This is a YouTube video titled "¿Para qué sirven los BIGOTES de los PERROS?" created on June 7, 2019, providing an informative explanation about the function and importance of dogs' whiskers (vibrissae). The content is a monologue or narrated explanation from an animal expert discussing how whiskers help dogs sense their environment, protect their eyes, and gauge space. There is a single speaker delivering educational content without any conversational interaction.
All dogs have whiskers, which can be longer or shorter. They grow out of the muzzle and have a stiffer, firmer texture than the coat. Some people trim them for aesthetic reasons, but it is not recommended to do so because they serve important functions. Do you want to know what a dog's whiskers are for? We'll explain in this video from Animal Expert. What are whiskers? Whiskers are actually called vibrissae or tactile hairs, as they act as a sixth sense for dogs. They are tactile receptors with a vascularized root and multiple nerve endings that communicate a series of data to the brain. The vibrissae, which give the dog the appearance of having whiskers, are the most common. However, they are located at different points on the body. We also find vibrissae on the chin, wheel, jaw, lip area, above the eyes and on the cheeks. What are they for? Vibrissae serve important functions. That is why it is not recommended to trim them. Both the whiskers and the tactile hairs located in other parts of the face help the dog to gauge distances in the dark. Air currents perceived by the vibrissae allow the animal to get an idea of the size of the space and the location of objects. On the other hand, the supraciliary vibrissae, which are those located just above the eyes, help protect them from possible objects or foreign bodies. In the event of approaching some type of danger, these hairs detect it and prompt the dog to close its eyes. Finally, the vibrissae provide the dog with information about the temperature. An interesting fact is that these hairs are proportional to the size of the dog, so they allow it to know if a space is large enough for them to pass through. Dogs whiskers grow back in the same way that they shed their hair, dogs shed their vibrissae. So if you have noticed that any of these hairs have fallen out, don't worry, they will grow back quickly. Similarly, if you have accidentally cut one, it will also grow back. Of course, even if the whiskers grow back, it is important to note that they should not be cut since without them the animal will be defenseless, lacking this tactile mechanism that helps it orient itself and perceive the world.
