Carlos, a clinical veterinarian, walks through how to move house with a cat without stressing them out. He covers planning the move, setting up a safe room, transporting your cat, and helping them settle into the new home.
If you're moving house, in addition to thinking about the truck, moving the furniture, and your entire family, you also have to think about your cat. Hi, I'm Carlos, a clinical veterinarian at Small Animals. Welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. Cats can suffer a lot from stress, and I can't think of anything more stressful than moving house. And since many of you have asked me to give you some tips on how to survive a move with your cat, today I'm going to give you a series of tips that will come in handy in case you have to move house and take your cat with you, which, of course, I hope you do. The first thing is to plan ahead. In other words, you already know the day you're going to move. Your cat probably doesn't. But since you do, what you have to do is think about how you're going to do it. Choose a room in your house that is as far away as possible from all the hustle and bustle that will be in your home on moving day. This room will be your cat's refuge, the place where your cat will be on moving day. And to help your cat get used to it, what I recommend you do is start putting things that your cat uses in that room, such as its food bowl, its water bowl, or its resting area, its bed. You can also spend a little more time in that room the days before the move, playing with your cat. That way your cat will get used to being in that room and the day you have to keep it locked up in there because obviously you will have to close the door, it will not find it so strange. Don't even think about putting it in the litter box on the first day, because cats are very jealous of where their litter box is and will always look for it in the same place. So what I recommend you do is start putting the food bowl and toys in, and you're also moving. You have what a cat likes the most within reach. What is it? Well, it's not food or toys or anything like that. It's boxes. With the boxes that you're going to use to put things in when you move, you can make a maze for your cat, or even if you're a bit handy, you can make toys for him. How do you make a cat toy out of a box? You can make slots so he can put his paws in, or if you have a flat box, you can put a ball inside and make some holes so he can play with the ball without having to take it out. And you might say, well, since I'M getting ready for the move. I'm going to empty that room where I'm going to put the cat so that I don't have to empty it when the cat is in there. Well, mistake. You have to leave that room as similar as possible to how you normally have it in your house. That way your cat won't be so aware that something is happening or about to happen. If you want, you can pick up whatever's inside the cabinets or the small things you have lying around, but basically you shouldn't have to change it. If it's a room and you have a bed, don't take it apart or the cabinet. Otherwise your cat will start to notice that something strange is happening and that can stress him out. Cats think that your entire house is theirs, so having someone come and dismantle their empire doesn't sit well with them. By the time the moving truck comes, you'll have followed all these steps because you're a smart guy or girl and you listen to me and well, you'll have moved all your cat's things into that room. That last day, or the second to last day is the day you have to put their litter box in so that once they've gone into that room and explored it to go eat or play, they suddenly find their litter box well separated from the food bowl. That way it won't be such a shock to him. On moving day, it's very important to let everyone know that your cat is in that room and that the door cannot be opened under any circumstances. If necessary, you can leave a note on the door clearly stating not to open it because with all the stress and hustle and bustle in your house, you, your cat, may feel very unprotected and may try to run away when the door is opened. And once you've dismantled all the furniture in your house, it's time to empty the room where your cat is. What do you have to do to do this? Put your cat in the carrier so that it can't escape before you start dismantling the furniture. Of course, if you are moving to a house with new furniture and you are not taking anything with you, or you have to assemble some new furniture such as the kitchen, it is advisable that all of this is already done by the time you move into your new home so that when you arrive with your cat after these stressful days of moving things around in your old house with the transport and everything, your cat does not have to put up with knocks, noises, assembling furniture, etcetera if, on the other hand, you are taking all the furniture and you have to assemble it in your new home, I recommend that the furniture in the room where your cat has been locked up in your old house be the first to be assembled in your new home. That you have also selected a room exclusively for this purpose, and that this will be your cat's new refuge in your new home while the rest of the rooms are assembled. And finally, the big day has arrived, which is moving day. But of course, here you may encounter another problem which is transporting your cat from your old house to your new one. We have already talked about this on the channel and if you want to watch the video where I teach you how to transport your cat safely in a car, I will leave the link here. Check it out after watching this video. The thing is that in order to transport your cat, you must take a series of precautions that are a little more intense if you are going to make an international trip. If you are going to move between two countries with your cat, you have to know exactly what they are going to ask of you at the border so that your cat can cross it. If your cat does not meet all the requirements that they ask of you at the border, it will not be able to cross. And that can lead to a very difficult situation because there are some cats that have to stay at the border in the quarantine zone and that is obviously not pleasant for anyone. Health documents are something that the police ask you for at the border. It is not something that the vet asks you for when you arrive, although you should check the website or the consulate of the country you are going to and find out what requirements they will demand to enter through the border. The most important thing, and this is basic, is that your cat has a microchip, your cat has a passport and has its vaccinations up to date. In some cases, it is necessary to obtain a certificate from the vet stating that your cat does not have any type of disease. But as I say, the requirements are very changeable and it is necessary to inform yourself very, very well before planning the trip. In any case, whether you have traveled by car, train, balloon, hot air balloon or elephant, or you are moving to the next street, you have already arrived at your new home. What are the steps you have to follow at this point? The first and most important thing is that the house is already set up as much as possible, or almost all the furniture is already in its final place. But hey, if that hasn't happened yet, you have to find your cat a new shelter, which will be a room exactly the same as in your old house, with the door always closed during the entire time the new house is being set up. In that room, you're going to arrange all of his things, the things he needs to live, which are his food and water bowls, his rest area and his litter box. You're going to arrive with a carrier and you're going to put it there and you're going to open the door. Please don't forcibly take your cat out of the carrier. Let him go out and explore his new enclosure little by little. Remember that the door to that room will always have to be closed. And if you have to put a note so that everyone knows that the door can't be opened, you'll have to do so. The important thing is that people are aware that there's a cat in there. If you have that door and nobody knows that it can't be opened, some funny person. Not funny, no. Someone who doesn't know can come and open the door and the cat can take off like a flash. And as you know perfectly well how, you have to win your cat's love, which is with food most of the time. If you want, once you've arrived at your new home, in the cat's feeder that you have inside that room, you can put a little wet food so that your cat gets a little motivated and wants to go out and explore. Some treats. Uh, treats. Only if they're healthy. If they're from the supermarket. No, please. Also, if you can entertain yourself for a moment to give your cat a little play, or if there's someone in the family who can stay inside for a while with the cat so that it gains confidence. That would be perfect, because that way it won't miss the new location so much. Once all the hustle and bustle of people assembling furniture in your house, all the moving of boxes and things has passed, you can relax in your new home. But you have to remember that your house is not yet catified. Catifying an environment is what any of us who live with a cat do in our daily lives. Making our home, which is ultimately your cat's home, the more pleasant it is for them, the better. It is very likely that the window shutters or nets are not yet installed in your new home. It is possible that if you forget and leave a window open, your cat could be in a dangerous situation and could even fall out of the window because it wants to go and explore. Think twice before opening the window and consider whether it is safe for your cat. In addition, synthetic feline facial pheromones play a special role in all this cat ification of environments, which I will never tire of telling you about. This is something that can help you a lot so that your cat doesn't feel strange in your new home, and so that he notices that the environment is pleasant for a cat at this point, and taking into account the risk that the windows that I just mentioned can pose, you can open the door for your cat so that he can explore little by little. Regarding the litter box, which is always quite a delicate thing, what I recommend that you do is buy a new litter box and put his old litter box, the one he is used to using, in the location in the house where you want the litter box to end up and leave the other litter box inside the room where he keeps all his things. This way your cat won't have to go exploring your house to go to the bathroom. Imagine that the poor thing has a hard time if he has to go through all the rooms to find his bathroom. He may feel a little frustrated. By the way, if you have a life that paralyzes you to place your cat in life right, your cat is a part of your life and is the most important thing right now. Also, just because you open the door for your cat to explore your new home doesn't mean that he's going to go out and explore right away. Remember how your cat behaves after leaving the vet. Most cats hide under a bed inside a closet and don't want to come out for several hours because they've had a very stressful situation in their lives and need to compose themselves. In this case, if your cat is hiding under a bed inside a closet, inside a suitcase, don't let him out. Let him. When he wants to explore and feels more secure, he'll come out. Also, don't skimp on games and petting your cat during those first few days because that will make him feel much more comforted from all that terrible, terrible stress that he's just endured. And now you're going to ask me, well, what am I going to do with two litter boxes in my house? Because you just recommended that I put two trays. When you see that your cat starts using its old litter box, remembering that you put it in its final place in your new home, that means that your cat is adapting, normality is coming to your home. Then you can remove the new litter box that you put in the room where all its things were, and then you can remove it from your home because it is no longer of any use to you. But how long does it usually take to adapt? It depends on the shyness and a bit on the personality. Because it is a cat, the catnip of your cat, there are some kittens that are a bit more shy and that for two or three days realize that this house is not theirs and that during that period they want to spend more time in the room where they have all their things, because they feel much safer there. That is why it is useful to have a room as a refuge for your cat. With a food bowl, a toy, a bed and so on. With the food bowl, don't worry, because cats are gluttons by nature. So as soon as you move it outside, wherever you take it, your cat will adapt perfectly. As for toys, well, you can play with your cat all over your house, as I suppose you normally do, and you won't have any problems. And its bed? Well, put it where it has set up its resting area. If it prefers to rest in that room, perfect. If you see that it spends more time in front of the window watching cars go by, well put it there. No problem. The the window should be closed. Or with a mosquito net. Or a net, of course. Well, and that was all the advice I had to give you. I don't know if it was too little or too much. Well, let me know in the comments, but be careful. If you start to notice that your cat is behaving strangely in the days following the move or during the move, it could be an indication that they are suffering from a lot of stress and that some type of stress related illness may begin to appear, such as problems with their urine, that they start to pee outside the litter box or in the shower stall, for example, and that their pee may have a reddish color or that your cat may stop eating. This can also be a very dangerous situation that deserves to be seen by a veterinarian. Obviously your cat will be stressed. In any case, what we are trying to do with these steps is to minimize it as much as possible. But I am sure that you will succeed, so do not worry. The last thing is that if your cat is still prone to stress related illnesses, you can consider leaving him with a family member or friend for the entire duration of the movement, or even in a cat friendly residence or hotel where he will be much calmer and won't experience all those stressful episodes of moving boxes and furniture.
