Foreign hello, and welcome to the Happy Pets and Families Channel. I'm Carlos. I'm a clinical veterinarian in small animals. And today we've come to Cynthia and Totoro's house to tell you about Totoro's battle against obesity. One day, Scenia began to notice that Totoro was a little less agile. Well, right now he's very agile. And that he had perhaps gained a little weight. Obesity in cats is quite a serious problem. Around 40% of cats can suffer from it. Furthermore, this obesity can make the cat less healthy because it can affect their joints and cause diabetes. If the animal is eating poorly, in short, it is shortening their quality of life. Now, Cynthia is convinced that Totoro needs to lose weight, and we have begun her battle against the scale. But first of all, how can you tell if your cat is overweight? It's clear that animals can be a little bigger or a little smaller. So many times, you can't really see if they have more or less of a belly. The most important thing is to look and feel it. You should see if their waist is noticeable if you see them from above, and see if their belly isn't hanging too much. And by touching, you should apply light pressure to the animal's chest and feel the ribs slightly. You can also touch the upper part of the back and feel a little bit of what the vertebrae are. This has to be very subtle. You don't have to notice it too much, because if you notice it too much, it means that the animal is very thin. And if you don't notice anything, it means that the animal is obese. If you've noticed that your feline companion is a few extra pounds, you should start changing things. And I'm going to show you how Senshu started doing it. Cynthia started weighing Totoro's food to be able to adjust the amount based on his weight. She also started writing down in a notebook the amount of food she gave him each day to see if he gained or lost weight based on the amount he ate each day. Don't leave the cat's food out all day. Cynthia started taking Totoro's food away and only giving him two or three meals a day with the corresponding dose. When Totoro goes to the food bowl, the he only eats the amount he's supposed to eat, and we prevent him from going back and forth all day and eating in an uncontrolled manner. Try to slow down the speed at which he eats. We're now taking this step with Totoro if a cat eats too fast, he'll get full later, and that way he'll gain weight. If you try playing with food, dispensing toys with him, when he catches it, the toy releases some food. He eats little by little, and the cat gets full sooner. Make all the members of the family aware. In Totoro's case, he only lives with Cynthia. But if your cat lives with other people, everyone has to be aware that the cat is losing weight. If your cat develops the behavior of asking for food, simply don't give it to him. This morning, while we were having breakfast, Totoro asked us for food. Instead of giving him some, we played with him for a while. This way, Totoro forgot that he wanted to eat our breakfast, and instead we gave him a moment of physical and fun activity. Another way we are helping Totoro lose weight is by increasing his exercise. A cat should play all its life because that way it is hunting and getting stimulated every day. If you make your cat hunt more often and play with you more, you are increasing your cat's physical exercise. And in this way, you will be fighting his obesity. Totoro really likes his toys, but the one he likes to play with the most is his sister, Kimi. The one you just saw is Kimi, Totoro's playmate, who came to his house to stop him from feeling so lonely and who was also helping him lose weight. Kimmy arrived at Cynthia's house after Totoro, and now the three of them live together. They play chase and hunt a lot. Because Kimmy is also a little more agile than Totoro and is a little thinner. But this is an advantage for Totoro. She is more active and helps him to be even more active. But I'm not saying that you need to have another cat in your house. Totoro is very lucky, but you can play with your cat and help him to be more active in this way. Playing is wonderful for cats because it strengthens your bond and increases their physical activity. But just like when people start going to the gym, you have to start exercising very little by little and gradually increase the time. If you see that your feline companion is very overweight, as happened to Totoro at the beginning, you can start playing with him for three or four minutes at a time. This will prevent him from hurting his joints due to being overweight, and you will gradually introduce this routine into his life. We're talking about games and toys for cats, but what are the characteristics that a toy for a cat should have Cats love to play with toys that hang. The string has to be quite strong so that it can't be broken and it has to be thick to prevent it from swallowing it. Sometimes cats come to the consultation with strings that are very thin and that can cause some kind of problem. They have to be able to have fast and unpredictable movements, such as toys hanging from a string. Feathers are very beneficial for cats because they catch them in the air while flying and keep them quite curious and active for a long time. This is Totoro's favorite toy. As you can see, it is a toy about the size of a prey that makes noise when it moves. It also has a part with more colors to stimulate it visually. Don't underestimate the power of a simple laser pointer. Cats love to chase the light of a laser pointer, although you have to use it with a little caution because you shouldn't point it at the cat's eye and you should also compliment it with a smaller toy like a prey, or give it a little bit of food from time to time so that the cat does not get frustrated because obviously the laser pointer does not catch it and does not have the reward of having caught it. As you can see, there are many alternatives that you can have to fight your cat's obesity. If you get involved like Acho Sentia with Totoro, you can help him to have a much better quality of life and to live many healthy years with you. Although the fight against the scale is not easy and Totoro still has a long way to go, he has begun his battle against being overweight, which will surely be a success because Cynthia is very involved and is doing everything right so that Totoro loses weight. We will keep an eye on him and will be very attentive as he loses gram gram towards his ideal weight. And that's it for today's video. If you are also fighting feline obesity, let us know in the comments what you are doing to help your cats lose weight. If you liked the video, please give it a like and share it with your family and friends because that way we can help them keep their cats at their ideal weight. Many thanks to Totoro, Cynthia and Kimmy for letting us into their home to tell you their story. And thanks to all of you for following the Happy Pets and Families Channel. See you in the next video. Don't worry, I'll control it better than I do. I don't want to go to the gentleman because this way and this way, if your cat develops the. Let's see what the cat does. You can increase it in a dog right now, no.
