Would you like to adopt one of these two breeds but don't know which one would best suit your lifestyle? In this animal expert video, we explain the similarities and differences between the German shepherd and the Doberman so that you can learn more about these breeds and make up your mind. Let's get started. To better understand the differences between these two breeds, we must first understand their origins, starting with the German Shepherd. This is a German breed that originated in the 19th century as a working dog. It was originally used for herding sheep. Today, it is known for its ability to perform other tasks such as assistance, security, police and even military work. The Doberman, on the other hand, is another of the best known dogs of German origin. Its origins also date back to the 19th century, but it is not a shepherd breed, but rather designed for guarding a task that it continues to perform today. Regarding their physical characteristics, German Shepherds are large animals with a weight that can exceed 40 kg and a height at the withers that exceeds 60 cm. They are more robustly built than Dobermans and their bodies are slightly elongated. They can be found with long or short hair and in different colors such as black, cream or sable. Their coat also stands out for being double layered. The inner layer is ring like, while the outer layer is dense, hard and close to the body. The Doberman is also large in size, very similar to the German Shepherd. It is somewhat less heavy with specimens weighing between 30 and 40 kg and somewhat taller, with a height at the withers that almost reaches 70 cm. Therefore, it has a more athletic and muscular body build. In general, its appearance is slimmer than that of the German shepherd, which tends to be more robust. Their coat is short, dense and hard and they have no undercoat, which is why they can't withstand temperature changes as well as the German Shepherd. As for colors, although the best known Dobermans are black and tan, they can also be brown and red in different shades of brown. On the other hand, it should be noted that in some territories this breed is included in the list of dog breeds considered potentially dangerous. For this reason, you must meet a series of requirements to own them. Regarding their character, both are intelligent, loyal and protective animals with their family. Both can live with the little ones in the house without problems as long as they have been well socialized and educated. They are also excellent at learning and good guardians. Due to their great intelligence and abilities, it is essential to offer them a good education, socialization and stimulation, both physically and psychologically. If you want to know which dog breeds are the easiest to train, don't miss the video that we have left for you here above in the card. The care that these two breeds need is somewhat different. German shepherds will need more frequent brushing, especially if you have a long haired one. They also require much more physical exercise than Dobermans. A couple of walks a day won't be enough. You'll need to offer them the chance to run, jump, play or go on long walks. Finally, they both have in common that they need good mental stimulation to avoid stress and boredom. Unlike German shepherds, Dobermans will only need to be brushed occasionally as their short coat is easier to maintain. They'll also need plenty of physical exercise, although perhaps not as much as German shepherds. Finally, and like the previous one, it's important to stimulate them mentally to avoid behavioral problems regarding their health. It's true that both breeds can suffer from problems due to their large size, such as stomach torsion or joint problems. However, they do have differences in terms of diseases to which they are prone. For example, hip dysplasia is very common in German shepherds. In addition, due to its indiscriminate breeding, it suffers from eye and gastrointestinal disorders, among others. This has also caused behavioral problems in some specimens such as nervousness, excessive fear, shyness or aggressiveness. If it has not been properly educated or socialized, its life expectancy is between 12 and 13 years. On the other hand, pathologies that affect the heart are more common in the Doberman. Likewise, like the previous one, an excessively nervous character can also be detected. Finally, its life expectancy is very similar to that of the German shepherd since it is around 12 years.
