiratory dyspnea, wheezing and, if the ear is also affected, signs such as head shaking and scratching at the ear. Discover other reasons why your cat scratches its ear excessively in the video that we have included in the card. The treatment will depend on the location of the polyp, but it is always surgical by endoscopy. In exclusive nasopharyngeal masses after surgery, the the use of corticosteroids is usually necessary. As you can see, all the causes that can cause a cat to make strange noises with its mouth or throat need to be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian. That's why we should go to the clinic as soon as possible. If you want to learn more about diseases in cats and veterinary advice, don't miss the playlist that we have left for you here.
